Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 1598cm Posted on Saturday 23rd March 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A little bit of fresh this morning, just enough to soften up the slopes but not really enough to cover the gray snow walls around town. Still a bit of breeze from the north, but not enough to interfere with lift operations. Hope there's no interruption, too, in this, the next to the last weekend for all but three resorts.... things go so fast (must really be getting old). That first snowfall seems like yesterday. At least we'll have enough snow to finish out the season, and it doesn't look like it will get crazy warm again over the coming week. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 1594cm Posted on Monday 18th March 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It is really sunny today; perfect blue skies earlier, a little bit of haze and a few clouds drifting through the gap between Mt. Myoko and Mt. Kurohime to the south. We had a lot of snow falling in the afternoon and into the evening yesterday, but it didn't result in a whole lot of new snow on the pack. The freezing level is going to be going up from now on, and possibly way up. The forecast had the peak around 3500 meters yesterday, but it's "down" to 3300 now.... So maybe a little rain ahead, sun for a few days. After all, we are in the last two weeks of the season for most of the resorts, which will be closing on the 31st. More on that as we get closer. Oh, yeah, and it's not as cold as the resorts are reporting (it did get cold overnight, but it's really nice now). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 1587cm Posted on Sunday 17th March 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A little snow in the afternoon yesterday and overnight. Pretty wild temperature swings, too; my simple outside thermometer says it's 6° now (maybe a little high), but that it went down to -7° overnight and had a 24-hour high of 8.5°! I guess to be expected in this time of year (we won't get into climate change and temperature swings and such). Looks like this might not be the last snow of the season, but we have some warm weather to get through before that. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow on the ground! Time to get out the snow clearing equipment one more time. And everything is all nice and white again, with a blue sky to make it just that much nicer looking (and fluffy clouds for contrast). OK, that's a bit much, but it is nice out there, it was colder overnight and it's nice to have some extra snow to top of the supply. Offpiste, there is a chance that this new, fresh, pretty cohesive and compressible snow could be a bit slide-y on steep slopes. Just take a little caution and check it out before you drop in (with the usual caution on narrow valleys, etc.). On piste it should be great, at least until the sun warms it up and things get a little sticky. Hey, it's better than rain! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 27cm Snowfall at base this season 1555cm Posted on Friday 8th March 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . What a change! It started last night with the wind getting stronger from the north, then an increasing amount of snowfall. Around 3 am (the sound of the plows once again woke me up to get my snow clearing going), there was a lot of lightning and thunder. Low down, too (a lot of times there's a flash of lightning, a long wait, and then deep, distant rolling thunder over the mountains). Flash and bang and lots of graupel (soft hail) falling. The rate of fall has actually picked up here, with the snow changing to a little nicer, more crystally shapes. It is pretty heavy snow, but it is fresh snow, and enough to add to the snowpack (my total snowpack pole is now back to nearly 270cm, or about the same as the resorts are reporting). Could be a little tricky on some steep slopes, with wet, compact snow below and fresh, heavy on top, so be a bit careful outside the ski area. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A sunny, nice day in Myoko! Had to put an exclamation point on that! Because I know there are a lot of people who are here for a vacation and the weather and snow have been pretty.... non-exciting! So a good day for enjoying some skiing. A little dusting of snow overnight, too. Enough to make things nice and white, but hopefully not enough to be sticky under the skis. Tomorrow looks better than earlier forecasts, too, with the rain getting pushed back to Monday. So get out there! No complaints! Warm sun and cold beer (why do I write that so much?). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's not so good out here in Myoko today, but not that bad in a sense, either. There is wet stuff falling from the sky, but very lightly at the moment (it was raining fairly hard with some wet snow mixed in earlier this morning). It's fairly bright, too, so not as gloomy as it could be. Pretty foggy up on the hill, but it's not so bad from base up to halfway up the mountain. It could well be snowing at the top of the resort and up the hill, but there's not a lot ahead on the forecast to make much new snow possible. The freezing line is going to stay around 1000 meters and up, so it's going to stay mild if not warm for the near future. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The gloom is gone today in Myoko; we even have a little bit of blue sky and occasional sunshine to brighten things up. A tiny bit of fresh snow on top of the wet and crunchy stuff below. It's still not great outside the ski area, but there are dark clouds coming in from the north that look like they might bring in some fresh white stuff. The winds offshore have definitely moved from yesterdays west/southwest to the north, which is a good sign. Temperatures are also down today, another good indicator of things other than rain and fog. It's been pretty quiet and stable this season, though. No upheavals at the resorts, no major electrical failures or riots or anything really to report. Boring, I know. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 1500cm Posted on Friday 15th February 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A little more reasonable on the snowfall, after the huge dump over 24 hours yesterday. A few people asked about the 91cm; because I reported early and the test board was actually out for more than 24 hours, we got a pretty big number that might have been divided by others.... but that total remains, right at 4 meters, which is right in line with the resorts. A nice day to end the work week, with some sun and fresh white out there to enjoy!
