  • Furano Now: Tuesday 19th November 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 9cm Posted on Tuesday 19th November 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Welcome back to Furano Now! The previous Furano correspondent of several years has retired. To where exactly, nobody seems to know, but I’ll go ahead and vote Bali, as that sounds nice. Anyway, I’ll be taking over the Furano reins and keep you posted on all things snow-related here. Like the famous Niseko correspondent, I too enjoy hot bread products in the winter, but my preference is strongly towards English muffins, which are difficult to obtain here, along with locally produced blackberry jam from Furano Jam Factory. I’ve lived in Furano for some years and feel like I have a good sense of the weather patterns here. We’ll see how my prediction record pans out. On to the snow report! Summary: Cruel teasers of snow, but nothing sticking around. We had several snow flurries during the day yesterday, which looked great, but nothing really stuck. Things ARE white, the roads and parking lots ARE quite slick with the frozen slush, and there IS exactly 2 cm of accumulation at my official top-secret SnowJapan weather station near the Kitanomine Gondola base. Unfortunately, that will definitely be gone by approximately 11:37 AM tomorrow, with a forecasted high of 5 C. That’s +5, not the good kind. The resort is scheduled to open on November 30, but I seriously doubt that will happen. The extended forecast has highs of +7 C near the end of the month. Positively awful. Naturally it’s colder at the top, but we’ll have to wait and see if the Prince has the guts to turn on the snow machines while it’s still so warm. While Furano is blessed with mucho, mucho snow, it doesn’t really kick in until mid-to-late December. White Christmas? Guranteed. Deep White Christmas? Not usually. Deep January? You bet. Until the resort does open, I’ll post here only when some snow happens. Think Snow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 10cm Posted on Sunday 24th November 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Guten Morgen Skifahrer und Snowboarder. Another very light dusting of snow overnight. It met the minimum 1 cm threshold, so I am obligated to tell you about it. But I'm not excited. I'm not animated. The juices are not flowing. It's not gonna stay. Not a chance. The forecasted high on the 27th is PLUS 13 C for crying out loud!! I might actually sweat! Dismal. As a Brit would say with droll humor, "Not ideal conditions for skiing." However, there is some positive news, but you have to look for it. Starting Thursday, it's supposed to snow for 3-4 days, BUT the highs are still +4 or 5 C. The best you can hope for is that some of the snow will stick on the upper part of the mountain. The only other positive thing I can see is that each day that passes is one day closer to when the party will actually start. I'm not really too hung up about it yet. For whatever reason, Furano usually doesn't start the year with a bang, but come it will. Just a question of when. So Think Snow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 18cm Snowfall at base this season 37cm Posted on Saturday 30th November 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . And we're off! But we're not out of the woods yet. A good chunk of snow fell overnight, and the forecast calls for snow for the next several days. Unfortunately, that thorny temperature issue says that will sometimes be rain. Booooo!! Hate that word. Anyway, first legit snow in my book. Looks like most of it will stay. Think cold thoughts. Update at 11:30am: Good news! The ski area will open from tomorrow morning. If they follow usual pattern, only the D lift will open in the Furano Zone. Guests will ride Ropeway up and down the mountain to access the lift - cannot ski to bottom. The resort claims 55cm at top, but their own webcam shows just over 20cm. Base reports 10cm, but that clearly doesn't include last night/this morning snow. (I stand by my 18cm in the original morning report, and there has been more since then). They will announce open lifts tomorrow morning and that information will be included in the next report. (* All data in this report remains from the original morning report).
