Yesterday, more of the mountain managed to open up after my initial report, with the Ace Number 3, the King Number 3 lift and the Center Four lifts eventually moving at Hirafu. For those that made it out though and braved the winds and snow, there were some really nice snow conditions to enjoy. This morning there is another 10cm plus of fresh snow to report in the village. It's a generally cloudy and overcast kind of morning here with better visibility than we have had, and it is remaining cold at around -6 degrees now, while the snow is holding off for the moment. Winds have calmed down as well allowing for the ski lifts to operate as planned for the morning. We have more lifts moving this morning and today is the first day of the season for the Hirafu Gondola and the Hanazono resort area. In fact we have all three gondolas operating today. Hirafu are commenting that 26 of their 30 courses are now open with Hanazono reporting a snow depth on upper slopes of 220cm. The Kogen course now has a fair few items to play with in their Free Ride Park, so if table tops, boxes and rails are your thing, that's the place to head to. Snowfall is still on the forecast through into middle of next week and we might have to watch out for the wind again tomorrow and Monday. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here . Welcome to a fantastic bluebird morning in Niseko. Not a cloud to be seen and lovely blue skies up there. A sight to behold. Winter in Niseko we don't get too many of these and so it's something you need to take in and enjoy when it comes. It is all looking stunning this morning. Wow! Anyway, since my last report just a few cm of snowfall in the village. Without the cloud cover it is a particularly cold morning or it certainly feels it anyway. The thermometer says -5. Things are still set to warm up somewhat today and into tomorrow when we might still get that rain but hopefully soon becoming snow. Strong winds are expected as well. Once we switch into snow mode though, it does look positive for a run of days with decent snowfall, so the courses should soon be filled in and ready to track out again! Niseko Grand Hirafu yesterday opened the Sennoki course and so along with the connection to Niseko Village becoming accessible, they now have 12 courses open and 10000m of rideable terrain. This morning Niseko Grand Hirafu hits 2m of snow and with another 20-25cm of snow in the village falling overnight the fine start to the season seems to be continuing. It has been snowing early on but as I write this there are even some signs of blue sky peaking through to the east and even some cheeky short glimpses of sunlight shining down. Light snow is still falling on the mountain though, so we'll just have to see which way it goes. The forecasts seem to be for the light snow to ease off and for it to be a generally cloudy day in the Niseko region. It is another really cold start to the day and still down at around -5 degrees and it probably won't rise much either staying easily below zero. Not much going on weather-wise tomorrow and rain is still looking possible around Tuesday along with a warm up - to start off with at least - but after that there is some very encouraging days of potential heavy snow lined up as temperatures dip right back down again. There is a bit of a change with lifts at Niseko Village this morning where the Niseko Gondola and the Community Chair lifts will be operating today and tomorrow, and then they will be adding the Banzai Chair again from Tuesday. With the Niseko Village Gondola opening up, this means of course that there's the connection to the Grand Hirafu resort area. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here . Good morning from Niseko. Things did get colder yesterday and while we didn't really have much new snow to boast about by the time the lifts closed, we do have some new snowfall to report this morning... around 15cm. With the temperatures there should be some nice light powder conditions out on the mountain today. There's less wind as well this morning. It is continuing to snow as I write the report and not much of the mountains can be seen. It should be colder still tomorrow with temperatures dropping down well below zero in the village and probably minus double figures higher up. Niseko Grand Hirafu is showing an increase of 5-10cm of snow this morning in it's official snow depth numbers and there was about 15cm of snow waiting outside my place in Hirafu this morning. This morning Niseko Grand Hirafu has opened up the Super Course - apparently, this is the first time that they have ever been able to do that in November. Annupuri now saying that they have 9 of their 13 courses open, still being serviced by the same lifts, and as I mentioned yesterday the King Number 3 Triple Lift and Ace Family Pair lift at Hirafu will be operating from tomorrow as well. Tomorrow also sees Niseko Village open up but I can't confirm exactly what they plan to have open just yet. Today is the last day of the special lower early season ticket prices. The forecast is looking good for continued cold conditions and regular snowfall. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here . Tomorrow is the day! There's definitely enough snow for an opening tomorrow at Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Annupuri. By all accounts there is around a full 1m of snow out there on the mountain in places, so it certainly should be a good opening and a great early start to the season. Since the last report we have probably had another 10cm or so at base with another 15cm higher up, and early this morning it has been snowing lightly with the temperature hovering just above 0C. Anyway, yesterday afternoon the Grand Hirafu resort officially announced that they do indeed intend to go ahead with opening on Friday, and that they intend to have the Center Course open. There's a chance that more might open come tomorrow depending on how the weather sorts itself out and what the people in charge decide is good for us! They plan to have the Ace No 2 Center Four lift moving from 8:30am until 3:20am (last one going up), along with the Ace No 3 pair lift operating from 8:40am until 3:30pm. 8 hour tickets will be 2000 yen for adults and 1000 yen for children and seniors up until 30th November. I don't have any specifics on Annupuri's plans right at this moment. Tomorrow is actually a national holiday in Japan, so it's a 3 day weekend. Resorts are of course really happy if they are able to meet that opening date and there's a few more ski resorts in the region planning to be opening up tomorrow as well, including Rusutsu Resort and Kiroro Snow World. Taking a look at the forecast, it is going to be a cold one - especially Saturday - so be sure to be prepared. It might still be November but it's definitely winter. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here . Well, yesterday sure was a wild ride and from what I hear in many parts of Hokkaido as well not just around these parts. Some pretty crazy winds blowing things around and it was just... fun - fun, that is, to think about what lays ahead once things calm down, more than actually out wanting to be out on the slopes! Not that the lifts were actually moving once the storm set in. Truly wild blizzard conditions at times with close to no visibility. The winds calmed down somewhat by evening, when lots of people could be seen with the snow shovels moving snow about around the village. It's hard to put a number on the snowfall because the wind was blowing it all around, but outside my place there was more than 20cm. This morning the official snow depth numbers at Niseko Grand Hirafu resort are 160cm up top and 75cm at base - so that is an increase of 20cm and 5cm respectively since yesterday. I think this morning if you asked 5 different people about how much snow there was, you would get 5 different numbers - it's one of those days. But what's important is that we got some good snowfall yesterday. OK so on to today. It's still very cold. When I got up earlier it was -4 degrees out there and it's not risen much since then. The storm has moved on though and gradually we are seeing more and more blue skies open up. The sun is out and casting shadows and everywhere is looking great. Snow conditions out on the mountain today should be very good. This morning Niseko Grand Hirafu is back to what it was before the storm - the Ace Number 2 Quad (Center Four) and the Ace Number 3 Pair lifts, with the Shirakaba Course, Furiko Course and Center Course areas now open. The Annupuri Gondola and Jumbo Number 3 Pair lifts are Niseko Annupuri are also operating this morning. We can surely expect more to be opening soon. Don't expect the sun to last - we should be back to snow by tonight. Some forecasts even show rain lower down, fingers crossed that doesn't happen. I'll let you know tomorrow morning. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here . Did I mention the chance of rain yesterday? Well, sadly, we did get some rain fall overnight, but I am happy to report that it has turned into snow and so just a dusting to report this morning. Currently the temperature is hovering around 1C. Rewind back to yesterday though and some fantastic conditions to report. Some good powder to be found out there and the weather was co-operating too with clear skies and the sun out for a large part of the day. Fabulous. It almost sounds like a cliche already, but it really is hard to believe that we are still in November. We'll just have to see how the rest of the season stacks up, but it is most certainly a good start. Like we did last year, we'll be giving you some official snowfall numbers for Kutchan town, as well as the snowfall we observe ourselves and the resort snow depths just so we can try to compare things. Once we click over into December I'll round up November as we move forward. So, today. Like I said just a dusting of snow really and a wet kind of snow falling early on. Better than rain for sure and hopefully will soon be of a more desirable quality. There's more of a wind than yesterday out there as well. Things should get colder as the day moves on and it should be snowing into the weekend. From Saturday 1st December, Niseko Grand Hirafu plans to have the King Number 3 Triple lift and the Ace Family Pair lift moving in addition to what is already open, so we are gradually seeing more of the mountain open up. And of course Saturday also sees the opening of the Niseko Village part of the mountain. