Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 22cm
Snowfall at base this season 809cm

Posted on Thursday 29th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

Another nice snowfall overnight, pretty light it seems, at least using the highly scientific what-comes-out-of-my-snowthrower test (tons of light flying powder; so much that I couldn’t see that I was painting the wall of a neighboring house with fresh snow).

We have certainly recovered from the early January deficit of snow; it’s really amazing out this morning with the trees and roofs absolutely loaded with snow.

You know I don't like sunny days as much as pounding snow days, at least for the skiing, but we need a little sun to heat up these roofs (most of which are metal) and get some of that snow down. So we can then blow it all away once again....
