Yes, we have some snow down to base since my last report. 5-10cm in places and it is still snowing as 7:30am. The ski area, while not posting any numbers from base, is saying there is 15cm up at Uenotaira (and 8cm at Yamabiko). It's not expected to continue for long but there is some more snow on forecasts for around Tuesday and then late week. In fact, just now as I am writing this report, it seems to have become a bit brighter. This snow comes after starting out as rain, but we've had just over 10cm (of snow) overnight up until now. The ski area is itself reporting 10cm. We'll take it! The Number 3 pair lift will be re-opening today and the upper part of the Giant courser will be skiable again. Forecasts seem to give us a chance of further snow today, but right now there is a bit of sun is breaking through clouds (and it looks quite blue sky and sunny over on the Tangram side). It's fairly mild but we have some more fresh snow. I have 6cm to add this morning and it is snowing now as I write this report. Quite nicely, too, actually. I wonder how long it might continue. This morning we have limited visibility out there in upper areas and some pesky wind conditions too. Over the next several days forecasts tell us to expect more, and a drop in temps too, so that definitely sounds suitably excite. I have taken a look at a few longer term forecasts as well as seeing what the Japan Meteorological Agency has to say. From what I have seen, these next several days may well end up being the last chance of some decent snowfall numbers this season. Top lifts on hold at the start of the day. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -0℃, low pressure front delivered 10cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -3.4℃, SSE5.7m/s, wind & snow, poor visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -5.1℃, ESE9.3m/s. Village 1000m: -4.1℃, SSW5.8m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -4.9℃, N14.4m/s, blizzard. Hanazono 800m: -2.7℃, N5.8m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape S15m/s, Kamui Cape ESE6m/s, 1010hPa, wave n/a. Due to the approaching low pressure there is strong southerly winds at higher elevations. Lifts on the Hirafu side will be closed, and all peak gates are closed. Heavy snowdrifts are expected to accumulate above 700m, and the risk of surface avalanches will rapidly increase this afternoon through tomorrow. Even in forested areas below 700m, the low-pressure snowfall and subsequent wind-driven snow slab formation (slabs, snowdrifts) will make surface avalanches likely. Niseko’s winters are characterized by weak snowstorms with wind speeds of around 10 m/s, which delight us every morning by depositing 15-20-30cm of snow on the mountain. While the avalanche risk from this type of snow is not zero, it is low. However, when wind speeds exceed 18 m/s, dense, unstable wind-driven slabs develop in the leeward valleys, which can cause avalanches. Gate opening and closing is based on observations and data evaluation. Niseko respects the freedom to ski off-piste, but does not encourage it. Outside the gates is not part of the ski resort. Open gates do not guarantee the mountain is safe. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Rain to wet snow once again. It’s actually snowing now; it could be sunny high up on the mountain, but it certainly isn't a powder day. Slush down at base, really. At this time of year, fresh snow is nice basically to make things nice and white again. The forecasts sometimes make it seem like we’re going to get a big dump of snow (does happen in March!), but this year the long-term forecast seems to always shrink down to a few cm.... It does look like snow tomorrow, and it will be colder, so let’s enjoy whatever we get! Might just be a ski hike out in the woods with the dog, but that’s pretty good skiing, too! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Cloudy skies yesterday. I think we got rained on overnight but it is snowing quite nicely up on the mountains and trying to down here at base, too, at the start of ski area operations this morning. Happo-one reporting up to 5cm and Goryu 3cm in upper areas. Looks like poor visibility and quite windy too but ski areas do seem to all be opening as planned. It is currently just over 1C. I am hopeful that I might be able to bring more snowy news tomorrow morning.... -------------------------------- Usually I start to add details about ski lifts and runs that remain open and/or have closed in the latter part of the season. I do intend to do that again this season, but I am currently unable to devote the time to start doing that. It's usually mid to late March when I start. In the meantime, my very general comment would be that snow cover remains fine higher up and all ski areas remain open. However, some lower/base runs are looking increasingly bare and some have been closed. You would no doubt be doing this anyway if you are actually here, but I do recommend checking with official ski area sources before heading out. I might not have cm to add to the report from base (just a light dusting) but the ski area this morning is reporting 14-15cm fresh snow up on the top Yamabiko and Uenotaira areas. That sounds good! Forecasts indicate the chance of some more during the day today. Right now the webcams show me limited visibility up in those top areas, better from Paradise down... and a bit of blue sky to be seen away from the mountain. I hope I might be able to add some more cm to base numbers tomorrow. Kind of a dusting thing going on early this morning, enough for me to award 1cm to this report. Right now, though, the sun is shining through the clouds in some places. Still a lot of cloud around. And still there is some snow there on forecasts over the next few days. I will be interesting to see how this develops. Anything meaningful? We'll see soon enough! It is surely some kind of typo, but this morning Niseko Annupuri (on the Niseko United site) the top snow depth has increased by 55cm since yesterday. (With 10cm of fresh snow being reported). I love the sound of that, but... if only!!!! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: 0℃, trace new snow. Moiwa 800m: -3.4℃, NNW2.8m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -5.5℃, NNW3.0m/s. Village 1000m: -4.3℃, NNW4.6m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -4.8℃, N4.9m/s. Hanazono 800m: -2.8℃, N0.5m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNE8m/s, Kamui Cape E2m/s, 1022hPa, wave n/a. The atmospheric pressure gradient is shallow, the sea and mountains are calm and there has been no significant snowfall. The 25cm of low-pressure snowfall caused an extensive avalanche along the east ridge yesterday. Watch for similar conditions today. Wet snow avalanches, like those caused by low-pressure snowfall, are heavy and spread broadly through the forest.On open, steep slopes around 700m, positive temperatures are beginning to melt the snowpack, increasing the possibility of full-depth avalanches. Be careful in Moiwa Bowl, Kozan no Sawa(Back Bowl) and Annupuri Osawa. Full-depth avalanches are dangerous, but they will not cause accidents if there are no people around. Gate opening times have not yet been decided. Decisions on whether gates are open are made based on morning observations, snowfall and temperature data collected at various mountain locations, Japan Coast Guard data and from ski resort patrol and groomer operator reports. Outside the gates is not part of the ski resort. Gates are opened and closed to prevent accidents off-course. There has been some more fresh snow (bit wet) with the ski area reporting nearly 15cm up on the mountain and a handful of cm down at base. Fine this morning but we expect wind later on.
