  • Shiga Kogen Now: Friday 13th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 78cm Posted on Friday 13th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It's a fine morning across the region. Cloudy but at the same time bright and sunny in places too. It's a cold start but today will quite probably be a bit milder than it has been. By tomorrow morning there should be another layer of snow to report. A good snowfall would be great, please. Still, everywhere is looking nice and white, and everyone is feeling very positive for this early season. Opening confirmed for tomorrow: Okushiga Kogen... but expect more. I might be late tomorrow as I try to gather as much information as I can. Long time readers will know that sometimes it is a bit of battle to get good up-to-date info from around the ski areas. Let's just hope they are a bit better at it all this season. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Light snow yesterday, but it didn't amount to any new cm on the report today. • Niseko Now: Thursday 12th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 145cm Posted on Thursday 12th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's still snowing, yey! I have another 12cm to add to the reports this morning. I believe that takes the total up to 145cm for the season so far. (Some of that melted before more arrived, of course... but it still existed). Regular and consistent snowfall is on forecasts right through into next week. At the start of the day, it looks like the top lift at Hanazono is on hold and the Annupuri gondola is operating at reduced speed. Apparently, a few people have asked about 'how does this compare with previous seasons?' Well, I'm not able to spend time keeping an eye on the the past with my daily duties in the present. Particularly at this busy early stage of the season. But, as luck would have it, I have been doing these reports for many years (and someone did them before me, too). There are literally thousands of archive reports available on SnowJapan, right here within the Niseko Now section. So you can go back and spend hours reliving previous seasons and analysing this stuff at leisure. You can look at overviews and general data, or you can deep dive into individual reports. The links to all this goodness are at the top of this report. See those big blue 'tabs' thingies? The ones that say Snowfall analysis, Seasonal archives and Snow depth data. They are your starting points. As are the Annual archive season links at the bottom of this report. I won't post the actual links here, in the hope that asking people to find them will encourage some learning about where all this stuff is. Enjoy! By the way, I believe the official snow depth data for ski areas around Japan will also start updating for the new season... very soon. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -8℃, 15cm snowfall in 12h, light snowstorm. Moiwa800m: -10.7℃, NNW10.2m/s (20m @ 6m), snowdrifts are developing and visibility is poor. Hanazono 1000m: -12.4℃, NNE7.3m/s (25m @ 6am) . Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW14m/s (20m @ 5am), Kamui cape NNW11m/s, 1014hPa, 2.7m waves. Drastic snowdrift developments, up to 80cm, are observed above 800m elevation. Top 50cm layer showed high instability during test, lower layers are consolidated and stable. Snowdrifts are still growing above treeline and the avalanche risk is high in leeward cornice slopes. Unstable slabs have also formed under the chairlifts. Stay away from open steep slopes above 800m elevation today. The snowpack may be shallow, but avalanches can happen when the conditions align. Do not put too much confidence in your skills, knowledge, experience and equipment. Carefulness is key to avoiding accidents. The groomer condition is great, the ungroomed area is a bit dense and heavy due to windload snow. Poor visibility. Have a nice day. ------------------------------------ Individual ski area information for Thursday 12th December 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . The ski area has reported 22-27cm of snowfall up on the top area since yesterday morning, and I have another 15cm to add from base. This very respectable showing for December continues, as does the outlook for regular snow on the various forecasts too. Exciting times! I can't find any announcements to report yet, but I think there is probably a good chance of some more lifts and terrain opening up at the weekend - particularly if we get more snow by then (which we are expecting). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 76cm Posted on Thursday 12th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It's a cold morning here in Shiga Kogen. Brrrrrrrr! Full on winter temperatures right now and some nice fluffy snow to go with it. I was saying this before, but I am going to say that we can confidently expect quite a lot more to open up this weekend, especially if we get the snow that is forecast before then. For this morning, I am finding some conflicting info out there on official site sources, so I don't want to complicate that by guessing. The list below now shows which ski areas in Shiga Kogen are at least part open. One thing for sure is that the Number 2 gondola at Yakebitaiyama is open from this morning. Hopefully before too long we'll be at the point where more - and then all - of the region is up and running. But I'm loving the contrast with the slow and somewhat painful start we got last season... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow and wind overnight, but not as much as it looked like at bedtime or so. The snow tapered off early this morning, but it’s falling again now. The good thing is that this nice gentle build-up means that, at least at Akakura Onsen two of the lifts (once again, at least) will be running Saturday. Got this from a knowledgeable member of the ski industry here, so you can take that straight to the ticket office. It’s actually very pretty snow; after two hours of snow clearing and sitting down to that morning coffee (and nothing tastes as good on a snowy, snow-throwing morning), it’s very Christmas-y out there. • Hakuba Now: Thursday 12th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 97cm Posted on Thursday 12th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . We have some blue skies once again. A bank of cloud around the mountain backdrop and some other clouds around too, but generally it is largely clearer skies and some sunshine at times/in places. A fine morning to be out on the mountains. Ski areas are this morning reporting a modest few cm, up to around 5cm, at higher elevations. On Saturday we are expecting three ski areas to open up: Hakuba Cortina, Hakuba Norikura Onsen and Kashimayari Skijo Family Park. There should be no problems in that happening. And it looks like White Resort Hakuba Sanosaka is going to be opening on Saturday (14th) too. I believe they originally planned to open on the 20th, so that is an early opening. Couldn't resist! That would leave just Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field left to open on 20th December (I think). Got to say, their website is really cumbersome to extract good info. It confuses me, even after I visit it often (for these reports). And you have to get past them boasting about record tourist visitor numbers, etc. Are normal folks really interested in that kind of stuff? (Can you tell I'm not a marketing type?!) ;) I would guess that more of the ski areas that are already open will continue to open up further too at the weekend. (Happo-one could surely already be offering up more terrain?) Especially as we should be getting snow tomorrow night into Saturday. And then on Sunday too. :) -------------------------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu New snowfall (as reported by the ski area): Top: 5cm Official snow depth (as reported by the ski area): Top: 130cm Top: 20cm Lifts: Telecabin gondola Alps Number 1 pair Alps Number 3 pair Courses: Panorama Grand Prix Super Technical Champion Dynamic Woody Toomi ------------ Hakuba 47 Winter Sports Park New snowfall (reported as 'todays snowfall' by the ski area): Top: 5cm Base: 0cm Official snow depth (as reported by the ski area): Top: 145cm Base: 50cm Ski lifts: All lifts operating (apart from Line D which usually only operates when the gondola is closed) Courses: All main courses open Notes: The Tree Riding Zones are not yet open ------------ Hakuba Happo-one New snowfall (as reported by the ski area): Kurobushi (1680m): 0cm Usagidaira (1400m): 3cm Nakiyama (800m): - Official snow depth (as reported by the ski area): Kurobushi (1680m): 165cm Usagidaira (1400m): 132cm Nakiyama (800m): -cm Ski lifts: Alpen quad Adam Gondola Panorama pair Kokusai Number 3 pair Kurobishi Number 2 quad Courses: Kurobishi Usagidaira Panorama Tenbo Riesen Slalom Usuba Notes: You can now ride back down to base (only to the gondola base) ------------ Tsugaike Mountain Resort Official snow depth (as reported by the ski area): Upper: 131cm Base: 25cm Ski lifts: Eve Gondola Han-no-ki pair lift Tsuga Number 2 pair Han-no-ki Number 3 quad Notes: You can now ride back down to base -------------------------------- Official snow depth (as reported by the ski area): 40cm Ski lifts: Number 1 pair Number 3 pair -------------------------------- Other planned opening dates for ski areas around Hakuba.
