The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Great to see that snow yesterday and I have more to add (from yesterday since my report). It might not have been peak season dry and fluffy, but it was still snow and most definitely better than the rain that lower areas go. Yakebitaiyama was reporting as much as 15cm of fresh snow! This morning the sun is out. Back to cloud tomorrow and perhaps some rain (I wonder if there might be any more snow left) and possibly windy too. Sunday should be calmer and perhaps brighter. --------------------- Ski area planned closing dates Below are the planned closing dates of ski areas in Shiga Kogen. - Niseko Now: Wednesday 8th April 2026
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 875cm Good morning from Niseko. I bring snowy snow news! Yes, a modest dusting-plus of snow even down to lower levels. Hanazono and Hirafu are both saying 5cm. I say (or, more accurately, measure) 2cm. Cloudy earlier but now lots of blue sky and sunshine. Some friendly cloud here and there. Seems quite windy and top lifts are delayed but hopefully will open. Anyway, beautiful. How are you all? I've had a few people send in some words of encouragement over the last few days as I continue to battle on to the end of the season. It seems like there's quite a lot of people still reading these reports, even as the season winds down and the real world gets pushed to 'previously unimaginable limits of insanity'. (That last bit is a quote from someone who wrote in - good one). Even when you try to avoid it as much as possible, it's close to impossible to avoid the obnoxious reality show that is being imposed on us all, isn't it. I suppose writing these reports is a bit of therapy for me as I continue to appreciate the beauty of our nature and our world every day. Even given the always complicated feeling as the end of the season approaches! Anyway, thanks for your comments, and I wish you all well. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 638cm Posted on Friday 20th February 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning. My car was very icy this morning, but it will be warming up today. After that welcome fresh snow yesterday, the whole of Japan is expecting an unseasonably warm upcoming long weekend. It will probably be a busy one with the weather and also the fact that Monday is a national holiday. Concerns about warmth and future snowfall aside, it should be fun out there. I recommend sunscreen, perhaps one less layer and definitely the right goggle/sunglasses. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . We are now into the last four days of the official ski season here in Hakuba. Four holidays, so we would normally expect a lot of people to be around (and not just for skiing/snowboarding). But four ski areas remain part open and gambatte-ing for these four more days. It's a bit of a grey morning. Is that fog up at Tsugaike? File under 'gas'. (See image below). At least it's not raining any more... but we may (or may not) get some more of that. I think I've said it before but I want some clear sunny skies to finish the season. We might get lucky and get some of that. Anyway, I feel obliged to go and play on the snow while I can.
