There's those with the deep blue sky and stunning mountains (preferably following overnight snow). But even better than those are the mornings with a lot of fresh snowfall. And today is one of those. We did get some blue sky and sun at times yesterday afternoon. It was snowing by the evening and this morning we have some big numbers to report. For once Cortina does not 'win', reporting just 20cm. In contrast Happo-one is reporting up to 37cm and Hakuba 47 are boasting of 'over 50cm' on their upper areas. Hakuba Goryu, next door, are reporting 40cm. And I can post 32cm for my base snowfall report. Excellent. It is always exciting to be able to report good numbers. It's even more exciting to get out there and play in it. :) (And of course I totally don't say that to tease those of you who are sadly not able to be here right now. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good news: it's snowing heavily as of 8:30am. Less great news: Pesky wind has been the headline since yesterday and they are going to be causing lift disruption at the start of the day today. At 8:30am only the bottom lift at Annupuri is moving and only the gondola at Hanazono is operating. The Niseko Village gondola is on hold as are all of the top lifts. That situation might well change any time, of course. Looks like the Morino Chair at Village is taking over some duties this morning. It's one of those days when sitting it out and waiting for things to calm down will probably be the choice for many. (Not us gnarly folk, of course). For those braving the conditions, special care advised today. Visibility is limited and I imagine there's going to be snowdrift and all sorts of things to deal with. Hopefully tomorrow should be calmer and there'll be more to see. A cold one too, so be sure to have those layers. Or, alternatively, sit in front of a fire and get all toast(y)! ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -9℃, stormy and bad visibility, 20cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: Stormy, heavy cornice and snowdrift developments. Annupuri1100m: -14℃, heavy cornice and snowdrift developments, fracturing at 100cm. Hirafu peak ridge: -17℃, stormy, no visibility. Coastal data Benkei cape NW22m/s, Kamui cape WSW19m/s, 1009hPa, 3.4m waves. The strong wintry pressure distribution pattern is delivering a heavy snowstorm. Cornices and snowdrifts are largely developing. Snowdrifts are firm and forming slabs that can easily slide from yesterday’s snowfall layer. 100cm thick slabs are likely to slide in some places. Impact stimulation runs instantly throughout the slab. Avalanche risk is high in all elevations today. It is best to stay inbounds. Many of the past avalanche accidents in Niseko happened while riding out of bounds during bad weather. Avalanches are natural occurrences, accidents only happen if a person is present where it happens. Do not duck ropes. Roads are also treacherous today, please drive carefully. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . We gained a bit more snow but most of it yesterday. Tonight should see another good fall. It started off sunny today and, as a result, the tour buses poured in and by 10am there was an hour long queue at the Zao Ropeway to see the juhyo (snowy tree forest/snow monsters). It is now cloudy but without the fog. Other parts of the resort are moving well. It has been a very busy few days, certainly different from last year which tallies with reports on the rest of the country. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The strong winds overnight have eased off and are now light to moderate in the ski village. There is 21cm of new snow around base level with quite a bit of body to it, so this will definitely help build up the base and cover some of the thinner patches on the Kitanomine side. Snow is falling moderately and is forecast to continue through the day. The resort has advised regular lift operations and times may change today due to wind and snow. Another 30cm of it on the ground. There's limited visibility out there this morning and a westerly blowy wind blowing the snow around. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It didn't take too long for the skies to start clouding over yesterday after that beautiful start and it was a much greyer feel by the afternoon. Those clouds did start to deliver some fresh snow though and this morning there's generally 15-20cm or so being reported by the ski areas on the mountain. There's a decent layer on the ground around base areas too. So a decent refresh and snow due tonight through tomorrow too. Sounds good. Snow was really great yesterday morning. :) Curious weather this morning. It's not as cold as yesterday. There's a lot of cloud about, some rather dark grey too, but brighter in some areas too. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It has started to snow again and is snowing very nicely as I write this and it will probably be continuing, perhaps on and off at times, through until Tuesday. It doesn't feel as cold this morning, yesterday really was cold!, but it's still down there well below zero. Interesting to see the numbers in the Avalanche Report this morning, bit different from mine and the official numbers - ski areas generally reporting 10-20cm. (But that's ok, of course, as they are trusted folk and all can be 'correct'). Perhaps the stronger winds yesterday have some bearing on that. Anyways, should be a good day and I don't think wind should be an issue. I'll see you tomorrow. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base: -6℃, 40cm new snow in the last 24hrs, strong winds and snow stopped overnight. Moiwa 800m: -8℃, NNW5m/s, major cornice and snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -8℃,WNW5m/s, increased snowpack, cornice and snowdrift development. Hirafu: n/a. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: WNW10m/s. Kamui Cape: SW13m/s, 1016hPa, wave 1.6m. The atmospheric pressure gradient is relaxing and the mountains are calm for the moment. There has been 40-50cm of new snowfall in the last 24hrs. Above the treeline there is major cornice and snow drift development, up to 150cm in some locations. From observation and data, there is high avalanche risk in Moiwa Mikaeri Bowl, Annupuri Osawa cornice slope, Kozan no Sawa and the entire Higashi One area. Hirafu Gate 3 is expected to be open today from 11.30am to 1.00pm. Gate 2 opening yet to be decided. Expect large surface avalanches in Annupuri Osawa, Kozan no Sawa and Higashi One cornice slopes. Even if the gates are open do not venture into these areas. All out of bounds riders are obligated to follow Niseko Rules, as are the ski resorts obligated to balance their responsibility to you for a safe experience at their resort and your freedom to ride. Do you have a beacon? Please listen to the partols advice and make sure you use gates to go out of bounds. Let's hope for no accidents. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . An early report today. As of 7am there is cloud around the region but clearer skies above the mountain. It feels vert cold outside and it is surely going to turn into a very fine morning and a nearly perfect day to be out there on the mountain. It looks like all courses apart from Grand Prix and Kamoshika are now available. The snow did ease off yesterday with just a little being reported and observed since my last post. More snow might be back tonight and then Tuesday is looking good for another decent fresh layer. Some clearer weather and sun (as long as it remains cold) and regular fresh snow sounds like a very good pattern to keep over the next few months. Fresh snowfall recorded by the ski area (total since yesterday morning): - Yamabiko (1615m): 1cm - Uenotaira (1407m): 4cm - Hikage (660m): 2cm - Nagasaka (616m): 2cm - Karasawa (563m): 0cm Official snow depth numbers (reported by the ski area): - Yamabiko (1615m): 260cm - Uenotaira (1407m): 225cm - Hikage (660m): 185cm - Nagasaka (616m): 175cm - Karasawa (563m): 140cm All courses apart from the following plan to be open: - Grand Prix - Kamoshika Planned operating lifts: - Most lifts are now scheduled to be open, subject to weather conditions. - The top Yamabiko A-D courses close at 3:20pm until 27th March (at 3:10pm after that). - Skyline course closes at 4:10pm. - The Utopia and Challenge pair lifts are normally rested on weekdays. - The Nagasaka quad lift is open for night skiing 1st Jan, 8th-9th Jan, 11th-12th Feb (subject to change!)
