  • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 29th January 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 974cm Posted on Thursday 29th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . So it was snowing for most of the time yesterday, and since my report yesterday there's been 5-10cm of snow fall. Kagura report 10cm this morning and Maiko saying 5-10cm, so you can get the idea. Not as much as we might expect for after a day of snowfall, but still... just very light snow lazily falling now and it's forecast to ease off - might even get some sunshine later on today; if not, just cloudy. It is currently -2 degrees in town and only the faint outline of the mountains can be seen just now. Looks like we're on for some proper snow action over the weekend though with it due to start falling tomorrow night and then continue well into next week. Weekend visitors - come prepared for snow and cold! --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 380cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 320cm Iwappara: 255cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 320cm Kandatsu Kogen: 320cm Maiko Snow Resort: 325cm (upper) 240cm (lower) Naeba: 260cm NASPA Ski Garden: 288cm Yuzawa Kogen: 300cm (Kogen) 250cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 210cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Thursday 29th January 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 974cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 37 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 415cm reported on 21 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 1st February 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 999cm Posted on Sunday 1st February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . That bit of blue sky and sun yesterday morning while I was writing the report quickly disappeared and we were left with a day of snow falling and moderate to sometimes quite strong winds. The Niigata forecast said we could expect up to 50cm of fresh snowfall overnight and indeed that is what Kagura is reporting (40-50cm) this morning but less so down here in town. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 20-30cm of snow, while there's 20cm of fresh outside my place here since my report yesterday. So it looks like one of those days when higher up Kagura and the Naeba area gets a fair bit more than we did in town - and I would say there have been less of those this season than usual. Still, 20-30cm of fresh sounds good to me so snow conditions should be good this morning everywhere. Not the friendliest of conditions this morning though... it's still snowing now and a look round the webcams shows pretty much white-out conditions in most places at the beginning of the day. It's not looking like it is going to give up anytime soon with the snow clouds due to still be over the region through tomorrow. Cold at around -3C as of 8am and a moderate wind likely during the day. Unfortunately the wind is preventing the Tashiro area of Kagura to open again this morning and it's limited at Kagura via Mitsumata as well. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 410cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 360cm Iwappara: 265cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 340cm Kandatsu Kogen: 340cm Maiko Snow Resort: 340cm (upper) 270cm (lower) Naeba: 260cm NASPA Ski Garden: 305cm Yuzawa Kogen: 320cm (Kogen) 260cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 225cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Sunday 1st February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 999cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 39 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 20cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 6th February 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 1051cm Posted on Friday 6th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Cloud did clear at times yesterday leaving us with periods of blue sky and sunshine, but the cloud was never far away and fairly quickly moving back in. It just doesn't seem to want to be clear for a day this season! This morning lots of cloud up above and we have had a bit of snowfall overnight. There's about 4cm on the top of my car and both Maiko Snow Resort and Kagura reporting 10cm. Some good fast conditions yesterday so a new layer and continued cold should keep things in decent condition. Snowfall is actually forecast for the day, but it's weak just at the moment. Looking to the upcoming weekend we are expecting some fine weather conditions tomorrow and perhaps the sun out, and slightly warmer conditions with a high of around +4C down at town level. From later on in the day on Sunday the next big delivery of snow is lining up with some expected moderate to heavy snow going into Monday. That should give everywhere a good decent refresh. Regular refreshes, that's what we want now. There's certainly no mid season lack of snow worries. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 430cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 350cm Iwappara: 260cm Joetsu Kokusai: 270cm Kagura: 340cm Kandatsu Kogen: 350cm Maiko Snow Resort: 360cm (upper) 280cm (lower) Naeba: 260cm NASPA Ski Garden: 340cm Yuzawa Kogen: 350cm (Kogen) 290cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 230cm --- Nighta in the area Nighta 'night skiing' - where some slopes are floodlit for skiing and snowboarding in the evening - is available at the following resorts in the area. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 2nd February 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 35cm Snowfall at base this season 1034cm Posted on Monday 2nd February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Another 20cm or so of snowfall during the day yesterday, and 15cm to move again this morning - so around 35cm fresh snow since my report yesterday once again. That takes us to over 10m of snowfall observed here at town level since the beginning of the season. Impressive! (Kagura only reporting 20cm this morning but I suspect that's just not including snow that fell yesterday. I can't make that number up though... so 20cm it is. Other confirmed number this morning is 20-30cm of fresh at Maiko). Was rather windy as well for parts of yesterday, and it looks like wind is still with us this morning with the Tashiro area of Kagura once again closed this morning and only part of the main Kagura area open. Once that area finally gets opened up again, there's going to be some amazing untouched conditions up there to enjoy. Tomorrow perhaps? It's good to see that Gala Yuzawa is able to keep open through stronger wind conditions these days as well. OK so back down here and it's moderate snowfall still with a moderate wind and limited visibility. Expecting the snowfall to get less later on in the day with cloud and possible snow showers at times tomorrow. Not a whole lot of clear weather forecast for the coming week - there looks like more of a chance of more snow on the way. General weather conditions might not be the best today, but there should be no complaints about snow conditions for those making it out! --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 420cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 370cm Iwappara: 290cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 340cm Kandatsu Kogen: 340cm Maiko Snow Resort: 370cm (upper) 300cm (lower) Naeba: 260cm NASPA Ski Garden: 365cm Yuzawa Kogen: 320cm (Kogen) 260cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Monday 2nd February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1034cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 40 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 55cm reported on 2 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 3rd February 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 1044cm Posted on Tuesday 3rd February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from the Yuzawa area where we still have snow clouds up above. It's not actually snowing just now, but light snow is expected during the day today. There's 10cm on the top of my car, fallen from the skies since yesterday day time and the snow walls around town are now once again looking refreshed and - high! Someone pointed this out yesterday... official snow depths for resorts have many with more than Kagura which we always expect to have the most. Whether lower down actually has had more or not is certainly open for question - especially when we remember that official snow depths at Kagura often don't budge even when they get 40cm for a few days in a row! Sometimes you feel certain resorts actually downplay the amount of snow. Having said that, and just an observation, but I feel there's more snow piled up on the side of the roads in the Shiozawa and Muikamachi area than there is in Yuzawa. Still huge amounts everywhere of course at the moment... OK so it's -2 degrees at the moment. Lots of fresh snow, should be excellent conditions everywhere right now. Forecasts disagree on what we have in store after tomorrow - clearer weather on Thursday, or rain? I know which I'd prefer. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 440cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 370cm Iwappara: 290cm Joetsu Kokusai: 230cm Kagura: 340cm Kandatsu Kogen: 360cm Maiko Snow Resort: 380cm (upper) 300cm (lower) Naeba: 260cm NASPA Ski Garden: 365cm Yuzawa Kogen: 320cm (Kogen) 260cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 230cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Tuesday 3rd February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1044cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 41 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 65cm reported on 3 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Those blue skies that started yesterday morning didn't last for long, with snow falling for much of the day - some clearings of clouds at times, but usually short-lived. Not much cm from it though, and about 5cm of fresh snow outside from overnight. The sun is out again this morning as I write this, with a mix of blue skies to the north and some thin cloud in places. Nice and bright. Difficult to read what will happen during the day today with a few different forecasts. Take your pick from sunny or cloudy with some snow showers at times! One thing that does seem certain is that today will be warmer with a high of around +5C forecast this afternoon. It wasn't that cold last night and now it's hovering around 0C. It's also National Foundation Day in Japan which is a national holiday so it'll be interesting to see how many folk come visiting for this mid week day off. Expect places to be busier than on a normal weekend. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Another rather warm day yesterday with lots of sun in the morning, though becoming increasingly overcast and hazy as the day progressed. Before I went to sleep last night I could hear some rain - how much that continued I don't know, but it is snowing lightly now and we are still expecting snow today and tomorrow at least. Hopefully it'll get going and be coming down harder than it is just now. As yet just around 2cm to report. Kagura is reporting 5cm as of 7:30am. According to most of the forecasts, we can expect potentially heavy snow and strong winds as well at times over the next two days. So hopefully some good things to report tomorrow morning for the start of the weekend. With Chinese New Year next week helping things along, the next week or two will probably be the peak of the season in terms of number of visitors from overseas. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Slightly over 30cm on the top of my car overnight and blue skies above us for first lifts... sounds almost perfect! Surprisingly we do have bright and sunny skies above right now - snow is forecast for the day and you can see the clouds to the north of Minamiuonuma... will they roll in as forecast or will we get to enjoy some clear conditions at least for a bit this morning? Yesterday we also had a few times when there were clearings in the clouds above, but snow moved on back in. Not a whole lot during the day though really, the snow that I report is pretty much all from overnight. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 40cm... with Kagura and Naeba both reporting 10-20cm. So it looks like we may have got more down here again. I don't know if it's really worth looking at the forecast with what's happening now, but it's snowfall for the day today (!) and into tomorrow, easing off in the morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Guess what... it ended up overcast and cloudy again yesterday! Another very busy day out there by the looks, and happily the rain waited until late on to start. Then it turned into snow. This morning at my place here in Minamiuonuma, there's 35cm of snow on the top of my car. Seems we generally got more than Yuzawa as my colleague has just called with his observation of 20cm. Maiko Snow Resort nearby is saying 20-30cm, as is Kagura higher up. So 20cm goes on the report (but there's definitely 35cm on my car!) Snow forecast all day today along with moderate wind, but all resorts are going to be open as normal. Kagura are not posting any wind-affected news just yet anyway. Snow forecast for tomorrow too with some forecasts giving us a bit of a break from it around Wednesday - before a return to snow late week. Limited visibility and colder than the weekend. Light snow on and off during the day yesterday, but not much in terms of new cm... 2cm actually here, and right now very light snow is lazily falling from the sky with the forecsst for the day being just cloudy conditions and more of the same tomorrow as well. It feels and looks like it might clear up and be quite bright today actually. Not a whole lot of snow forecast until Sunday really going into early next week. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 7th December 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 80cm Snowfall at base this season 95cm Posted on Sunday 7th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It has been a Snowtastic 24 hours here, a bit mad to be honest. We have been well and truly snowed on. The best measure I can give is that I wiped 30cm off the top of my car at 5pm last night. And this morning there's 50cm on the top there. No kidding. So that's a confirmed 80cm of snow since yesterday. It's still snowing and forecast to until this evening, so that will only be added to. We usually get some snow around now and it usually melts before the 'proper' snow arrives and sets in the for the season, but this feels 'proper'... it may well warm up a little in the coming week but I can't see this lot going. That means of course that it's very probably a really great base for the resorts around town. Locals seems to be in a bit of shock though. I think my Myoko friend mentioned it yesterday but as much preperation as people seem to do, there's always a bit of a mad dash panic when the first snow hits. And when it hits in this kind of style...! --- OK so let's look at resort news. This morning Kagura are curiously only reporting 50cm of fresh snow. Perhaps they don't want to frighten away people who don't like hearing about 'too much snow' (believe it or not, they exist!) As you might expect with all the new snow they are opening up more. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 6th December 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 15cm Posted on Saturday 6th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . This is a bit more like it! The morning rain yesterday turned into sleet and then in the afternoon it was snowing. It's still snowing now actually and outside SnowJapan HQ in Minamiuonuma we have probably around 10-15cm of snow on the ground. Not a massive amount for sure, but it's the first cm on the ground and a very welcome sight indeed. The forecast is for continued snow through the day today and tomorrow as well, so let's see it build up. Kagura were last night reporting 15cm in the Mitsumata car park and this morning reporting 20-40cm of fresh snow up there on their slopes. From today the Mitsumata area will be used as a 'connection' to Kagura. Which means no more shuttle bus needed. So here's the line up at Kagura this morning, the first four being 'lifts open to get you there' so to speak: - Mitsumata Ropeway - Mitsumata Number 1 Quad lift - Mitsumata Number 3 Romance pair lift - Kagura Gondola - Kagura Number 1 Quad (every day) - Kagura Number 1 Romance pair lift (holidays) I would imagine that with continued snowfall today, they will quite quickly be getting more terrain open up, (perhaps even today and probably tomorrow - just guessing there). The Tashiro Ropeway is now scheduled to be open from tomorrow, so no opening there this morning. There's no word yet from Iwappara and Joetsu Kokusai but surely there's not enough snow yet to open. They both planned to open today so will now be opening up as soon as they can. --- Ski resorts in Yuzawa town Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma City --- Resorts currently open: Kagura (Mitsumata Ropeway) --- Planned opening dates for resorts in Yuzawa Town and Minamiuonuma City (by date): Sunday 7th December: Kagura Tashiro As soon as there's enough snow to open: Iwappara Joetsu Kokusai Saturday 13th December: Maiko Snow Resort Naeba Friday 19th December: Ishiuchi Maruyama Muikamachi Ski Resort Yuzawa Nakazato Yuzawa Kogen Yuzawa Park Saturday 20th December: Chateau Shiozawa GALA Yuzawa Ipponsugi Kandatsu Kogen Ludens Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Wood Muimamachi Hakkaisan NASPA Ski Garden Yuzawa Kogen (Nunoba area) Tuesday 23rd December: Itsukamachi Thursday 25th December: Hakkaisanroku Saturday 27th December: Ishiuchi Hanaoka Late December Mt Granview Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Saturday 6th December 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 15cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 1 day Most snowfall observed in 1 day 15cm (6th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 15cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
