The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hello everyone. I am extremely happy to be able to report some good snowfall this morning, with more due for the whole day. As I write this, it is coming down really nicely. Just how we love it. Earlier on Goryu was reporting 5cm and 47 was reporting 10cm. But it has been piling up more since then. Happo-one is reporting 25cm at Kurobishi and 5cm at Usagidaira. I think the early morning ongoing snowfall and different timings of those postings -- as well as strong wind blowing the snow around -- is making those inconsistencies inevitable. I have measured 15cm at 8:40am. Let's just say it's snowing, we have a good new layer and this is good. Wind might is also affecting various lifts this morning, so for folks who are here it is worth checking with official sources before heading out. Some of the data below might be out of date with this changeable situation. I'll be sure to carefully update once this storm passes and things calm down. This snowfall will probably ease off by tomorrow morning. I'd prefer we have 3-4 days of solid snowfall to really get pumping, but we'll take todays weather for now! Thank you. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Santa was a little late with the best present for the holidays; just before 5 am it was just beginning to snow, and the wind was really blowing. Right now we’ve got something like 20cm on the ground already. I’ll measure the total when things taper off and add it on tomorrow so we get a good figure for the total fall. The timing is great, though. A 5cm base really isn't workable, is it. I would say 15cm is also unusable, 30cm is barely OK. The national forecast says upwards of 80cm for Niigata Prefecture, of which we are a part (although lots of natives think we’re in Nagano. We’re just surrounded by Nagano on three sides, not part of it). The wind is pretty strong, too, so there is a lot of drifting at the moment. The snow started recently enough that the snowplows haven’t moved out yet, so there’s some interesting conditions out there (i.e. if your rental car isn’t 4WD, take the shuttle bus!). Nice to see some good minus temperatures, too. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 178cm Good morning from Niseko. My report yesterday appeared very late in the day and so lots of you might not have seen it. I recommend checking it out, especially as it has a sort of continuation today (see below). Report from 25th December 2025. I am very happy to report fresh snow this morning. It is snowing nicely as I am writing this, and there's more incoming. There's really not much on the ground yet, I measured just under 4cm, and some of it has been blowing about, but hopefully it will be building up today and tomorrow. Wind and visibility looks to be an issue today. At least some lifts are going to be affected at the start of the day, according to the official site (but I have to post before 8:30am today so cannot confirm actual openings). If you do venture out, let's extra care. We need much more snow for a reset and conditions to be how we like them. The forecast seems to look pretty normal for snow - ie. good - next week too. Yey! ------------------------------------ Perhaps in response to the data that I posted in my report yesterday, someone contacted me via SnowJapan, confused by a 'reputable website' (their words) that apparently is claiming that snowfall in Japan is currently plentiful and consistent, and that Japanese ski areas are enjoying excellent conditions and receiving regular refreshes. Huh?! It's important to note that I do not know which website they were referring to. I don't even know if it is Japan based or not. And, honestly, I really do not want to know. It is my policy to use only official ski area websites and local weather sources for my own information (outside of my personal observations, of course). I purposefully avoid everything else. Is that information source referring to the same destinations that we love, but versions of those places on Earth 2.0 or some other parallel universe? That might be it, as I increasingly feel like many humans are living on a different planet than I am! As far as I can tell, the low and lethargic snowfall this month (up until this point) is affecting almost every region of Japan. The only possible exception I am aware of was a period when central/eastern Hokkaido enjoyed a good spell of snow a couple of weeks ago - but not so much since then. Here in Niseko, we had a decent spell around the second week of December. Still, it was hardly spectacular, and I have only been able to report 4cm of snowfall across the last seven days before today and since 19th December. Just check out all the other Now reports and what they have been saying over the last week or two. Take a look at the snow depth data of ski areas throughout Japan; way down on a normal year. All variations of the same story. At the time of writing this (25th December), many ski areas across Japan had not yet been able to open at all. Many dearly want to open, but cannot because there is not enough snow. In some cases, there is no snow. In addition, there are more than a few ski areas that were partially open but have had to close again due to a lack of snow in recent days. Including in Hokkaido. To sum up, I think it is very clear that ski areas throughout Japan have been really struggling for snow this early season so far. Obviously, it is a situation that we all hope will improve quickly. Anyway, mind reset, let me get back to looking outside at the snow falling and out current fresh snow reset! :) ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -2℃, NE winds, blizzard, poor visibility. Mowia 800m: -6.2℃, NNE8.7m/s, gusts to 15m/s, major cornice and snowdrift development. Mikaeri 800m: -6℃, NNW2.3m/s, snow storm. Annupuri 1100m: -8℃, strong NNW winds.Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -8℃, N10.2m/s, major cornice and snowdrift development. Hanazono 800m: -5.9℃, NNE7m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape NNE13m/s(16m/s@4am), Kamui Cape E4m/s, 1001hPa, 2.0m waves. Heavy blizzard conditions and a little snow into the early hours brought some minor snowdrift development to the base of the mountain. Observations and data indicate a strong northerly wind with rapid cornice and snowdrift development higher on the mountain . Blizzard strength is fluctuating and slab development is not uniform. Tests indicate this wind slab is prone to fracture on weak layers from impact. The avalanche risk today is HIGH. Surface avalanches are likely to occur on steep slopes beside the trails where snowdrifts exceed 80cm. Do not thoughtlessly duck ropes beside the trails in search of fresh snow. The sudden drop in temperature and lack of snow have left the slopes in poor condition. There are many trees, rocks, bushes, and people. Be careful of collisions. Off-trail skiing from the ski resort is not yet possible. We are also having trouble, so please be patient for a while. If the wind shifts to the west, expect increased snowfall. Keep an eye on the snowfall trends. There is no 100% safety in this sport. Be careful of frostbite and slipping on the road. This might not last into tomorrow, and it might be new year before we get more, so it's important we get as much as possible please. Snow info on the official site for lower areas is confusing me early on, but the ski area is reporting 15-17cm in the upper areas. Wind is a thing today and I think it was blowing snow around early morning (it woke me up at about 5am), but it doesn't seem to be affecting lifts at the start of the day. Operations remain the same. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Merry Christmas, and hope you’re finding some holiday spirit in a nice warm indoor location. Santa would have trouble finding the chimney with the fog out there now. The bad conditions continue, with the snow basically gone at base level. Some of the resorts are trooping on, though, running lifts with snowpack figures that don’t seem to change (although we all know better). All I can say is, leave the new skis at home for the time being. Tomorrow: heavy snow is forecast, which will always be welcome. It would be great if it continued for several days (or weeks) but that isn’t the case. It doesn’t seem like there will be any significant snowfall until well into the first week of the new year. Like I say, I hate having to be the bringer of bad news, but we’re like farmers; we do what we can but nature is in charge up here. I would rather be curmudgeonly about something that is bugging me, but you can't be a grump about the weather. I have no influence and no control... My advice? Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 174cm Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas! As noted yesterday, my report is appearing very late today. By that, some of you may suspect that I am actually, in fact, Santa-san and I got a bit merry from all the sherry, mince pies, eggnog, fried chicken, cake and toast last night, but no. As I have no new snowfall to report, I'll get straight to what I prepared yesterday. I thought I'd do an update on something I did for the first time back on the first day of the season, 4th December. So I checked how much snowfall I had reported at base level by the report on 25th December in previous seasons. Here is what I found, sorted in order of ‘most snow’ at that point in time: 2017-2018 season: 489cm 2012-2013 season: 479cm 2014-2015 season: 464cm 2013-2014 season: 342cm 2023-2024 season: 333cm 2020-2021 season: 324cm 2021-2022 season: 318cm 2018-2019 season: 313cm 2022-2023 season: 301cm 2024-2025 season: 289cm 2016-2017 season: 264cm 2019-2020 season: 263cm 2015-2016 season: 201cm 2025-2026 season: 174cm Yikes, I almost wish I hadn't done it now. There's no getting round the fact that the data so far this season looks pretty grim. Other than the obvious thing on the list that doesn't need to be pointed out, I found it interesting how the seasons' sorting has changed quite a bit. The top two are the same as in early December, but the order of quite a few others has been juggled around. Most notable is the impressive showing during the 2014-2015 season, going from a joint-bottom ranking of 58cm to a very handy 464cm over a period of just three weeks. I recall fond memories of that particular December! Let us hope that over the coming weeks, perhaps starting imminently, the current 2025-2026 season might put on a similarly impressive showing and start looking healthier compared with previous seasons before too long. There's snow lined up on them there forecasts. Bring it on! Remember, friends. If you have been here having tons of fun this month... fabulous. Posts like today's are just me doing my taking a step back, big-picture, ongoing commentary thing... as I have over the years. I certainly do not intend to spoil anyone's fun or good memories. Mowia 800m: -3.7℃, NNW2.2m/s, Mikaeri 800m: -6℃, N1.1m/s, no new snow. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -5℃, light wind, no new snow, frozen. Hanazono 800m: -2.8℃, NNW2.1m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei cape NNE6m/s, Kamui cape NE2m/s, 1012hPa, 0.8m waves. A weak winter-type pressure pattern brought cold air, but no new snowfall. Conditions were calm both at sea and in the mountains. The snow is hard, good for alpine skiing training but the worst conditions for powder ski lovers. The slopes are crowded. Watch out for collisions. This avalanche information was started 40 years ago to prevent accidents, after being troubled by frequent avalanche incidents. Heavy snowfall from Sea of Japan blizzards and easy lift access to fresh snow on the slopes drew large crowds to Niseko, contributing to the high accident rate at the time. The Niseko Rules were created as a result. These rules aim to prevent accidents among ski resort users and are not for tourism promotion. Snow will fall eventually. Respect the Niseko Rules. Do not duck ropes. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Happy Christmas! I'm staying inside today as we wait for fresh snow to, er, freshen things up. It has been raining outside. The snow depth up at Yamabiko is still under 1m. On Christmas Day last year it was on 190cm at Yamabiko we had over 1m at base, with most of the mountain open. We have a lot of catching up to do. Hopefully, Nature is suitably embarrassed by this situation and will give us a good delivery tomorrow. We've been good girls and boys, haven't we? And Naski has most definitely been a very good vegetable.
