The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa, and I have some very good news this morning. We have enjoyed a very good delivery of snowfall overnight. This morning the ski area is reporting 45-50cm of fresh snowfall across the mountain. Add on a few cm from yesterday, and you get a total of 47-55cm since yesterday morning. And I have measured 48cm of new snow down by base. Excellent. That sounds more like what we expect in Nozawa, doesn't it? :) I would expect this snowfall to allow more of the mountain to open up, but I don't have any specific news on that just yet other than the opening of Hikage and Rinkan. So some of the info below might be out of day when you read it. Now, if the season can settle into a regular delivery of snow, we will all be very pleased. Short-term, expect clearer skies and some sun tomorrow. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. And what a morning it is. This is pretty amazing. Some places on Honshu are known for their 'mad-snow dumpage' at times. Up here, we are used to perhaps less dramatic numbers with more consistency (my opinion, don't shout). But, this morning, I have a Niseko-tastic 62cm of snowfall to report. Off-hand, I can't remember posting that much in any one report before. (Let's checking). It is still snowing, lightly in places and more heavily in others. Visibility also looks quite varied. For example, poor over at Moiwa, but fairly ok at Hanazono. The very heavy snowfall is affecting ski area operations at the normal start of the day. At 8:30am, quite a few lifts are not opening on schedule. I would expect lifts to open up as the ski areas deal with all the new snow. It is a good problem to have. I think I'm going to have some celebratory toast and let things gradually open up before going out. (Funny, on the Niseko United website, Hirafu is reporting 70cm of snowfall at top and, er, 0cm at base. Niseko Village are reporting 0cm at both base and summit). (Actually, not funny). Oh, by the way, I might not be able to post a report early morning tomorrow. It will probably be later than usual. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 7am: -5C, 60cm snowfall in 24h, stormy and bad visibility. Moiwa800m: -9.6C, N13.9 (max 20m/s@6am), Mikaeri 764m: -8C, N15m/s, large snowdrift developments. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -8.5C, N11.2m/s (max 20m/s@6am). Hanazono#3: -6.6℃, NNE4.5m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape N16m/s, Kamui cape N13m/s, 1010hPa, 2.8m waves. Heavy snowfall and strong wind from the coastline. 60-90cm snowfall at the base of Moiwa. 3m cornices and 2m deep snowdrifts at knoll have developed overnight. Looking at all data, the avalanche risk is extremely high in slopes above 900m elevation in Higashi-One, Backbowl, O-sawa (Annupuri bowl), Mikaeri bowl. Beware of slides from side banks of switchback courses and under chairlift. It is highly recommended to stay inbounds today and until the wind calms down and the snowpack stabilises. Do not stay put at the bottom of gullies, avalanches strike from above. Avalanches are a natural phenomenon and are not an accident until somebody is caught in it. Many cars are getting stuck in the deep snow this morning, please adjust your plan to the natural conditions. I see just over 20cm here at the base of Akakan, but it also seems like the snowfall wasn't consistent across the region; some resorts are not reporting any real change in snow depth. This isn't the end, though (well, it shouldn't be, according to the forecasts), so I hope all the areas get a good cover of fresh snow. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . This morning the ski area is reporting 7cm and 18cm of fresh snow from upper areas (sounds a lot); none from down below early on but there is a bit. But, it is just a bit... a few cm in places. By this time tomorrow there should be more exciting news! Heavy snow still expected tonight. Someone emailed me/SnowJapan yesterday asking for 'us' to open up more ski lifts to cope with the many people around. As much as SnowJapan has tried to make it clear over the years (please read this), some people still seem to think that this website is an extension of a ski area (or all ski areas in Japan?!... or something). SnowJapan does not own or operate any ski area, including Nozawa Onsen. It is not a part of any ski area's operation. It is not publishing these daily reports on behalf of the ski area. It is not, in any way, a representative of the ski area. So, alas, we have no control over the operation of ski lifts at Nozawa Onsen! That said, the person had a point about it being crowded. It is a traditionally very busy weekend on the calendar (with Monday being a national holiday). We usually expect the whole mountain to be open by now. But unfortunately, there's just not enough snow for that to happen yet. I am not privy to ski area operation details and all that is involved in decision-making. However, I would guess they would very much like to open up more, but they just can't, presumably for safety reasons. I can't imagine they are holding back on opening runs if it was viable. Snow is the solution, and hopefully, we will have more of it soon. Very early morning, Yakebitaiyama was reporting 5cm of fresh snowfall and Okushiga Kogen has just declared 5cm of fresh too. Varied visibility this morning. In places it's pretty good. In others, limited. All eyes on what happens tonight. Forecasts tell us that it will be cold and snowy. Let it be so. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. Up to 8:30am, I measured a respectable 16cm of fresh snowfall and it is still snowing now. Limited visibility out there. I will hopefully be adding some good consistent snowfall numbers over the next several (or more) days. That sounds suitably Niseko-y, doesn't it? ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -5°, 25cm new snow in last 12hrs, bad visibility. Moiwa 800m: -8.8°, W2.4m/s (max 18m @ 4am). Mikaeri 764m: -6°, westerly wind and heavy snowfall. Hanazono 1000m: -8.6°, ESE2.9m/s (max 20m @ 2am). Hanazono 3 : -6.1°, ESE2.3m/s (max 18m @ 3am). Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NW9m/s. Kamui Cape N8m/s, 1005hPa, wave 1.2m. Heavy snowfall following the passing of a low pressure system in the early morning, over 5cm/hr. At the 800m treeline light winds and snow continue, cornices and snowdrifts are slowly developing, about 80cm on knolls, slab development is small and stablising, but increasing. However, 900m Backbowl West Ridge cornice face there is a high avalanche risk. Todays snow conditions are different to yesterdays. Do not carelessly stimulate slopes. These conditions will continue throughout the day. Many accidents occur during periods of bad weather. To compound things, today also has bad visibility. Pick a low risk route today. The snow is good in the trees. The bushes have filled in quite a bit, but the creeks still haven't. Be careful not to fall in. Cold. Gate 6 is likely to be opened, please follow the patrol's advice.
