Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 1044cm Posted on Tuesday 3rd February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from the Yuzawa area where we still have snow clouds up above. It's not actually snowing just now, but light snow is expected during the day today. There's 10cm on the top of my car, fallen from the skies since yesterday day time and the snow walls around town are now once again looking refreshed and - high! Someone pointed this out yesterday... official snow depths for resorts have many with more than Kagura which we always expect to have the most. Whether lower down actually has had more or not is certainly open for question - especially when we remember that official snow depths at Kagura often don't budge even when they get 40cm for a few days in a row! Sometimes you feel certain resorts actually downplay the amount of snow. Having said that, and just an observation, but I feel there's more snow piled up on the side of the roads in the Shiozawa and Muikamachi area than there is in Yuzawa. Still huge amounts everywhere of course at the moment... OK so it's -2 degrees at the moment. Lots of fresh snow, should be excellent conditions everywhere right now. Forecasts disagree on what we have in store after tomorrow - clearer weather on Thursday, or rain? I know which I'd prefer. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 440cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 370cm Iwappara: 290cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 340cm Kandatsu Kogen: 360cm Maiko Snow Resort: 380cm (upper) 300cm (lower) Naeba: 260cm NASPA Ski Garden: 365cm Yuzawa Kogen: 320cm (Kogen) 260cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 230cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Tuesday 3rd February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1044cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 41 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 65cm reported on 3 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Light snow on and off during the day yesterday, but not much in terms of new cm... 2cm actually here, and right now very light snow is lazily falling from the sky with the forecsst for the day being just cloudy conditions and more of the same tomorrow as well. It feels and looks like it might clear up and be quite bright today actually. Not a whole lot of snow forecast until Sunday really going into early next week. Temperatures should remain generally low though and so snow conditions should keep good. Below are two photos taken yesterday in the Ishiuchi area just to the north of Yuzawa, some of those impressive walls of snow on the side of the roads. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 1051cm Posted on Friday 6th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Cloud did clear at times yesterday leaving us with periods of blue sky and sunshine, but the cloud was never far away and fairly quickly moving back in. It just doesn't seem to want to be clear for a day this season! This morning lots of cloud up above and we have had a bit of snowfall overnight. There's about 4cm on the top of my car and both Maiko Snow Resort and Kagura reporting 10cm. Some good fast conditions yesterday so a new layer and continued cold should keep things in decent condition. Snowfall is actually forecast for the day, but it's weak just at the moment. Looking to the upcoming weekend we are expecting some fine weather conditions tomorrow and perhaps the sun out, and slightly warmer conditions with a high of around +4C down at town level. From later on in the day on Sunday the next big delivery of snow is lining up with some expected moderate to heavy snow going into Monday. That should give everywhere a good decent refresh. Regular refreshes, that's what we want now. There's certainly no mid season lack of snow worries. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 430cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 350cm Iwappara: 260cm Joetsu Kokusai: 270cm Kagura: 340cm Kandatsu Kogen: 350cm Maiko Snow Resort: 360cm (upper) 280cm (lower) Naeba: 260cm NASPA Ski Garden: 340cm Yuzawa Kogen: 350cm (Kogen) 290cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 230cm --- Nighta in the area Nighta 'night skiing' - where some slopes are floodlit for skiing and snowboarding in the evening - is available at the following resorts in the area. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's a beautiful morning in the region here. Not many of those this season so far. I wonder if it will last - usually this season when we have had clear blue skies and sun, the day ends up cloudy or overcast. Let's see! For now though it's going to be a fantastic morning to be outside and on the slopes. Just a light sprinkling of snow since yesterday and up to 5-10cm being reported by Kagura this morning. The sun should warm things up somewhat today with a high of around +5 forecast for town level. Snowfall will be back later in the day tomorrow, maybe a decent amount as well. