Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 381cm Weather overview Fine Wind Calm Temperature - Visibility Good Posted on Monday 28th January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba, and welcome to a new week. If you count Monday as the start of the week, of course. And a fine morning it seems it will be. Lots of white cloud around the mountains, but lots of blue sky up there as well and the sun shining down casting lots of shadows all around. Very dramatic. No new snow to report here at village level, and resorts not reporting anything other than a sprinkling up at Cortina. Temperatures dropped down to -10 degrees overnight and as of 9am it was still around -5 degrees. Hakuba 47 are reporting a temperature of -12C up top this morning, so it's a cold start to the day. Just a slight northerly wind. After all that snow we got a few days back, it seems that this week we are going to be enjoying clearer skies with just the chance of an occasional snow shower from time to time. Temperatures set to rise as the week goes on with Friday looking almost warm there on the forecast and bringing a chance of rain into Saturday. Not the best news for the coming weekend but we can just hope that changes by the time we get there. ------- Official snow depths and operations @ Monday 28th January 2013: Hakuba Goryu: No new snow reported from Hakuba Goryu this morning. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 381cm Weather overview Clear and sunny Wind Calm Temperature - Visibility Excellent Posted on Thursday 31st January 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Well todays report isn't going to be too difficult! No new snow to report. The sun is out. Blue skies all around. It's a stunning morning in Hakuba. A cold start to the day, it was -7 degrees when I got up and now 'warmed up' somewhat to around -5. A high of around +4 in the village is likely today. The forecast tells us to expect simular tomorrow but perhaps even warmer, and then still rain likely on Saturday. With freezing level forecast to be above 2000m, it's going to be touch and go if it might be raining right up to the top of the ski resorts as well. We can only hope that will not happen and wait to see. It does seem we are in for a run of milder conditions through into at least early in the week. Should be good groomers early this morning. And don't forget the camera. ------- Official snow depths and operations @ Thursday 31st January 2013: Hakuba Goryu: No snow reported up top from Hakuba Goryu this morning. • Hakuba Now: Wednesday 13th February 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 453cm Weather overview Cloud, light snow Wind Moderate Temperature - Visibility Varied Posted on Wednesday 13th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba and it's snowy news I bring this morning. Around 20cm or so of snow at village/base level this morning with resorts around Hakuba and Otari reporting up to 30cm on the slopes. Hearing reports of up to 40cm. Conditions on slopes should be excellent this morning. It's actually a relatively mild morning here with the temperature around 0 degrees at base at the moment. Usagidaira at 1400m is reporting a temperature of -7 degrees and a NW wind of about 3.5m/s. The wind has been affecting lifts early on. Seems some lifts on 47 affected. Over at Cortina the Number 4 and 5 lifts are closed today due to avalanche danger along with some of the popular courses over there. Snow is still falling on the mountain though lower down in the village there's even a few small areas of blue sky from time to time, though still mostly cloud cover. The forecast is for snow for most of the day in the region, followed by likely clearer conditions tomorrow morning. [I want to believe the '250cm' of new snow reported by Hakuba Goryu on upper slopes this morning, but I reckon it's more like 25cm. Having said that, 250cm of snow overnight is a scary prospect, if not somewhat exciting. Can you just imagine that. We have been known to post typos from time to time - I remember once Hakuba 47 was on 4700cm snow depth once a few years back acccoring to our report. We fixed that up of course as soon as about 20 people mailed us to let us know!] Back to serious hat... So lots of new snow and enough great conditions on the courses of the resorts to enjoy. With heightened avalanche riskes out of bounds it is highly recommended that people stay within the boundaries. Going outside is just asking for trouble. Nobody wants to hear about people being buried or injured on the slopes... Have fun but take care. ------- Official snow depths and operations @ Wednesday 13th February 2013 AM: Hakuba Goryu: 20cm on lower and 25cm on upper slopes reported by Hakuba Goryu. