It's Sunday 30th May, and it turns out that today is going to be the last day of the season for the Shibutoge lift... and therefore officially the end of the season for Shiga Kogen ski areas as a whole. Apparently today is the 198th day after their 'pre-open' back on 13th November 2020. That is some good going. Take a well deserved rest folks. From tomorrow, it is going to be full-on ‘green season’ mode - for those who hadn’t already switched over. 'Spring' has seemed to go on for such a long time this season that I’m actually finding it quite hard to remember what the peak ski season was like. Rather than go back and re-interpret it all, I’ll let the day-to-day archive reports tell the story. You can catch up on the drama of the season as it happened in those reports. 20-21 has definitely been another ‘unique’ kind of season. I remember some very fine snow conditions. Very good. :) I also remember some extremely quiet ski slopes. I am always keen on avoiding crowds, but even I was feeling kind of lonely at times this season. While the lucky people who were able to be here could get to enjoy some great conditions, less people around is of course not happy news for the ski areas, the ski schools, the hotels, the restaurants... and everyone both directly and indirectly involved. (Which is pretty much everyone). As the general message mentions below, it does feel like some of the questions that we have now are the same ones that we were asking a year ago. Will we be getting back to some kind of normal in time for next winter? Will at least some overseas visitors be allowed into the country? We can only hope and try to remain genki! We may well be in the middle of an imposed pause on international travel, but the snow still comes and Shiga Kogen is still here, being beautiful. Those are things to be thankful for. And it does look like we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Let's go faster! On that note, that's it from me. I’d like to thank you for reading the reports this season. I hope to able to see some of you in person next winter. However all that shapes up, I'll be back later in the year to report on the 21-22 winter season. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Hello from Shiga Kogen. Fresh snow in Golden Week! It has been really odd weather these last few days but the most important thing to say is that I can see fresh snow. And it's actually pretty cold. Kumanoyu and Yakebitaiyama don't seem to be reporting the fresh stuff, but I have just measured 3cm and there is more than that in places. Though the main roads are clear. I imagine this will be the last snow of the season but it has given us a brief 'fresh' look which is always great to see. The following ski areas are part open: - Kumanoyu - Yokoteyama / Shibutoge - Terakoya - Okushiga Kogen - Ichinose Family - Takamagahara Mammoth - Yakebitaiyama They plan to keep going until Wednesday. Fine weather is forecast for tomorrow. Kumanoyu and Yokoteyama plan to remain open beyond that date. I'll update you on the situation later in the week. Even 10cm in places and perhaps even a little more. It started as temperatures dropped in the afternoon yesterday. The Kumanoyu and Yakebitaiyama ski areas are both reporting 5cm. Over the next few days at least we can expect lots of sunshine and nice spring weather conditions. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Snow early this morning, and is still snowing but also showing sings of brightening up in some areas. I was just over at Okushiga Kogen. Moderate snowfall, but signs of the sun breaking through clouds even over there. When this happens it's kind of exciting to see the weather changing and the skies 'open up', always best if the grand finale is bright sunshine and blue skies. We will have to see if we get some of that today. Feels like we might! Kumanoyu wasn't reporting any snow this morning but Yakebitaiyama are reporting 10cm. Today is going to remain cold. Tomorrow is going to see things warming up somewhat once again. Sunny skies expected. Forecasts show some decent snow lined up for perhaps Tuesday but before then we're due a mix of mostly sunny skies, possibly a little snow later tomorrow. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Hello from Shiga Kogen. Well, as expected it's rather different this morning. The snow is back and brought with it wind and low visibility too. Most lifts seem to be open as planned though. Early morning Yakebitaiyama were reporting 5-10cm of fresh snow and Kumanoyu were reporting 5cm. So not huge amounts, and it is being blown around, but the roads have a white covering once again. Light snow just now. Unfortunately it doesn't look like there's going to be much more out of these clouds, easing off tomorrow. We have had more snow since yesterday and it is still snowing in places (Okushiga Kogen, I see you!) but there is some sun breaking through the clouds in the central region of Shiga Kogen now. Interesting numbers: Yakebitaiyama: 20cm Kumanoyu: 5cm Should be nice conditions out this morning. Lots of cloud still around but maybe it will clear up somewhat today. Beyond this, the next week or so is looking dry. It's still cloudy and grey but forecasts say it should be clearer later on this morning.. and indeed there are blue skies in areas to the north already. 20cm of fresh snow is being reported by both Kumanoyu and Yakebitaiyama this morning. For the weekend: sunny, clear skies are forecast. As are rising temperatures again. That will probably bring more people out for the weekend which the ski areas will be happy about... and there's all this fresh snow too. A drop back down to winter cold and more snow is there on the forecasts for around Tuesday next week. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Along with the snow clouds, there's some breaks in the clouds appearing in places and even glimpses of blue sky on this cold morning. Often quickly being hidden again, but interesting weather conditions this morning. There's even a bit of sun shining through over at Okushiga as I write this (with light snow falling at the same time). Did I mention all the snow? Kumanoyu are reporting 50cm of snowfall this morning. Yokoteyama are also reporting 50+cm of snowfall! Very nice. (Yakebitaiyama are being curiously shy this morning and not mentioning a number). Today should be excellent conditions but with clearer skies forecast and hopefully a bit more snow today, tomorrow should be fantastic. Temperatures look likely to be rising again over the weekend with another of those 'unseasonably warm' scenarios. Hopefully we'll be getting more fresh snow on the other side of the weekend and forecasts do show temps going back low around Tuesday. There were reports of some wild weather going on yesterday but we actually got a few spells of clearer skies up here. Back to snow again last night though and the two resorts that report, Yakebitaiyama and Kumanoyu are reporting 10cm and 20cm respectively this morning. I have measured 16cm on the ground as of 9am and it is snowing now... in places, the kind of snow that builds up quickly. I have just come back from Okushiga Kogen where it was really coming down; less so here in the Hasuike area. We are due snow through tomorrow with clearer skies forecast by the weekend. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Changing conditions! Overnight wind and snow. Kumanoyu are reporting 20cm; Yakebitaiyama are reporting 10cm. I can report 14cm from my area not too affected by wind, though with the wind blowing it around there will be more and less in different places. Wind might also be affecting various lifts this morning. More snow due over the next few days but we'll need to keep our eye on the wind situation. A kind of hazy and overcast and bright start to the day today. The whole region is due for a weekend of fine and sunny conditions - along with unseasonably warm temperatures. (Not too much please!) But it should be very pleasant and I am sure with the forecast the popular ski areas should be relatively busy. The great bit is that around Tuesday or Wednesday, fresh snow is forecast to be on the way. (Lots of that please!)