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 1073cm Posted on Monday 9th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Guess what... it ended up overcast and cloudy again yesterday! Another very busy day out there by the looks, and happily the rain waited until late on to start. Then it turned into snow. This morning at my place here in Minamiuonuma, there's 35cm of snow on the top of my car. Seems we generally got more than Yuzawa as my colleague has just called with his observation of 20cm. Maiko Snow Resort nearby is saying 20-30cm, as is Kagura higher up. So 20cm goes on the report (but there's definitely 35cm on my car!) Snow forecast all day today along with moderate wind, but all resorts are going to be open as normal. Kagura are not posting any wind-affected news just yet anyway. Snow forecast for tomorrow too with some forecasts giving us a bit of a break from it around Wednesday - before a return to snow late week. Limited visibility and colder than the weekend. Currently -4C in town. It's going to be fresh out there! --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 440cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 380cm Iwappara: 260cm Joetsu Kokusai: 270cm Kagura: 340cm Kandatsu Kogen: 380cm Maiko Snow Resort: 360cm (upper) 300cm (lower) Naeba: 260cm NASPA Ski Garden: 340cm Yuzawa Kogen: 340cm (Kogen) 280cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 240cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Monday 9th February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1073cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 45 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 94cm reported on 7 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 1103cm Posted on Tuesday 10th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Slightly over 30cm on the top of my car overnight and blue skies above us for first lifts... sounds almost perfect! Surprisingly we do have bright and sunny skies above right now - snow is forecast for the day and you can see the clouds to the north of Minamiuonuma... will they roll in as forecast or will we get to enjoy some clear conditions at least for a bit this morning? Yesterday we also had a few times when there were clearings in the clouds above, but snow moved on back in. Not a whole lot during the day though really, the snow that I report is pretty much all from overnight. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 40cm... with Kagura and Naeba both reporting 10-20cm. So it looks like we may have got more down here again. I don't know if it's really worth looking at the forecast with what's happening now, but it's snowfall for the day today (!) and into tomorrow, easing off in the morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Those blue skies that started yesterday morning didn't last for long, with snow falling for much of the day - some clearings of clouds at times, but usually short-lived. Not much cm from it though, and about 5cm of fresh snow outside from overnight. The sun is out again this morning as I write this, with a mix of blue skies to the north and some thin cloud in places. Nice and bright. Difficult to read what will happen during the day today with a few different forecasts. Take your pick from sunny or cloudy with some snow showers at times! One thing that does seem certain is that today will be warmer with a high of around +5C forecast this afternoon. It wasn't that cold last night and now it's hovering around 0C. It's also National Foundation Day in Japan which is a national holiday so it'll be interesting to see how many folk come visiting for this mid week day off. Expect places to be busier than on a normal weekend. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Another rather warm day yesterday with lots of sun in the morning, though becoming increasingly overcast and hazy as the day progressed. Before I went to sleep last night I could hear some rain - how much that continued I don't know, but it is snowing lightly now and we are still expecting snow today and tomorrow at least. Hopefully it'll get going and be coming down harder than it is just now. As yet just around 2cm to report. Kagura is reporting 5cm as of 7:30am. According to most of the forecasts, we can expect potentially heavy snow and strong winds as well at times over the next two days. So hopefully some good things to report tomorrow morning for the start of the weekend. With Chinese New Year next week helping things along, the next week or two will probably be the peak of the season in terms of number of visitors from overseas. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Ah yes, I like it when I can report 30cm of fresh snow in a morning. And that's about what we got this morning with 'the resorts that report' and the snow on the top of my car all saying the same this morning... a good foot of fresh snow. It was snowing quite heavily in the afternoon in particular yesterday and Yuzawa felt bustling. Feels like it is going to be a busy weekend. Folks who are looking for the deep fresh will be happy, families looking for a gentler sunny day less so. The snowfall is set to continue through all of today and perhaps into tomorrow as well though there's a chance it will be easing off tomorrow. --- There's a wind too this morning and it's playing with plans up at Kagura. Going to be another day off for the Tashiro Ropeway unfortunately and Kagura will be open from Mitsumata Ropeway just to the Mitsumata Number 2 Romance lift to start with... they'll be trying to get the Kagura Gondola and quad going if conditions allow. --- Already hearing news of a 'season extension' due to the large amount of snow this season. NASPA Ski Garden near the town centre were planning on being open until Sunday 5th April, but they have announced that they'll be moving the lifts on the following two weekends as well (11th, 12th; 18th, 19th). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this season 1165cm Posted on Sunday 15th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa and apart from a surprise hour or so of some blue skies and sun mid-morning, it was snow for most of the day. It didn't get particularly cold - especially out of any wind which wasn't significant lower down - and today should probably be the same, with the temperature around 0 degrees here at town level. There was about 10cm of snow on the car during the day yesterday, and this morning there's another 12cm to add to that. I see that Kagura this morning are reporting an impressive 60cm! (Though unfortunately windy conditions are going to prevent the Tashiro area from opening today again and Mitsumata will at first just be up to Kagura Number 1 pair lift. Tomorrow should be amazing up there with so much fresh untouched snow). Conditions should be pretty great everywhere though. Check out the snow depth numbers coming from GALA Yuzawa as well... currently 470cm. Snowfall expected to ease today - this afternoon perhaps - and tomorrow we might get to see some sunshine break out from the clouds over Yuzawa. --- One bit of news that I have just noticed - Kandatsu Kogen is going to be closed today. - Yuzawa Now: Monday 16th February 2015
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 1180cm Posted on Monday 16th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa and it's a much calmer start to the day today. Snow through most of the day yesterday, along with some strong winds as well. There was a part clearing of the clouds mid afternoon for a short time but it wasn't long lived with snow and wind suddenly back. Conditions eased during by late evening and there was no new snowfall since last night, though I see Kagura is reporting 10cm. There was another 15cm of snow during the day though, so that is what I'm logging for the report. Strong winds yesterday made for calling the numbers different! So this morning is calmer and while there is a lot of cloud around there's also some blue sky here and there. Forecast says to expect more of that and maybe some sunny conditions later in the day which should be quite mild with temps in low positive numbers. Cloud tomorrow, with more snow forecast for Wednesday and Thursday. Kandatsu Kogen is open again today after being closed yesterday due to an avalanche. Safety confirmed and all back to normal now. All of Kagura should be open as normal as well this morning. Conditions are going to be superb up there with no-one playing in the all that snow over the weekend. In fact it should be great everywhere! --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 490cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 390cm Iwappara: 280cm Joetsu Kokusai: 290cm Kagura: 370cm Kandatsu Kogen: 400cm Maiko Snow Resort: 400cm (upper) 310cm (lower) Naeba: 290cm NASPA Ski Garden: 385cm Yuzawa Kogen: 380cm (Kogen) 340cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 260cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Monday 16th February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1180cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 51 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 201cm reported on 13 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 19th February 2015
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 1181cm Posted on Thursday 19th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Soon after I posted the report yesterday the rain had turned into wet snow, but it was back between the two during the day. A bit wet even when it was snowing really. Not much snow to report down in town, just a sprinkling really, though Maiko does seem to be reporting 5-10cm on the mountain this morning and Kagura reporting 15cm so it sounds like there is some fresh up there to be found. It looks like today is again going to be borderline rain-sleet-snow here in town. Right now there's actually a break in the clouds and even some blue sky - that's not forecast to continue though. Signs that it will get slightly colder tonight and tomorrow so we will perhaps have some decent snowfall to report tomorrow. Temperatures still set to rise over the weekend - Sunday in particular. Let's hope for a return to winter sometime next week. In the meantine, Happy Chinese New Year and have a fine day. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 460cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 370cm Iwappara: 270cm Joetsu Kokusai: 290cm Kagura: 370cm Kandatsu Kogen: 390cm Maiko Snow Resort: 390cm (upper) 280cm (lower) Naeba: 290cm NASPA Ski Garden: 345cm Yuzawa Kogen: 360cm (Kogen) 320cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 260cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Thursday 19th February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1181cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 52 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 202cm reported on 14 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
