With all the wind, almost impossible to gauge how much snow actually fell, but 5 cm seems about right for now. The resort is reporting about 10 cm on top. Forecast calls for wind/snow all day today, so we might get some more. Given the weather conditions, the resort has preemptively notified that any lift may be closed due to weather conditions. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . An early report, because I have to get out there on this sunny and warm day. The morning news pretty much focused on how warm it’s going to be, and how dangerous the falling snow can be. A lot of roofs here still have a lot of snow on them, so that’s pretty good advice. An old, unoccupied house just below Akakan dropped a huge load right on the road a few days ago; luckily (amazingly?) there was no car below, or anyone walking. Enough came down that the results would have been really bad for either car or human. The next wave of heavy snow looks like it will follow, so look for interesting snow news for the weekend! There is no fresh snow to report and we have a bright and sunny kind of morning with some cloud. Mt Yotei is looking fine over there to the east, with a kind of hazy/thin cloud kind of feel going on. I can't find the right words. It has been calm this morning, but some stronger winds are expected later and also tomorrow... along with a drop in temps again and some fresh snow. We should be having at least several days of that, hopefully without too much wind. I should be back to posting at my normal time tomorrow. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -6°C, no snowfall, calm, frozen surface. Moiwa 800m -7°C, no data, no snowfall, calm. Annupuri 1100m -9.4°C, WNW 5.1m/s. Village 1000m -7.7°C, NNW 4.3m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m -8.9°C, N 4.7m/s, no snowfall, calm. Hanazono 800m -6.2°C, NNW 2.3m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape N 5m/s. Kamui Cape NNW 4m/s, 1017hPa, wave height 1.1m. The pressure gradient is weak ahead of the low-pressure system; both the sea and the mountain weather is calm. No snowfall. Based on morning observations and data evaluation, the avalanche risk is low. Do not enter strictly prohibited areas such as Ambetsu, Haru-no-taki, and Yunosawa in search of snow. If you see someone doing so, please warn them of the risks they’re taking and explain the Niseko Rules. As the low-pressure system approaches, south winds will strengthen from the afternoon, turning into a westerly blizzard by midnight. Wind-carried snowdrift slabs will develop, and the avalanche risk will rise drastically. The predicted trigger layer is the low-pressure snowfall layer from Feb 3-4. The rapid development of wind-packed slabs causes fractures along lines of weakness within the snowpack due to their own increasing weight. Pay close attention to the snowfall transition. Do not over-rely on pit checks. Stay away from leeward gullies, as well as slopes of slabs of wind-affected snowdrifts for some time from tomorrow. The mountain is tracked out from yesterday, but the groomers are in excellent condition. Beware of out-of-control collisions. Do not duck the ropes. The fun that I had whilst doing my research was just a bonus! We have clear blue skies and sunshine mid-morning. It was cold early on, but has started to warm up a bit now and we do expect a few days of relative warmth. Saying that, hopefully it won't get much over 5C. A bit of sun currently over at Hanazono. It feels a milder this morning and might get into low positive (C) numbers during the day. Much colder conditions again and another good fresh delivery of snow is due from Friday onwards, according to most forecasts. All lifts are go! (Well, apart from that lazy Country Road one at Niseko Village). ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Base: -2°C, 10cm new snow from the low-pressure, calm. Moiwa 800m: -4.8°C, 15cm new snow has reset the surface. Annupuri 1100m: -6.8°C, WNW 6.7m/s (W15m/s at 2:00 AM). Niseko Village 1000m: -5.5°C, W 4.0m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -6.4°C, N 3.5m/s. Hanazono 800m: -3.2°C, SW 4.4m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape WNW 12m/s (NW 18m/s at 4:00 AM). Kamui Cape: SW 13m/s, 1014hPa, Wave height 1.8m. Warm air is flowing in ahead of the low-pressure system, bringing 15cm of new snow to the western side of the mountain range. Above 800m, pre-dawn high winds have caused the snow to form soft slabs, resetting the surface. No significant risks were noticed during the morning observations and gates are expected to open. Follow the instructions of the ski patrol. Do not enter the Ambetsu strictly prohibited area by crossing past Gate 6. As long as there are people who ignore the rules, Gate 10 will not be reinstated. This current low-pressure snowfall will become a failure layer under the wind-affected snowdrift slabs brought by the next storm. Pay close attention to the snowfall transition. The snow is shallow but still good. Poor visibility, stay alert for sudden weather changes. On open steep slopes, shallow avalanches characteristic of low-pressure snowfall—powdery like flour—can easily occur. Do not stay put at the bottom of the gullies. Is your beacon on? Yakebitaiyama was reporting 20cm of snowfall early this morning; Kumanoyu reporting 10cm. There are light snow clouds with us at the moment and it is snowing. But it is quite bright in places and it feels like it might stop during the day. A few days of sun and milder conditions forecast from tomorrow; but there's more fresh snow due beyond that. A really nice snowfall overnight; big flakes, not too much wind and just enough depth to recharge the mountain a bit. I’ve been surprised this year with how many Europeans and North Americans are visiting Myoko. Some first-time countries for me here, including both some Bulgarians and a friendly pair of Croats. Welcome, nice to talk to you, glad that you were all having a nice time in the snow. And fresh reports from all the resorts! That's pretty unusual, but I also found it interesting that some have had no change in snow depth or temperatures for days, others lost some snow, others gained. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Calmer conditions yesterday with a largely cloudy day and some light snow falling at times. A bit more snow this morning. Looks like it has been one of those days where more snow fallen to the north. Cortina is reporting 10-15cm 'near the mountain top', other ski areas not so much. It was snowing earlier on but has eased off now down here and we do expect some clearer skies, though the mountains still have a fair bit of cloud covering them. Wednesday and Thursday should bring us some clear skies from early on. It is also going to be milder. Let us hope not too mild. I have been enjoying the cold of late.
