I do have some fresh snow to report this morning. All snow is always welcome of course, but it's just a few cm and I don't believe it will be enough to make much of a difference. I can just about justify my 2cm measurement this morning. Hirafu is reporting 5cm up top. Still, it definitely feels colder this morning and the general picture is certainly better than rain and warmth of the previous two days. It's unclear how things might develop over the next few days, but it doesn't look we can expect any more (significant) snow before Christmas. I'll try to have a word with Santa-san. On a more positive note, Friday is the day when we can expect the chance of a proper reset. That would be nice! It was snowing lightly earlier on when I started putting this report together, but the sun is now appearing through clouds more and more and I can see an increasing amount of blue sky. Still, there is hope that we might get a bit more during the day today. At the start of the day there seems to be an issue with the Annupuri Gondola. Not sure what's going on there... ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -6℃, light wind and slight snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -8.7℃, NW2.7m/s, cornice development, 10m/s wind during the nigh, light snowfall. Mikaeri 800m: -9℃, WSW1.3m/s, light snowfall. Hirafu Hanazono: -10.1℃, N5.1m/s, lightly clouded, good visibility, light snowfall. Hanazono 800m: -8.6℃, wind n/a 2.9m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei cape NW11m/s, Kamui cape NNE9m/s, 1022hPa, 1.4m/s. After 2 days of +5℃, cold air will finally start to flow in from this afternoon. The temperature dropped to -10℃ at 700m elevation. The slope condition is pretty bad and some trouble is seen in the chairlifts/gondola mechanism due to drastic temperature changes. The general avalanche risk is low, however in steep slopes with significant elevation changes, such as the sidewalls of the Backbowl, thin but hard “wind slabs” are prone to fracturing over wide areas. This increases the risk of high-speed surface avalanches, often referred to as “magic carpets.” Do not approach these areas. The courses are crowded and many beginners are present in the lower areas. Beware of high-speed collisions. Ski schools and groups must not stop in the middle of the trail or obstruct the flow of other skiers and riders. On time for your report today, and it’s going to be a warm and sunny start to the day, although my favorite weather site says we’ll have rain later in the day. The snow level really went down yesterday, and the stinkbugs came out. One of the surest signs of warm weather is when the stinkbugs, who spent the fall trying to get into the house and hide in crevices, think it’s time to get up and go when it gets significantly warm. Even had one fly down my shirt (and, yes, he released his nasty oily stink in there). People who have woodstoves also know about this—the room gets toasty, and the stinkbugs start buzzing around. All the stuff we don't want. For gnarly determined souls, the lifts are moving this morning. But I think more than a few people will be having a slow and relaxing start to the morning. Forecasts do seem to show temperatures gradually lowering and us possibly getting some sleet or snow. On occasions such as this*, I recommend toast. That's what I'm going to enjoy once I get this posted! (* Actually, suitable for all occasions!) ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 5am: +4℃, rain and melting snow. Moiwa 800m: +0.6℃, NNE1.0m/s, heavy fog. Mikaeri 800m: -2℃, NNE1.0m/s, heavy fog, poor visibility. Hirafu 1000m: +2.7℃, WSW6.0m/s. Hanazono 800m: 0.2℃, N0.9m/s. Snow depth: Goshiki 135cm, 800m 145cm, 920m 230cm. Snowmelt has continued and slope conditions are poor. Although temperatures dropped overnight, dense fog extends down to the base on the west side. Even though it’s a long-awaited Sunday, it’s better not to push it today. You can’t go against nature. This year, the snow hasn’t fallen the way we’d wanted. A late report today; year-end parties and a forgotten charger meant no computer... but I’m glad we’re reporting on the ongoing situation, where the early morning might have told us a different story. Meaning: sunny, very warm, a southern wind, all coming together to eat up the snow. Most everything is open now, except Kurohime and Seki Onsen, but those figures for the base areas are pretty low, and now getting lower. There are some open spots already here and there, and without a lot more snow that’s not going to get better! Looks like we could get snow Monday and Wednesday, but there’s also a chance that much of that could be rain. Oh, well, it will come around. I always discourage people from coming early season, which too many do, and then everybody leaves in March when there’s still a lot of good snow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba. The Hakuba Goryu webcam shows a mix of blue sky and cloud. The other two look like they are almost black-and-white. We do expect fine weather today, along with those long forecast warm conditions. It might get up to about 12C in the village this afternoon. The