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here . Yesterday I noticed more than a few people around town with big wide smiles on their faces. A nice early season snowfall often does that. It was snowing very nicely for most of the day yesterday - along with those very strong winds blowing things about and making it feel really cold out there - and by last night there was a good 10+cm of fresh snow lying around the Hirafu area. This morning that would be a good 20cm in places. Unconfirmed reports coming in of anywhere between 30-50cm up on the mountain. That sounds like it might be about right to me. This morning conditions have calmed down considerably and we have seen some light snow falling and cloudy conditions. Temperatures look set to remain close to zero throughout the coming week with more snowfall probably with us into tomorrow and on and off over the week - and things taking another step down colder by the end of the week. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here . Good morning from Niseko. I think the people who were out on the slopes yesterday will have all had a good day, and it was good to see a fair amount of terrain open as well for the first day. There was quite a crowd ready for the first lifts of the season. As I mentioned yesterday, the lifts moving at Hirafu were the Ace No 2 Quad Center 4 and the Ace No 3 pair lifts, and the same lifts are operating today. Runs that were open were the Center course as well as Alpen, Green and Kokutai courses. Not bad at all, how things can change in less than a week! Yesterday I mentioned how things started off clear early morning but it was clouding over when the report was being posted... soon after, the snow was coming down again and it was snowing for the morning and only clearing up in the early afternoon. As per forecast, it was a very cold night and this morning is noticeably the coldest morning so far, it definitely feels it. Not much above -3 degrees. Since yesterday there has been about 15cm of fresh snowfall in village and the resort has increased their official snow depth numbers from 90cm to 115cm up top so we are already officially well over 1m. With snow falling again this morning and those continued cold conditions, it should be very nice conditions out there today. In other resort news, Niseko Annupuri yesterday announced that they will be opening on Sunday - so that's tomorrow. They plan to have the Annupuri Gondola and the Jumbo No 3 pair lifts operating. The Gondola will start taking people up the mountain at 9:00am and both lifts will close at 3:30pm. Special lift prices of 2000 yen for adults and seniors, 1000 yen for children (same as at Grand Hirafu) - these prices valid until 30th November. Courses open will be Utopia course, Shirakaba course, Family course and Junior course. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here . Just a quick morning update for you. There has been a slight snowfall since yesterday in the village and light snow is currently falling in Hirafu. There's not much to see of the mountains as they are shrouded in cloud so hopefully that means they are getting a new delivery - snow is forecast to be falling today and into tomorrow when stronger winds will likely be blowing about once again. There's only a few days now until the ski lifts are due to start moving and we've got to think that it is looking good for a Friday opening. Looks like it might be a snowy day on Friday as well with some very promising forecasts for into the weekend. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here . I thought I would bring you some good news this morning and that is that the slopes have a nice white covering this morning. After the very slight dusting of snowfall we saw on Friday morning, it's wet snow falling down in town this morning but on the mountain some nice big flakes of snow have been falling. While there's not a huge amount as yet, the forecast for the day is snow along with strong winds. Over the next few days into the middle of the week we can expect some more snowy conditions down to town as well, so hopefully come the middle of the week there will be some tasty news to share. Fingers crossed that lifts might be able to open up on planned dates. Grand Hirafu and Annupuri resort areas plan to open on Friday 23rd December. I don't have so much to report since the last report, though seeing as though our friends down in some of the Nagano Prefecture mountain areas seem to be getting a good snowing on today, I thought I would update you all from Niseko as well. So yes, we haven't been as lucky but no fear - snow is on it's way here too. Since my last report, temperatures have remailed fairly consistent and generally the dustings of snow we have seen have not really crept that far down the mountainsides just as yet. We could see some snow tonight and things are looking decent for later on in the weekend into early next week when hopefully temperatures will take a further dip, so let's keep an eye on that. The first snowfall down to town is not far away. Not too long after that, the lifts will be moving.