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 453cm Weather overview Cloud Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Good Posted on Thursday 14th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . No new snow being reported around the valley this morning. The windy and snowy conditions of yesterday are not with us this morning and all is calm once again in Hakuba. Visibility remained generally poor yesterday on the mountains though late afternoon some areas were treated with a short period of sunshine through the clouds. Very dramatic it was up on Happo, where I was enjoying the snow. It is an overcast cloudy start to the day here this morning but visibility is good and we can see the mountain range backdrop to the village. It's just all grey, or is that silver? Silver sounds more cool. The forecast is telling me that we might see some sun later on. Doesn't seem likely as things are now, but as we all know conditions can quickly change in these here mountains. Light snow possible overnight and then snow again Friday night, so looks like we are going to get a topup of conditions once again just before the weekend. It's a fairly mild feeling morning and actually we are into the positive numbers at the moment - just. Still keeping in the negatives higher up with Usagidaira reporting a temperature of around -5C now. ------- Official snow depths and operations @ Thursday 14th February 2013 AM: Hakuba Goryu: No new snow reported by Hakuba Goryu. • Hakuba Now: Saturday 23rd February 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 502cm Weather overview Cloud, variable Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Good Posted on Saturday 23rd February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Well I said we were expecting more snow overnight and we sure got it. Yesterday was mostly cloudy and as evening approached the clouds came down lower and it was snowing. The headline this morning belongs to Hakuba Cortina again with their up to 50cm of snow since yesterday. This morning Hakuba 47 is claiming up to 40cm of fresh snowfall on upper slopes and 20-30cm around base. Here in the village I'd put the number on around 20cm, perhaps more. Another of those days when it should just be really good and deep everywhere. Right now it is approx. -5 degrees C in the village and there's a light north easterly wind. Stronger winds higher up on the mountain with Usagidaira reporting a wind speed of around 7m/s. It's -9C up there now. Happo seems to be affected by upper mountain winds about Usagidaira this morning with the Gondola and top areas of the resort not opening up as yet. No particular details of other delays or non openings this morning but there's a chance of wind affected operations. For the latest check their official sites. There's lots of cloud around still but it almost feels like it's going to clear up and some blue sky up there amongst all the remaining cloud. The sun is making some brief sneaky appearances as well. The forecast has us down for snow showers today and through tomorrow though. Perhaps we could be in for a surprise clear-up. The new heavy snowfall brings with it increased avalanche risks. This recent heavy snowfall has put rapid load on the already weak upper snowpack. With the potential dangers this brings, it is highly advisable to stay out of unsupported backcountry and side country areas today as well as away from steep convex slopes. Staying out of the Alpine zone all together is highly recommended. There's tons of powder on the supported slopes and more than enough fun for everyone. Looks like nighta at Happo today has changed times. Going to be 6pm to 9pm as the resort will be out grooming between 5pm and 6pm for some nice nighta coudroy conditions. Once we get to Monday the skies will probably begin to clear and then it looks like we might see a run of a few days of clearer possibly sunny weather. Maybe a few bluebirds in there. Going to warm up a bit too. For now though, lots of fresh snow to enjoy. Going to be lots of people out there. Take care and have fun. ------- Official snow depths and operations @ Saturday 23rd February 2013 AM: Hakuba Goryu: Official snow depths: Alps daira - 315cm; Toomi - 150cm; Iimori - 130cm Hakuba 47: 20-30cm at base, 40cm up top new snowfall reported by Hakuba 47. • Hakuba Now: Monday 25th February 2013

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 547cm Weather overview Fine with cloud Wind Light to moderate Temperature - Visibility Generally good Posted on Monday 25th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Conditions were rather... blustery... out on the mountain yesterday. Happo was largely closed for lots of the day and other places were limited due to the windy conditions. I made my way up to the top of Goryu in the afternoon along with a few other hardy souls. It kept on snowing, at times lovely great big flakes. 20cm or so during the day yesterday and another 10cm to add to that by this morning. Snow conditions were excellent, weather and general visibility less so! This morning I can see much more and the sun is making an early morning appearance too. There's quite a bit of blue sky up there, with some cloud hanging around covering the mountain backdrop to Hakuba. A cold morning and about minus seven degrees now in the Hakuba village area. Snow showers possible according to the local forecast, but it feels like the clear up may be happening now. Tomorrow might be bluebird time. From tomorrow through until the end of the week we can expect some milder temperatures with another topup of snow currently forecast just before the weekend. Looks like most resort areas are open today, though it seems that the top lifts at Happo - including Skyline - remain closed, so the wind still causing some issues up there apparently. Cortina mostly open with the Number 4 lift moving and earlier on the Number 5 being checked. Conditions today should be excellent, and the same avalanche advice applies. There's an abundance of untouched powder out there on lift-serviced terrain. Hope you can get to enjoy it. ------- Official snow depths and operations @ Monday 25th February 2013 AM: Hakuba Goryu: Official snow depths: Alps daira - 330cm; Toomi - 165cm; Iimori - 150cm Hakuba 47: 30cm of new snowfall reported by Hakuba 47 since yesterday. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this season 527cm Weather overview Snow! Wind Moderate to strong Temperature - Visibility Not good Posted on Sunday 24th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Snow and more snow. And wind. It continues to snow. Since yesterday up to 50cm being reported (Cortina), with an average of up to 30cm around the village. It's certainly coming down this weekend. The trees are laden with snow and we feel right slap bang in the middle of winter. Let this feeling continue, especially as we are fast approaching March. Wind is affecting resorts. Happo is basically only lower lifts this morning as I write this, and the top lifts at Goryu are also on hold. Cortina has it's Number 4 and 5 lifts closed and related courses, due to avalanche risk, so all the goodies out there aren't accessible this morning. Hakuba 47 seems like it has most of it's area open this morning and so perhaps a good choice in terms of open terrain. It's -7 degrees at village level with a moderate wind here and it doesn't look like it's going to calm down much for the day today. Very dangerous avalanche conditions with all this new snow piling up. Please see yesterdays message and do take care. The storm should begin easing off tomorrow and if you are keen to see the sun, Tuesday might be a good idea to get up there. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Not much in terms of new snow to report from Hakuba this morning. Yesterday we got to see some sunlight shine down on the village in the afternoon. Lots of clouds remained around the mountains but quite a lot of blue sky above the valley before evening arrived. This morning there's still a lot of cloud around but sunny in the village at the moment. A bit like how the day ended yesterday really. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 549cm Weather overview Cloud, light snow showers Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Varied Posted on Wednesday 27th February 2013 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. So yesterday we had that lovely bluebird start to the day. By early afternoon some fine wispy clouds had started to form and it gradually became more overcast and by late afternoon the sun was being blocked by cloud and we had a lot of cloud cover. It snowed a bit overnight with a few cm at village level and resorts in Hakuba and Otari reporting up to 10cm of fresh snow on the slopes this morning. This morning we start off cloudy and overcast, with some light snowing in some areas early on, and a current temperature of around 0 degrees. A high of around +5 is forecast today for Hakuba and so it's going to feel mild especially after the cold of the last week or so. Not much of a wind this morning at all. We are told to expect the skies to clear up as the day progresses today. Milder conditions and clearer skies are forecast over the next few days and especially on Friday when rain is looking probably unfortunately. Temps forecast to drop soon after that warm though with snow likely overnight into Saturday. Hopefully any damage can be limited. ------- Official snow depths and operations @ Wednesday 27th February 2013 AM: Hakuba Goryu: 5-10cm of new snowfall reported by Hakuba Goryu since yesterday. • Hakuba Now: Thursday 13th December 2012

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 149cm Weather overview Sun with some cloud Wind No wind Temperature - Visibility Very good Posted on Thursday 13th December 2012 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It is a very lovely, clear and crisp morning in Hakuba early on today. Earlier on it was more cloudy but over the last few hours the clouds have been moving on and nice blue skies are opening up over Hakuba. Perhaps the clouds hanging over the mountains at the time of writing will move on as well as the morning progresses. It's a cold start to the morning anyway, currently around -4 degrees with no wind. Only a dusting of fresh snow to report around the village but resorts are reporting 10cm or so of fresh this morning. The previous blizzard has given the resorts unbelievable conditions to open up more runs and enjoy skiing and snowboarding all week. The outlook for the next few days is some cloud with the sunshine brightening up the valley until tomorrow. So, we are due for a drier period over the next few days and into next week. Warmer too, especially around Saturday when rain is expected to be falling, even higher up on the mountains. Hopefully that will be shortlived but