I have measured 6cm. So while it is not a huge amount, we will take it thankfully and it is still snowing so hopefully there is more coming this morning with the next after today due on Sunday. For many the New Year holidays are now over so there will likely be less people around for the next few days before the weekend. We have had some more snow (Yakebitaiyama early morning reporting 10cm), but as I write this there is actually a bit of sun shining through my window. Might just be temporary, as we do have snow forecast for the day. It feels generally quite bright. [Update as I am about to post --- seems to be getting brighter]. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A little more reasonable morning today; it gets busy here in winter! So many things to do, so many people to meet, so much snow (finally) to deal with. The last one is tough, especially when we get a massive fall like the last one, but, you know, there is some satisfaction in getting things ready to roll as the snow walls rise ever higher.... My editor here (part of the full SnowJapan reporting team) sent me a link to local paper reporting on something I’d heard a rumor about. Seems that a team of them foreigners were out in our sidecountry and set off a pretty good slide that blocked the road to Highland Hotel, an accommodation kind of off the road up past Seki Onsen and on to Tsubame Onsen. The last spot on the road, in other words, and apparently cut off for a while because of those mad snowboarders. There have been several groups out there filming videos, including one very famous boarder guy (who will go nameless because I don’t know if he was involved in this). I do know that we’ve had some pretty hairy things happening as people want to jump off avy barriers (like several broken femurs, and lots of slides that fortunately haven’t killed anybody yet). Bad press, kids! Don’t be them bad foreigners doing thoughtless things in the backcountry. Good snow today, by the way. It feels like quite a long time ago when the new snowfall I report was 'just' a single digit. 豪華 I'm hoping that I can report at least some fresh snow in every report through until the 31st (and beyond of course). Don't get bored of this, now. It can't last forever! All the more reason why we should make the most of it and... kansha. Should be another day of very fine conditions on the mountain, with hopefully not much wind. Visibility seems fine and is fairly good around base and quite bright, but the Hirafu webcam higher up shows much more limited. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -9℃, 15cm snowfall overnight. Moiwa 800m: -11.0℃, snowdrift development stabilised, 20cm new snow. Annupuri 1100m: -12.5℃, data n/a. Village 1000m: -12.3℃, WNW2.1m/s, calm. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -11.8℃, SSW1.9m/s, 10cm snowfall overnight, calm. Hanazono 800m: -10.4℃, SSW3.3m/s, 20cm snowfall. Sea of Japan Benkei cape S4m/s, Kamui cape W5m/s, 10137hPa, 1.0m waves. Across the entire low-pressure system, isobars are widely spread, resulting in calm conditions both at sea and in the mountains. Snowfall consists of light, crystal snow totaling 10-20 cm by morning. Wind-generated snow slabs from previous days are consolidated and stabilised beneath the new snow, sintered like marble, with no weak-line fractures. Based on observations and evaluation of all data, the overall avalanche risk is low. Light slough (powder snow avalanche) is likely on open, steep slopes above the tree line. Stay clear of the slope base as this can trigger surface avalanches. All peak gates will open. Follow the patrol’s instructions. Group leaders bear significant responsibility.
