Rain/sleet/perhaps wet snow depending on where you are, along with limited visibility. Tomorrow is a national holiday in Japan and so many people are going to be enjoying a long weekend, and the weather looks like it will generally be much more friendly. Sun should be a feature over that long weekend. I've taken down the official snow depth data (as it's not very meaningful) and replaced it with planned closing dates. --------------------- Ski area planned closing dates Below are the planned closing dates of ski areas in Shiga Kogen. As I looked around during my early morning walk earlier on, it felt quite windy and everywhere was looking silvery-grey, kind of hazy. Conditions are... well, they're not brilliant of course, but I think we're (or should I say, I'm) at the stage in the season where it's more comfortable accepting that. Any fresh snow is a bonus now and if some forecasts are to be believe we still might actually get some before Saturday. And then early next week. Interesting. Tomorrow is Vernal Equinox Day and a national holiday in Japan. Yey! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -1°C, frozen. Moiwa 800m: -1.9°C, ESE 2.6m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -4.3°C, SE 1.7m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -2.9°C, SSW 3.6m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -3.5°C, N 10.9m/s. Hanazono 800m: -0.5°C, NNE 9.3m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape: S 9m/s. Kamui Cape: ENE 3m/s, 1008hPa, wave height unknown. A low-pressure system is moving north along the Pacific side, making the atmosphere unstable. Cold air continues to flow in above 700m, but winds remain light except at the Hirafu summit. The mountain is frozen down to the base. Gate openings are TBD depending on lift operations; please respect the judgment of the ski patrol. In the heavy-snow region of Niseko, springtime brings a high risk of large-scale full-depth avalanches sliding off the ground in areas like Kozan-no-sawa (Backbowl), Annupuri Osawa, Moiwa Bowl, and Mikaeri Bowl. Slides on the West Ridge sometimes reach the prefectural road. While we allow out-of-bounds skiing under the Niseko Rules, we close the gates on days deemed too dangerous. This decision is not arbitrary; it is based on a comprehensive assessment at 5:00 AM using field observations, site-specific data, and the professional judgment of the ski patrol. We are often asked what we would do if an accident occurred while the gates were open; in that case, we can only offer our sincerest apologies. While there may be better methods, Niseko has successfully prevented winter accidents using this approach. We have heard that Mr. Matsumoto of the Hokkaido Police, who has long been dedicated to search and rescue in the Furano mountains, is transferring to Mori Town in southern Hokkaido. Still fairly bright, though. 'Evening skiing' (masquerading as 'night skiing') until this coming Sunday (22nd March). Interesting to see snow forecast for our mountain on Friday! We'll have some of that, please. I should be back to my normal time tomorrow. Kamui Cape: NW 4m/s, 1020hPa, wave height unknown. Cold air is moving in, bringing 3–10 cm of snowfall through the morning. Be cautious of shallow surface avalanches on open, steep slopes with significant elevation changes. Most gates are expected to open. Follow patrol’s instructions and seek guidance before going out of bounds; areas outside the designated ski runs are not part of the resort. Moiwa No. 6 gate will be closed due to the risk of full-depth avalanches in the Moaiwa Bowl, the lower part of Back Bowl, and slopes below 800 meters in elevation. Do not duck the ropes to go off-piste. The Niseko Rules were established to prevent accidents outside the ski resort’s designated courses, based on past experiences of frequent accidents. Users must be aware that these rules exist and that they have an obligation to follow them. The ski resort is also responsible for rope monitoring and gate management. Areas outside the ski resort are national or prefectural forests, and landowners such as the national and prefectural governments are not liable for accidents occurring outside the resort. Since out of bounds skiing is permitted, the ski resort bears significant responsibility. Cracks are hidden beneath fresh snow. Cracks are not visible from above. Caution. As temperatures rise before noon, snow below 700 meters in elevation becomes unstable. Be careful of falls and collisions. Do not casually take beginners off-piste. While a beacon is not mandatory, carrying one is recommended. That wind is going to keep on eating the snowpack; add on tomorrow’s rain and we’re going to have some bare spots on some of the runs. Spring is definitely here today; so is pollen from the sugi (cryptomeria) trees. The national reporting on this annual phenomenon has Niigata at the top end along with most of the northeast. There's a fair amount of cloud around but also blue sky and sunny sunshine. Just under 1C as of 10:30am. Oh yes and several cm of snow early morning. There might be some more at the end of the week. It's not over yet, as they say. Sorry if you took from my message yesterday that I was somehow stopping my reports. Not to worry... I will, of course, be with you until the end of the season. You can delight in me trying to find something to write about every morning for quite a while longer! Remember, you have paid up for the whole season and so are obliged to read right through until the end! After some fresh air I'm feeling more genki this morning. :) ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -2°C, light wind, 3cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -5.7°C, WNW 1.7m/s 3-10cm snowfall. Annupuri 1100m: -7.6°C, WNW 4.3m/s, 5cm snowfall. Niseko Village 800m: -6.3°C, NNW 2.