  • Myoko Now: Wednesday 14th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 16cm Posted on Wednesday 14th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The national forecast is for heavy snow all over, and, while there's not that much on the ground yet, the overnight rain has turned to a steadily-falling-if-not-super-heavy snowfall. Pretty small flakes, not the big accumulated clumps that usually accompany heavy snow. My favorite weather forecasting tool, though, does point to heavier snow later in the day. In the morning, the winds seem to be moving across the coastline. A few years ago, a similar wind movement basically shut down Joetsu City, just to our north. Winter is exciting, isn't it? The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Not that much snow yesterday and it was definitely on the wet side with the relatively mild temps. I'm not an expert, but I believe that is actually a good thing for the base of snow. It's feeling colder this morning, and it is snowing again (and less wet). No ski area operations changes to report. If we get some decent snow over the next few days, I'm expecting more to be open by the weekend. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 173cm Posted on Monday 12th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have just measured another 9cm of snow since yesterday morning. It was lovely out there too. It's still cloudy, but there is blue sky and hints of sun too. So it should be a great morning on the mountain. And while I might not have any/much snow to report tomorrow morning, due to be relatively mild, there's potentially heavy snow coming with temps due to take a big dip by Wednesday. A few more courses are now open at Hirafu, and the Dynamic course is also open at Annupuri. (The list below is updated every morning). So, little by little, the mountain is gradually opening up. The course link between Hirafu and Hanazono is open (until 3:00pm) but note that the connection between Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Village is not yet available. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -5℃, calm, 15cm snowfall in 12h. Moiwa 600m: -6℃, calm, 15cm snowfall in 12h. Mountain weather stations not installed. Hirafu patrol report: 10cm snowfall in 12h, good visibility. Coastal data: Benkei cape calm, Kamui cape N3m/s, 1023hPa, 1.1m waves. The Japanese Sea and the mountain range is calm under the predominant high-pressure system. The snowpack at 800m Higashi-One ridge has reached 130cm and weak layers are likely to let go in slopes steeper than 35 degrees, please be cautious. The overall avalanche risk is low and the snowpack is still shallow. Tree stumps, bushes and other obstacles are lurking underneath the surface. The snow quality is awesome. The temperature above 1000m stays below -8℃, layer up with warm clothes. Gates are not open yet, please stay inbounds for now. The mountain weather can quickly change, always stay cautious. --------------- Individual ski area information for Monday 12th December 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. • Niseko Now: Sunday 11th December 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 164cm Posted on Sunday 11th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I made a few updates to my original morning report yesterday. Some big flakes were falling yesterday at one point, and then just after posting that the snow stopped and it and got brighter, so somewhat changeable weather conditions. After doing these reports for so long, I should probably know better. I was just excited... This morning I have another 9cm of fresh snowfall to report. It is generally overcast with light snow falling in places. The Silver course is open at Annupuri this morning, as is their kid's sledging course. We might get some sun tomorrow, but from Tuesday onwards, it's snow and then some more snow. Hopefully, the wind won't get too pesky. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -3℃, 5cm snow overnight, light winds. Moiwa 500m: -4℃, light winds, 5cm snow overnight, no snowdrift development. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW10m/s, Kamui cape NW8m/s, 1015hPa, 1.2m waves. The winter type weather pressure system continues with some light snowfall. Above 800m the westerly wind and snow has periodically been intensifying, however cornice and snowdrift development has been slow. From data and observation the general avalanche risk is low. Expect intermittent snowfall as the light coastal cloud cover is tending to form snow clouds over the mountains. Conditions on the groomers is getting better, but it is still a bit soft underneath. Note that although 120cm of snow has accumulated on the Goshiki Mikaeri route, this is not enough snow yet. In the mountains be cautious and make smart decisions. Have a good Sunday and enjoy the snow. --------------- Individual ski area information for Sunday 11th December 2022 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources.