this time it doesn't seem to be followed by snow. With the recent blizzard conditions though conditions out there today and tomorrow should be very good. Things are still quiet as well, so a good time to be here. From today, all of the official courses at Hakuba 47 are going to be open and at connecting Hakuba Goryu all of the Toomi area is now open. The Iimori area of Goryu will be opening up from Saturday. More of Happo-one opened yesterday with the Risen quad lift moving and that Riesen Slalom course stretch of the resort on the left side opening up. You can also now ski and board back down to the Gondola base station at Happo-one. Things are opening up! ------- Official snow depths and operations @ Thursday 13th December 2012 AM: Hakuba Goryu: Goryu reported 10cm of new snow since yesterday on upper slopes, a few cm lower down. • Hakuba Now: Wednesday 12th December 2012

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 147cm Weather overview Cloud, snow Wind No wind Temperature - Visibility Varied Posted on Wednesday 12th December 2012 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . There's not a whole lot of new snow to report this morning since yesterday and the heavy snowfall that we have been experiencing since the weekend seems to have eased off now. We did well out of it though and it has really changed things just in those few days. This morning it is a little warmer and hardly any wind at all but light snow is likely to be falling throughout the day. The calmer conditions will likely be giving the resorts a bit of time and space to sort things out and hopefully prepare for more areas to open up. On that subject... The headline for today I suppose is that Hakuba 47 have said that from tomorrow (Thursday), all of their runs will be open. As if it's peak season! Nice. For Thursday and Friday, Happo-one plan to have the following lifts operating - Gondola, Alpen Quad, Kurobishi No2 quad, Panorama Pair, Happo Riesen quad. Hakuba Iwatake plans to open for the season on Saturday and should have no problem doing so. Looking at the latest forecast, we can expect to see the sun tomorrow shining over the valley and it does look like we are going to enter a drier stretch into next week. I'll also mention the fact that warmer temperatures and rain are probable on Saturday, in the hope that such things might be avoided! • Hakuba Now: Friday 21st December 2012

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 159cm Weather overview Cloud Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Fair Posted on Friday 21st December 2012 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. It's a cloudy start to the day and a few cm, up to 5cm or so, around the village with resorts report up to 20cm of snow on upper slopes since yesterday. The temperature is currently -3C with that set to rise to around +3C later on in the afternoon. The forecast is for cloud today. Good visibility on the lower slopes but higher areas are covered in cloud. Tomorrow will be quite mild with a chance of light rain in the daytime though it should be snowing on the mountains. Sunday is when the cold front begins to move in and bring with it the snow we are hoping for, still looking on for a good dump of snow Sunday into Monday. While lots of area is open, we could really do with another good delivery of snow with less than perfect conditions. It was pretty icy out there yesterday, though the new snow overnight last night should improve things. I'd head up high if I were going out today. More lifts at Happo-one will be operating from today (see below) including Skyline, with all areas planned to be open as soon as tomorrow. From tomorrow Happo-one also plan to have the Shirakaba 1 and 2 pair lifts, as well as the Usagidaira pair lift and Central pair lifts operating. The latter two are open on Saturdays, public holidays and over the New Year period). This was mentioned last season - the area located around the top Grat Quad lift at Happo-one is designated as National Parklands. Because of that the resort is only able to open that lift and course when there is enough snow to do so, to maintain and protect the natural environment. They are ready to get that open tomorrow, though it's going to depend on the snow which at the moment seems to be hovering around the 150cm number needed. Lets hope they can and I will let you know tomorrow. ------- Official snow depths and operations @ Friday 21st December 2012 AM: Please note that resort lift operations are subject to change at any time. Hakuba Goryu: 20cm of new snow up top, 5cm on lower slopes this morning. Most lifts now operating. All main areas and courses at Hakuba Goryu are now open. Nighta at Goryu open from Saturday. Official snow depths: Alps daira - 175cm; Toomi - 90cm; Iimori - 35cm Hakuba 47: 13cm of new snow reported by Hakuba 47 this morning. All runs at Hakuba 47 are now open. All lifts apart from Line D operating. Official snow depth: Upper - 135cm Lower - 45cm Happo-one: Ski lifts/courses: Lifts operating - Gondola, Alpen quad, Kurobishi No2 quad, Kokusai No3 pair, Sakka Kitaone quad, Sakka 2 pair, Kitaone triple, Panorama, Happo Riesen quad, Nakiyama No3 triple, Skyline 2 pair.