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -7.1°C, N 8.0m/s, gusts of wind at times, 3cm snowfall. Hanazono 800m: -4.7°C, ENE 3.4m/s, 3cm snowfall. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape: S 5m/s. Kamui Cape: NW 4m/s, 1020hPa, wave height unknown. Cold air is moving in, bringing 3–10 cm of snowfall through the morning. Be cautious of shallow surface avalanches on open, steep slopes with significant elevation changes. Most gates are expected to open. Follow patrol’s instructions and seek guidance before going out of bounds; areas outside the designated ski runs are not part of the resort. Moaiwa No. 6 gate will be closed due to the risk of full-depth avalanches in the Moaiwa Bowl, the lower part of Back Bowl, and slopes below 800 meters in elevation. Do not duck the ropes to go off-pieste. The Niseko Rules were established to prevent accidents outside the ski resort’s designated courses, based on past experiences of frequent accidents. Users must be aware that these rules exist and that they have an obligation to follow them. The ski resort is also responsible for rope monitoring and gate management. Areas outside the ski resort are national or prefectural forests, and landowners such as the national and prefectural governments are not liable for accidents occurring outside the resort. Since out of bounds skiing is permitted, the ski resort bears significant responsibility. Cracks are hidden beneath fresh snow. Cracks are not visible from above. Caution. As temperatures rise before noon, snow below 700 meters in elevation becomes unstable. Be careful of falls and collisions. Do not casually take beginners off-piste. While a beacon is not mandatory, carrying one is recommended. Not very contrast-y. Forecasts seem to be telling us to expect more sun over the coming days and perhaps some mild-feeling conditions. All lifts open as normal. I don't know if it's the general news or something else, but I'm not feeling very talkative or easily finding words at the moment. Even with my avoidance of social media and news as much as possible, I can't avoid the insanity and stupid that seems to be going on. It might be somewhat amusing if it was a rubbish 80's movie. (And we'd probably even deem that as far-fetched and silly). But here we are, in the real world. Perhaps I should not elaborate on my thoughts further than that. I just wanted to mention a self-aware acknowledgement of my less-than-normal genki-ness. I need to get out in the fresh air I think! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -1°C, no snowfall, frozen. Moiwa 800m: -3.6°C, WNW 4.6m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -6.6°C, W 3.5m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -5.4°C, WNW 1.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -6.0°C, N 2.0m/s. Hanazono 800m: -2.7°C, NNE 3.4m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape: NNW 8m/s. Kamui Cape: W 6m/s, 1019hPa, wave height unknown. The pressure gradient is loose, and both sea and mountain are calm with cold air flowing in. Major gates will open. Understand the risks before heading out-of-bounds; the area outside is not a ski resort. We are seeing a resurgence of people crossing ropes who either do not know or disregard the Niseko Rules. Do not enter strictly prohibited areas. Do not duck the ropes along the courses. Currently, the risk of full-depth glide avalanches is high in all south-facing valleys. To avoid accidents, refrain from skiing in the gully bottoms. Use particular caution below 800m, where rising temperatures are accelerating snowmelt. In the past, a young man skiing in the prohibited Yunosawa area after 4:00 PM was buried by an avalanche from the sidewall; he was not found until June. Nature is unforgiving of mistakes, regardless of race, nationality, or experience. Act wisely. I almost forgot to get my report out this morning; it’s pleasantly cool with some blue skies and sun, trees up the mountain a bit white (whether it’s snow or ice, it’s hard to tell). Just a nice day to get out, and I was almost out the door before I remembered that I need to get in touch with our readers with some fresh info. Which, again, is not so fresh: almost all the resort have new dates on their reports, but completely unchanged information, except maybe the temperatures.... Can’t blame them, with pretty low numbers, but the snow is holding. Things are good! I'm out there, folks.