Milky quad lift and Soft Cream run are now open in the Iimori area of Hakuba Goryu. A few more lifts and runs are open at Happo-one, too. And Tsugaike, too. Obviously, ski areas want to get as much open as possible, especially with Christmas and then New Year approaching and more people gradually turn up. Early morning rain, but right now we have blue sky with pleasant shades of blue, the sun doing its thing and a collection of clouds giving us some shadows. It's as if the brightness/contrast control hasn't been turned up yet. I might not be describing that very effectively! Anyway... it is noticeably warmer. There is a southerly wind but it does not seem likely to affect lifts. Over at Annupuri the Jumbo Number 3 lift is now open. We're waiting for those top lifts to open up. No doubt we need more snow for that to happen. And for that we need it to be colder. As I am about to post this report just after 8:30am, it feels like it is clouding over somewhat and there is less sun... the images below are from around 8:10am. (It might rain later?) I must admit to being a bit confused with the weather this morning... ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 5am: +5℃, no rain or snow, snowmelt. Mikaeri 800m: +4.3℃, SW7.1m/s, no new snow, good visibility. Hirafu 1000m: +0.4℃, ENE2.5m/s. Hanazono 800m: -3.9℃, 5.2m/s direction n/a. Coastal Data- Benkei Cape NW10m/s, Kamui Cape SW16m/s, 1017hPa, 1.4m waves. Above 1,000 m: temperatures are below freezing, while below 800 m temperatures are above freezing, resulting in differing snow conditions by elevation. Beware of heavy, block-type avalanches on south-facing steep slopes, steep sidewalls along runs, and under lift lines. Do not duck ropes to enter these areas or other restricted areas. The influx of warm air will continue tomorrow. Creek levels have risen and snow bridges are more likely to collapse. The water is cold. Snow is coming off the roofs, make sure children are playing in safe areas. The light is weak, making it difficult to see undulations in the slopes. Beware losing control. All we can do now is wait. Live a comfortable day suited to the conditions. Pay attention to changes in the weather. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A beautiful sunny, sparkling-snow day to start more resort openings. And, apparently, there was enough new snow there for things to get going, with Akakan opening the entire hill. Alpen Blick (Ikenotaira) is going to delay until tomorrow (and good luck finding that information—you only have to go down three pages to find that out. Even the city site has no information on the resort.) That sticky snow over the past couple of days has left all the trees completely covered in snow, something like a skinny version of Zao’s famous juhyo (snow monsters). I guess way back when there were juhyo all the way down to Nagano... Save our winters, people! We have sunshine, blue sky and some thin cloud. A very fine morning to be out on the mountain. Looking ahead, we have to get past this bit of a mild bump that is centered around tomorrow. A Japan-wide thing, by the looks. We might have to endure some rain tomorrow - hopefully not, obviously - with a chance of snow later Sunday as temperatures drop once again. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 5am: -5℃, light winds, clear skies, no new snow. Mikaeri 800m: -9℃, WNW0.8m/s, 5cm new snow, good visibility. Hanazono 800m: -5.3℃, N2.0m/s. Coast Data- Benkei Cape NW11m/s, Kamui Cape WSW9m/s, 1026hPa, 1.6m waves. We are currently under a high pressure system, ocean waves and winds have decreased, and only light snowfall fell overnight. Data and observations indicate that cornice formation has settled and avalanche risk is low. The low temperatures continue, making the slopes excellent, but there is a lack of snow. The bamboo grass and bushes off-piste are still not buried, making off-piste skiing from the ski resort impossible. Niseko Rules were established out of necessity due to many accidents. A diverse range of people visit ski resorts to enjoy the snow. The Rules are in place to ensure the safety of all ski resort users. Please respect the Niseko Rules. The slopes are crowded. Don’t be overconfident, ride within your limits. Accidents can happen. Today an anemometer will be installed at Moiwa 800m. This report is based on observations and objective numerical data. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The Furano resort has announced they will open the Kitanomine Zone TOMORROW, two days ahead of schedule. This is exciting news as now the other half of the mountain will now be accessible. Unfortunately, they have also pre-announced that the Kitanomine Gondola will NOT be open tomorrow. Ah well. A puff of snow overnight, good cold temps today. Enjoy it, because tomorrow will not be so pleasant. The current prognostications for Sat/Sun are highs of +8 and +9 C, and fairly windy. Worse, there's even some r@!n in the forecast. Sigh. The only good news appears to be on Sunday afternoon/evening the temps will drop again and the little snowman reappears in the weather report. Six more shopping days until Christmas.
