The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. And there's some very good news this morning with a lot of fresh snow to report. Check out the fresh snow reported by the resort - 40-46cm across the mountain. I'm measuring just over 35. Now that's what we like! It's a cold start to the morning but clearer skies are forecast for later on. So put on those layers and get up there; it should be a really great day. Tomorrow too, with sun forecast for the day. Hope you can get to enjoy it. The main part of the 'Dosojin Fire Festival' takes place tomorrow, Monday 15th. More details on the festival itself are posted below. One important thing though, and I can't say it much better than the official resort website; so let me just post what they say: "A reminder that the Fire Festival is a privilege and an amazing experience to witness but visitors must remember to be respectful of the local people and their traditions. Specifically, only receive alcohol if you are offered it and avoid pestering the town members given that it is theirs to enjoy. The people in the village are very generous and want to make it a safe and incredible experience. Don't drink too much and prepare for a cold night, as there is a good amount of standing around." There have been some cases in the past of visitors getting somewhat over-enthusiastic and causing some problems. Let's all take a step back, respect the locals, respect the event and enjoy the spectacle. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Brrrr, it was really cold out there and snowing lightly when I went out to measure the 5cm of fresh snow this morning. (Toast update: came back in and had some extra toast). So yes, just 5cm to report today - sure, not enough to cover tracks from a busy day on the slopes yesterday, but good quality snow and certainly better than none and there should be a little more in higher areas. There's not much of a wind this morning so if you get wrapped up it should be a nice morning out. If the forecasts are correct, we can expect clearer skies during the day today and then much milder conditions tomorrow with the chance of some snowfall (very probably not the quality of snow we have this morning). --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6.00am: -6°, trace new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m : -9°, 5cm new snow, calm, minor snow drift development from the west. Annupuri 1150m: -11°, light winds, 5cm new snow. Hirafu 1250m: -13°, 5cm new snow, calm. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NW6m/s. Kamui Cape: N8m/s,1025hPa, wave 1.0m. The area is covered by a high pressure system and the mountains and seas are calm. There is no significant snow clouds over the Sea of Japan with little snowfall and snowdrift development in the last 12 hours. Yesterdays tracks can still be seen with less than 10cm new snow. From observation general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Listen to the patrols advice before going out of bounds. Do not duck the ropes. Niseko Rules exist to make riding out of bounds safer. There have been increasing numbers of people who don't know the rules ducking ropes and getting lost. Accommodation providers and ticket counters in the area need make everyone aware of Niseko Rules. Do not enter Strictly Off Limits areas Haru no Taki and YunoSawa looking for fresh snow. If you get caught you will be banned from the all Niseko resorts. Although yesterdays tracks remain, its cold and snow on and off the runs is good. Beware going fast and hitting trees, falling into cracks. Weather changes quickly in the mountains. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another day of a lot of places around us getting crazy heavy snow, and us getting not all that much. We got 14cm up to this morning, after a really cold night that if nothing else probably kept the snow up high on the mountain in good condition. It's snowing now high up on Mt. Myoko, sunny to the south and east, and dark again out towards the ocean. Could use some more snow before we get another warm wave around Wednesday; the one good news was that the predicted freezing line (the line of 0°C) has come down from 2500 meters to 2050. Still strange for January, but hopefully it will come down even more (don’t need rain!). A lot of the temperatures below are from early in the day; it did go down to about -10°C at base level last night. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I bring happy news of some lovely fresh snow on the ground here at base. I measured 18cm of very nice quality snow. Hurray! And with up to 30cm being reported higher up, conditions should be excellent this morning. And that sounds jolly good to me. Expect more than a few people thinking the same and hitting the slopes early on. The sun is out as well at the moment. The winds are calm and it is good and cold. The sunny conditions might not last the day but tomorrow is expected to be sunny from the start all the way through. It is after all, Sunday. So it would seem appropriate. After that, the next decent snow should be around Monday. That is all from me this morning and I wish you a happy and safe Saturday. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -10℃, 20cm snowfall, calm. Moiwa 800m -10℃, SW breeze, 30cm snowfall. Annupuri 1150m: -13℃, W5m/s, 20cm snowfall. Hirafu 1250m: -13℃, NW8m/s, 30cm snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape WSW5m/s, Kamui cape W5m/s, 1010hPa, 1.1m waves. The isobars are spread out and the weather is calm on the ocean and the mountains. A light surface hoar has formed due to radiative cooling. The new snow is light, typical snow crystals not affected by the wind. The general avalanche risk is low today. Peak gates will open, please seek for ski patrol’s advice before stepping out of bounds. A thin avalanche from Jan 13th layer may occur in steep slopes. Carefully ride one by one, stay away from valley bottoms or potential avalanche path when resting. Wearing a helmet and beacon is not mandatory but is heavily recommended. Beacons could save your and other’s lives. Outside the boundaries is not the resort anymore, everyone is responsible of their own actions, better be prudent. Niseko is setting official Rules in order to protect the safety and freedom of out of bounds riding. Please respect the Niseko Rules. It is partly cloudy but we should see the sun through the day, but probably not the pure blue skies like yesterday. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . I'm still a bit confused with what the weather is delivering at the moment. Not more than 30 minutes up the road and they were getting some proper snowfall yesterday, while we were getting some sun in the afternoon. The resort yesterday did update their reporting saying there was 8-10cm up top (and by 12 noon it appears they added 6-7cm), though I wasn't out on the slopes myself to go check that out. They are not reporting any more snow this morning, though it is snowing. As you can see on the image below there's a dusting of snow on the top of Nasuki's head (and he/she looks happy). I'm going to award the report 1cm as encouragement. All curious stuff. Snow is on the forecast for today and later tomorrow. Come on!! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I enjoyed a really fun day yesterday, especially in the morning with the blue skies and sunshine. Got to cover all four of the ski areas; didn't want to finish. It sounded a little windy overnight but by now the wind has calmed and I have another 9cm of fresh snow to report from here near Hirafu base. There are regular snow showers still there on the forecast into early next week so hopefully we'll be getting regular top-ups to fill in the tracks. It's snowing as this post goes live and visibility is currently looking somewhat limited on the slopes. Not quite as cold as yesterday was but still need those layers. Take care! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -5℃, 10cm snowfall and snowdrifts development. Moiwa 800m: 3am NW15.5m/s, 6am NE5m/s, -7.8℃. Annupuri 1150m: -7℃, NE10m/s, 15cm snowfall with snowdrifts. Hirafu 1250m: -9℃, snowdrifts developed pre-dawn, 10cm snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape NE10m/s, Kamui cape E5m/s, 1010hPa, 1.8m waves. A small low-pressure system passed overnight, generating NE gusts and making snowdrifts develop. Newly formed cornices above 800m elevation cracked at 60cm thickness during this morning’s pressure test. The wind settled down around 5am and the snowpack is starting to stabilize, however avalanche risk will remain considerable in leeward slopes above 1000m with heavy snowdrift deposit throughout the morning. All gates are scheduled to open; however the snow condition is different from yesterday’s. Avoid knolls and cornices and use caution. Do not traverse across steep slopes and stay away from valley bottoms. This information is issued for protecting all resort users’ safety and freedom to ride of out bounds. Wearing helmets and avalanche beacons is not mandatory, but strongly recommended. The slopes have been reset and are in good shape. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Madarao. Complicated weather at the moment it would seem and I have 7cm to report since yesterday. Better than none but not as much as I was hoping for. It has started snowing again this morning so hopefully there will be more today and over the next few days. The Powder Wave I, River Line and Crystal Bowl tree run areas won't be open today due to the current conditions. Hopefully they will get to re-open again with a good refresh. The Madarao Fire Festival is on Saturday. Expect (controlled!) fire, torch lit skiing display, food, drink and fireworks. Happily I am also able to report 6cm of snow but for the moment the clouds have cleared and the sun is out. It's one of those periods when places in western Japan get snow and we don't get much. There's probably a name for that (one more technical than 'odd'!) but I don't know it. Still, snow on and off is there on the forecasts over the next few days so perhaps things will keep on changing with speed. All very interesting. (Though heavy snowfall is more interesting!). It’s getting a little nicer on the snow surface; some people were reporting great powder on top of the icy remains of the rain, especially around Suginohara, and not too high up. The trees are white again, and it looks like there was more than the 7 cm that we got with a poke of the stick in the study plot this morning. Light snow began to fall again around 7am, so hopefully the reset will continue. The ski areas should be really good, though! Nice and cold again, with a little fresh continuing to season the slopes...
