The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. I am happy to report that it is snowing again and noticeably colder (though we might get some spells of sunshine during the day, apparently). I can report just under 3cm at my measuring point, but hopefully there will be some decent numbers to report over the next 3-4 days. Let's have it! Niseko Hanazono Resort made the decision to part open from this morning. The Number 1 lift and Hanazono Number 2 quad lifts are open over in that area, but the ski run that is open needs to be gotten to via the Number 1 lift. Mango Salad, anyone? (I think I'll stick with some toast). Yesterday, very unfortunately and by accident, I came across an online advert... claiming 'epic powder conditions in Niseko'. Not during peak season, but right now. Just how ridiculous is that? In my mind, that kind of nonsense actually does a disservice. We will get plenty of excellent conditions, at which time it will be appropriate to get really excited and maybe even use superlatives. Perhaps some people out there just like to be fed this dumb kind of thing by the folks trying to make money (?). Seriously, I don't know how some people can sleep soundly at night. Sorry for my mini rant. This kind of thing just never fails to bother me. I'll keep these things to a minimum, promise! ;) And just to be clear. Limited parts of each of the ski areas on the mountain are now open. Seven lifts are operating and only a few ski runs are currently available. There's not much snow yet and operations are very limited. Can you have fun and enjoy yourself? Yes, of course. But don't expect anything like peak season conditions. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's 1st December and the first day of the 2024-2025 season for four ski areas on the mountain - Hirafu, Village, Annupuri and Moiwa. Hurray! It is of course great to get the season going. There was no announcement from Hanazono yesterday, so that ski area is not yet up and running. (And they are still being shy with information this morning). Operations at each ski area are all rather limited, of course, as there isn't that much snow around just yet. I will be checking and updating operation information each morning in the list that has suddenly appeared below. (The 184cm snow depth being reported by Niseko Village is surely a typo, but hey, that's what they have put out there). Today marks the debut for the new Ace Gondola which has replaced the Number 2 Center Quad lift at Hirafu. Let's hope that it is, indeed, ace. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Geto Kogen. Now that the taps seem to have been turned on, the ski area is reporting another 40cm of snow up on the mountain. It's still snowing, and it has to be noted that it is a rather wet variety but we will of course gladly take it. The snowfall but might not last for much longer with some clearer skies due over the next few days. Snow should be back second half of the coming week, though. The ski area opens from this morning, with the Number 1 gondola scheduled to operate. Only the A1 course will be available. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. After all that excitement of yesterday morning (and during the day), I felt really tired this morning. I only managed about 90 minutes up at Goryu, but it was so great to be back on the snow and be able to enjoy such conditions in November. Just a little more snow really since that report yesterday and there is no further cm overnight. We have a lot of cloud around but there's blue sky too. A fine morning, for now anyway. Today is the first day of operations for Hakuba 47, but it's important to note that the base of that ski area is not actually open yet. Don't go there! The top lift that is open (Line E) is accessed via Hakuba Goryu. Effectively, best to think of it as just being part of Goryu for now. Sun is forecast for tomorrow and it will be getting fairly warm too. The next chance of decent snow is probably late in the coming week. Someone asked why the lift ticket at Goryu is 7,500 yen (which is a fair bit more than the others). It's a fair question. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I am happy to be able to report a fairly decent (if not massive) layer of snowfall this morning. I have measured 14cm since my last report. It is cloudy/overcast right now, but fairly bright, and very light snow is falling. This latest snowfall is not enough for ski areas to open. On the official Niseko United real-time page, Annupuri, Hirafu and Hanazono have all noted that opening has officially been delayed. (Niseko Village is still stuck on a message from early April and thanking folks for turning up last season). Yeah, I know, stuff like that kind of bugs me. Anyway, forecasts tell us to expect a bit more today and then what looks like consistent snow from Tuesday onwards. The ski areas will open as soon as they is enough snow, so we will just have to wait! --------------- 2:30pm update: What do you know, I have good news. :) Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu, Niseko Annupuri, Niseko Village and Niseko Moiwa have all announced that they will be opening from tomorrow morning, Sunday 1st December. Operations will be very limited at each, but... hurray, all the same! At the time of this update, Niseko Hanazono has not yet made any such announcement. (That may well change over the coming hours, of course, but I need to get myself elsewhere for the rest of the day. If there is any announcement before 6pm, it will be shown on this page). A decent amount of snow since yesterday is making that possible and the ski area is already reporting 100cm of snow in upper areas. Crazy, right? The official site also shows 35cm at base. The gondola and A1 course will be open tomorrow morning. Weather for tomorrow is currently forecast to be clearer with perhaps some sun. It might remain windy but probably not as much as today. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A very good morning to you from Hakuba. I remember just a few short days ago making a point of how things can change very quickly. Well, right now is very good example of that, as things have changed very quickly over the last few days. We have gone from nervously (well, some people) wondering when the snow might arrive to getting very large amounts of it covering the mountains in the space of a few days. All of a sudden, we have been blessed with a considerable amount of snow. There's a lot to report this morning, so I'll start with down here at base. It is still snowing lightly and I have measured over 30cm since my report yesterday. Really impressive, and we are still in November. (I know it doesn't always happen like that, but let's hope it is a sign for the season as a whole!) OK so let's talk about what ski areas are saying this morning. Yesterday afternoon, as much as 80cm of snowfall was being reported at Tsugaike Mountain Resort. This morning, that ski area is reporting a whopping snow depth of, wait for it, 126cm! (And 44cm at base). That really is very impressive. This morning, Hakuba Happo-one is reporting a snow depth of 80-85cm in the upper Kurobishi and Usagidaira areas. Goryu seems to be slow in getting information out this morning, but we can imagine similarly large amounts of snow there too. All three of those ski areas are opening limited top sections from this morning, details below. Tsugaike opened at 8am. An adult ticket from the ticket window is 5,500 yen for the day. Goryu plans to open from 10am with the top Panorama run available. An adult ticket is yours for the day at the handsome sum of 7,500 yen (!?) including 500 yen returnable. At least there is free curry on offer there at lunchtime today to make up for the bonkers ticket price. Happo-one plans to open from 11am with the top Panorama run available. Hakuba 47 plans to open the upper Line E lift tomorrow, but please note that the base area/gondola of 47 will not be open; you will need to get up to the Line E lift via Hakuba Goryu. -------------------------------- In other news, I just want to quickly mention that Hakuba Happo-one ski area has announced that a brand new gondola, along with a new 'base center' and car park, will be built at the ski area. The new lift will go from the Nakiyama base area up to Usagidaira. That should open in December 2027. There is so much going on just at the moment that I'll leave that subject for now and talk about it in more detail once the season has got started and settled in. Exciting times. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. That modestly modest snowfall yesterday morning at the time of my report didn't last long. Before too long, lower slopes were looking bare once again. Doh! I am happy to report another white covering this morning and it's a little bit more substantial than yesterday. I can this morning record (just slightly over) 3cm of snowfall at base. The ski areas wanted to be opening tomorrow. Obviously, obviously there isn't enough snow to be able to do that at the moment. So we are now officially into that 'ski areas will open as soon as there is enough snow' zone. We do have snow forecast across the next few days, so let's hoping for a decent amount.
