The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We enjoyed the sun for lots of the day yesterday, a bit of a wind in the afternoon and cloudier conditions later on with then rain during the night. Quite heavy at times too. It is not raining this morning but cloud remains over the area and it is very noticeably not as warm as it has been over the last week or so. We are forecast to get to see the sun again today but it doesn't look like it will get as hot with the local forecast predicting a high of about 20 degrees. Tomorrow it's sun all the way and more like mid-20s so that should be good weather for the last day of the season at GALA Yuzawa, Naeba and Tashiro areas. Naeba were hoping to be able to keep the Daishamen course open, but have had to close it due to the lack of snow up there. Snow melt has been fast over the last week or so... From Thursday onwards only Kagura (via Mitsumata Ropeway) will remain open and they plan to continue on until the end of May. We'll be posting our last daily update of the season tomorrow, and then reports at least once a week until Kagura closes. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: Official snow depth of 110cm. Most of the Central Area and part of the North Area remain open. The South Area is now closed. The downhill course is also now closed - get down back to base using the Gondola. Kagura: Official snow depth of 270cm. All three main areas of Kagura remain pretty much fully open. Naeba: Official snow depth of 80cm. Part of the upper area of Naeba will open from until 6th May. The Daishamen course has now closed. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We ended up with another fine, sunny and warm day yesterday. And guess what, that's what today is going to be as well, with a high of around 25C forecast for the area. Today is the last day of the season for the GALA Yuzawa and Naeba resorts. Today is also the last day of the season for the Tashiro area of Kagura, the Kagura Number 5 lift and Mitsumata Collection. From tomorrow Kagura will remain open via the Mitsumata Ropeway. --- I'll post a Yuzawa Now report tomorrow morning and then after that try to get one up twice a week until Kagura closes to update you on the latest weather conditions. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: Official snow depth of 100cm. Most of the Central Area and part of the North Area remain open. The South Area is now closed. The downhill course is also now closed - get down back to base using the Gondola. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The weather sure did co-operate over Golden Week with mostly fine clear skies and warm sunshine. This morning there's some thin high cloud around but the sun is out. The forecast is for another fine and sunny day with temperatures again reaching up to around 25 degrees later on. Now that Golden Week has finished, we are just left with the Kagura ski area open in Yuzawa. The Mitsumata area is open as a connecting area for Kagura - so no shuttle bus needed yet, but not much snow remaining at Mitsumata. --- Kagura plans to be open until 31st May. Planned lifts: Mitsumata Ropeway Mitsumata Number 1 high speed lift Mitsumata Number 2 Romance lift Kagura Gondola Kagura Number 1 high speed lift Kagura Number 1/4 Romance lifts (Saturdays and holidays only) The Mitsumata area is now used only as a way to get to and from the main Kagura area. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Not quite as hot over the weekend though on Saturday it kind of felt a bit humid - first time I have felt that this year. Lots of rain to start Saturday off as well. Generally nice and sunny weather yesterday with a bit of wind blowing around. The sun is out again this morning and it should warm up once again this morning but cloud over later in the day with some rain forecast later tonight. Feels like it might be a bit windy again today, certainly from how it feels down here in town just now. Hopefully the rain expected tonight will have cleared up by first lifts tomorrow morning - after that mostly fine and settled weather conditions are forecast for the week. --- Kagura: Kagura plans to be open until 31st May. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I was planning on a pre-weekend report tomorrow, but I'll make it a bit earlier as there's some news... From yesterday (Wednesday 27th), a shuttle bus is taking skiers and boarders from the top of the Mitsumata Ropeway over to the base of the Kagura Gondola - unfortunately there's not enough snow now left on the Mitsumata area to keep it open as a 'connecting run' and so the Mitsumata lifts are now closed. With temperatures closing in on 30 degrees C again today in town, it's almost difficult to believe that Kagura is actually still open! It's going to be a hot one. But it is with the main run and the Gondola course still hoping to remain open until Sunday. 4 more days including today if you want some very last turns. The weather forecast is for the sun and hot conditions to continue through Saturday, with perhaps some rain on Sunday making things cooler for the last day of the season. --- Kagura: Kagura plans to be open until 31st May. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. And after another hot day yesterday, we actually got some rain overnight and this morning it is considerably cooler. The forecast is for a cloudy day, with perhaps some sun later on in the day. Temperatures probably won't rise much past the low 20's even here in town and so it might even feel chilly up there at Kagura. So, the last day of the season at Kagura and therefore for the whole region. Somehow they have managed to keep enough snow on the main Kagura run to remain open! The 2014-2015 season has at last come to an end. With some ski hills closing two months ago, this last part of the season with Kagura remaining open always seems to go on for a long time – especially as there have been close to no signs of snow and hot conditions down here in town for quite some time. Kagura always has the longest season and this time they were open for a period of 191 days… that’s over 6 months! So that was it. According to the chart that you can see below, we observed a huge 1303cm of snow in town this season since December. That’s getting on for 5m more than last season. And remember that is the snow that fell at town level – not high up on the mountains! Impressive numbers I’m sure you’ll agree. Probably the main talking point of the 2014-2015 season was the snowfall that we got in December. It felt like it wasn’t going to stop at some points, and it’s probably fun to go and read over the archive reports to remind yourself of how that developed. December 2013: 131cm observed at town level December 2014: 559cm observed at town level That’s some difference. More snow this last season than the previous one in the month of January as well, and about same in February. 2013-2014 season beat 2014-2015 for snowfall in the month of March though. So we basically got the bulk of our snowfall in the first part of the season, with the feeling that we could have really done with more fresh top-ups later on in the main season. There was no snow shortage problems though! Let’s hope that we get another impressive snowfall for 2015-2016 season. --- As with many popular regions of Japan, Yuzawa also enjoyed a noticeable increase in the number of non-Japanese on the slopes. A trend which will no doubt continue over the coming years. --- The SnowJapan Yuzawa Now reports will of course be back in time for the 2015-2016 season and no doubt Kagura will be aiming for a late November opening once again. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Drizzly rain is falling at the moment and similar to yesterday it doesn't feel particularly cold. So today is the 9th November and Kagura are hoping to be able to (part) open on 21st November - that's less than two weeks off! No new snow to report at the moment not much hope on the weekly forecast either really with a mix of clearer weather mid week and then back to rain next weekend. Not to worry, things can - and often do - change very quickly. Anyway, no snow yet but that isn't stopping Mitsumata opening tomorrow with it's 'snow mats'. The official stats say it's a 1100m long course with a width of 25-50m and including 30 'moguls' over 120m. A 1 day ticket will cost 3500 yen for adults and 2900 yen for children over 12 years old. Looking ahead over the next week there isn't much sign of imminent snow I'm afraid - more a mix of sun, cloud and rain through the week. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There is no new snowfall to report I'm afraid this morning, not even up at Kagura by the looks. And the sun is out! There's some cloud around up there, but blue sky as well. Actually quite a nice morning. Yesterday also started with some unexpected sunshine but conditions did get gloomier and worse as we entered the afternoon. The local forecast is still for rain all day today - with snow possible at Kagura - but for the moment the rain clouds are giving our valley a miss and tracking to the north. Looks like they will be moving in though by around lunchtime and we can hope for a slight drop in temperatures as well (please). It is currently 6C. Similar conditions are on the forecast for tomorrow, though perhaps we might miss out on this early morning sun. For keen folk wanting to try out the snow-mat fun up at Kagura Mitsumata, 1 day lift tickets are 3500 yen for adults, 3200 yen for seniors and 2900 yen for junior and senior high school students. The car park is apparently free this weekend. There is also a shuttle bus available from the East Exit of Echigo Yuzawa Station (note that the bus previously left from the West Exit of the station). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was really trying yesterday... trying to snow. And it did succeed in higher areas as well. Snow started falling from around mid-day in the Naeba area and on the mountains as well. Snowfall didn't quite reach the main town area of Yuzawa (as far as I experienced), where at times it was really raining very heavily. This morning the rain has stopped and again we have some clouds amongst clearer blue skies at the moment, even though the local forecast is more for rain through the day again. Things seem somewhat unpredictable at the moment, as if nature can't make up its mind if it wants to get into that full on winter feeling yet. Sitting here in the Ishiuchi area just to the north of central Yuzawa now, I can see that the top third of the slopes of Ishiuchi Maruyama, Yuzawa Kogen and the upper areas of Maiko Snow Resort are looking quite white with a blanket of snow. First time I have seen the snow get so close to town this season. Over at Kagura they are reporting this morning 5cm of snowfall in the Mitsumata area, and presumably more up at Kagura. It's not enough to open Kagura though, so the choice remains just the Family run at Mitsumata for the moment. We can be sure that they will open up more as soon as possible. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was a cold day and wet too, though it was snowing higher up which brings me to the news of the day... Kagura has opened the lower part of it's main course this morning -- 600m of it with a width of 20-30m. The snow-mat fun over at Mitsumata remains open but I would expect most people are going to be seeking out the real snow from today. The Kagura Number 1 Romance pair lift is running with of course the Kagura Gondola taking you from Mitsumata up to the main Kagura area. Good to see Kagura opening up, even though it is still limited. Forecast? It is still a bit wet with light rain falling just now but today looks like clear up later on and then sunny clearer skies are forecast for the day tomorrow in the region. It will be warmer as well with temps likely to rise above 10 degrees in town. Fingers crossed it will at least keep cold up there at Kagura.
