The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Greetings. There was some light snow overnight, nothing major, and it seems to be clearing up gradually and getting brighter. We're on for some sun I think. It appears that the only area of Shiga Kogen not at least part open now is Hasuike and their lift plans to be open from Saturday. Terakoya open from today. Not all lifts are running yet, but it's getting that most areas are now skiable. From now in the list I will only mention the larger areas. As regular readers will know, the snow depth numbers in Shiga Kogen don't really move much - even after some heavy snow. So pinches of salt please, but I'd feel odd not having at least some of them in the report. The most important number is the ongoing fresh snow. And by the way we should be getting quite a lot of that at the weekend. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here There's more snowfall to report again this morning. With some strong wind it is one of those days when the amount of snow to be seen in different places will vary, but I have measured 16cm as of 8am since my report yesterday. It looks like wind might be affecting some lifts at the start of the day as well, but hopefully that won't last long and they will be able to get going. Consistent snow on the forecasts along with some nice cold conditions. It's looking good for the last week of the year for snow, and Santa will certainly be pleased. As of 8:30am the Annupuri Gondola and Number 1 lift at Hanazono are on hold with a few more lifts moving a bit slower than usual. ----- Someone shouted at me because the numbers in my list below apparently 'don't add up'. I have mentioned this a few times before, but the numbers may well sometimes seem a bit odd. 20cm of fresh snowfall reported by a ski area does not automatically mean that the official snow depth will rise by 20cm. It doesn't work like that. There may be fresh snow overnight but the snow depth number might actually decrease. I spend my time each day carefully trying to bring the best information that I can. All of the numbers apart from my observed snowfall number are numbers that ski areas put out there themselves. I check this information manually and I relay it to you in this report. I try not to make any mistakes, but I'll admit to any if I do. If you choose to not believe my reports, well, there's really nothing I can do about that. (And I suggest you just don't read them). Someone also shouted at me for 'not mentioning covid'. I'm not sure what you want me to say. It sucks, right? And if you read all of my reports you will know that I will mentioned it from time to time when it seems appropriate, but I do not want to dwell on it. For obvious reasons. This is a snow report, not a covid/health report. Not mentioning it all the time does not mean that I totally do not feel for everyone who is affected directly or indirectly; both potential visitors and businesses. Of course I do. Regardless of these complaints about my daily efforts, I will continue regardless. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -7°C, 20cm snow in 12h, blizzard. Moiwa700m: -9°C, blizzard, 25cm new snow. Annupuri 1000m: -11°C, blizzard, poor visibility, snow drifts are developing, 30cm new snow. Coastal data Benkei cape: NW 16m/s, Kamui cape: WNW 13m/s, 1008 hPa, 2.6m waves. High waves in the Japan sea under the wintery pressure distribution. 20m/s snow storm is blowing above 1200m elevation Niseko mountain range, and snowdrifts are rapidly developing on the leeward side of the ridge and the avalanche risk is high. Snowdrifts are heavily accumulating also in the treeruns under 1000m elevation. Be careful even if there are trees. Snow quickly piled up under strong wind turns into very unstable slabs, can collapse instantly and easily trigger surface slab avalanches. Better be very cautious today. Snow will stabilize once the snowstorm calms down. Most of the accidents occur in a snowstorm. Be careful of frostbites. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . There has been 11cm of new snow overnight and it is still snowing very lightly at the moment. The snow is forecast to stop after midday and the cloud should breakup. It is -6c heading for a high temperature of -3c. Cloud is very low and enveloping the base area, so visibility will be varied. With all this new snow the resort must be getting closer to opening up more terrain, so we are looking for good news on this front in the next few days. Kitanomine Zone closed. Furano Zone open. Rain late last night has now turned to snow; the temperature is going down and the snow is starting to build up again (not much yet, but the day has just started). Good timing, too; the conditions are great on the hill for skiing, but we could see a few spots where the grass was poking out or a little dirt was streaking the surface (again, no complaints for any skiing before Christmas!). Yesterday we had rain, turning into sleet, turning into snow. And we have snow on the forecast for today, though right now there is even a bit of sun. Mostly cloudy though. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have just measured another 15cm of snow since my last report, with steady snow yesterday and a bit more overnight. I'm pleased to say that it is top quality stuff too. This morning depending on which way you look you'll see different things. Cloud or clearer some perhaps unexpected blue sky even. That probably won't last long as we are still told to expect steady incoming snowfall. The clearer skies above the mountain should make for some fine early morning turns though. There's not much of a wind at all this morning, which is always good to be able to say. From today the Hanazono Gondola will be open until 7:00pm for night skiing. The other lifts at Hanazono close at 3:00pm. The Dynamic course now open at Annupuri. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -2℃, 10cm snow in 12h. Moiwa700m: -3℃, calm, 15cm new snow. Annupuri1000m: -6℃, calm, 15cm new snow. Coastal data Benkei cape: NNE3m/s, Kamui cape: calm, 1006 hPa, 0.9m waves. Mountain weather data n/a. Calm morning with light snowfall under 1000m elevation as the low pressure band moved away. Looking at the data, snowfall transition and observation, the general avalanche risk in the Niseko mountain range under 1100m elevation is low. The snowpack around 1000m elevation is still thin and out of bounds riding is yet to open. The wind remained strong above 1300m until this morning and made snowdrifts develop in the leeward slopes. 60cm thick surface slab avalanche occurrence should be considered in those slopes. Triggered by Dec 18th layer made of temperature difference. Caution is required in wide open steep slopes of Mt Yotei and/or Chisenupuri, knolls and gullies’ sidewalls. The snowpack is growing slowly and the snow in the treeruns under 800m is good. Beware of the creeks as they are not fully buried yet. The river water is literally ice-cold. Beware also of tree-stumps. There is high cloud stretching through the valley, but the resort has a nice big break of blue sky above at the moment. Snow is expected to start falling from around 1pm. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's really snowing very nicely as I sit here writing this report. The kind of snow that sees those cm building up. People who are looking for some clear blue skies are going to be disappointed over the next week with consistent snow lined up on the forecast. It doesn't feel windy out there so it should be a very fine morning. Good news from Hirafu where only five official runs remain closed; all others now open. Out of bounds areas and gates are not yet open. As I am about to post the report at 8:30am the slick 6-person base lift at Hanazono appears to be on hold. Not sure why. That thing looks slick even when it's on hold. Though I'd prefer it were moving. ;) ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Base: -7℃, 12cm snowfall in the last 12hrs. Moiwa700m: -7℃, light WNW wind, good visibility. Annupuri 1000m: -8℃, 20cm new snow, light WNW wind. Benkei Cape: NW13m/s, Kamui cape: WSW12m/s, pressure 1011hPa, wave 1.2m. Other mountain Data n/a. 15-20cm of new snow, without wind, has fallen overnight. Snowdrifts development is small and general avalanche risk is low. The gates are not ready yet and the out of bounds areas are still closed. This information and the Niseko Rules are implemented for accident prevention. Since this mountain is not a wild untouched mountain, but a ski resort, it is necessary to set some kind of rule to avoid accidents that can happen too easily. The Niseko Rules have been implemented out of necessity from past repeated tragic accidents. They are not Rules to hold back the freedom of skiers/snowboarders. Ski resorts are here for all levels of snow enthusiasts. One track under the boundary rope could lead many others to follow it, and eventually trigger an accident. We strongly ask all resort visitors to respect the Niseko Rules. The inbounds snow condition is fantastic today.
