- Myoko Now: Saturday 1st February 2020
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 39cm Snowfall at base this season 357cm Posted on Saturday 1st February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another great day of snow gets us back in that Myoko mood. I can't tell you how liberating it is to get the snowthrowing machines going. We complain, but when we don't get to make things nice and neat it just feels wrong.... This is in fact the second best day of the year so far; my records say we had 40cm on January 7, and we just missed that at base level today. Much lighter snow today, too; lots of beautiful big star-like crystals early in the morning, just nice mixed stuff later on. Still way too bushy outside the ski areas for much climbing (or turning). I did hear from several people that they set off sluffs, with the ice layer under the surface (the result of that last bit of rain before the snow) not bonding well to the new. Be careful on steep open slopes; think about where you might end up if things did slide! Lots of narrow valleys in Myoko to get caught in with lots of snow coming down on top of you (just trying to paint an unpleasant picture; we want you to be safe!). Let's see how long this welcome change in conditions continues! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A colder, nice day in Myoko today. The sky is about half clear, but it's hasn't been too sunny yet, as it is more cloudy to the north and east. That should keep the nice, light 10cm we got since yesterday good and cold. And light. Things are changing fast, though, with rain likely returning from tomorrow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 106cm Posted on Friday 3rd January 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It was really sunny early this morning, but the clouds have started to move in from over Mt. Myoko. The barometer is rising a bit, but that will likely change very shortly as our next front moves in (and I love the words, "heavy snow" appearing on the SnowJapan weather page for Akakura Kanko). Things are better with the snow we've had, but it's hardly where we'd like to see the snowpack. Kurohime remains closed; Suginohara has opened a second lift, but it is thin on the south side of the mountain. I think we'd all like to see a real Myoko snow, something like 50 to 70 cm (yes, we complain about having to clear snow, but everybody worries a lot more when there isn't enough). Hopefully that will be our report for tomorrow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1705cm Posted on Saturday 27th April 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Time for an update as we enter the super-long Golden Week for 2019. And it is coming in with style — it is snowing at the moment. Things really turned spring-like over the four days I was away, with the snowpack going down from about one meter to about 30cm. Same for the ski areas, but now suddenly some snowfall! And it's gotten noticeably colder. Who knows what it will do (I doubt it will build up much, but who knows in a season like this one?) Oh, and the cherry blossoms are now sort of mid-bloom. The surprises just keep coming in the last days of the Heisei Era. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It is sunny; spring has returned. It's also bright out there, with blue skies and that sun bouncing off the now perfectly white snow. Pretty nice day to get out and do something in the hills! I thought this might have been our last cycle of snow, but our trusty SnowJapan weather forecast is showing that the freezing level is likely to go down around Monday, and that we might in fact get some more snow that day all the way down to base, maybe heavy high up! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . That snow kept going through the day and into this morning. We even had a bit of a whiteout in the afternoon - a blizzard in April! For those of you still around, the snow is cohesive and a bit heavy, so it will definitely be sliding on the harder snow below if you're out there in the backcountry. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's been a bit of April Fool weather from yesterday into today: 35 cm of fresh? Not what you'd expect, but it looks like the snow could actually start up again after a sunny start to the morning. The white is nice, after the increasing gray and brown of melting snow walls. The new snow also means that Akakan is back up to 3 meters of snowpack; only two lifts are running, but you can ski all the way down to the base. You should be out skiing today! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Back in the office for the post-season. We got more snow after a day of rain, snow, blustery winds, blue skies. A very moody weather day to end the main season, and March. Four resorts remain open, with somewhat limited lifts and runs. But there's still a lot of snow out there, something I really realized out there on the cross-country course between Ikenotaira and Akakan. Last year we had to gather up snow for some of the runs at the national tournament; this year for a more regional race we had plenty of snow. Tons, actually. Still snow to enjoy, even if the cherry blossoms are already in full bloom in nearby Takeda. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It was a dark and stormy night.... Pretty blustery last evening, with lightning, thunder, strong winds blowing everything everywhere. And wake up to find that the rain at some point became snow. Which is still falling, and actually pretty steadily as we put this report out. Maybe a few more cms through the day? Again, I saw a lot of people getting ahead of themselves and pulling the snow tires off. Good luck out there! It's not that much, so they're probably OK, especially once they head down the hill and get a little lower. It's pretty wet snow up here, so I bet it's rain in the Arai part of Myoko, and on to Joetsu City. I need to get this report out a little early today, but boy are the resorts slow in getting out their reports! Sorry, readers... Just assume it's a little colder than yesterday, and the snow depths probably won't change much or at all. Just a little bit of snow fell overnight, so little that it had melted by the time I poked my official study board. We'll give it 1cm, just to note that we had some snowfall. - Myoko Now: Sunday 24th March 2019
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this season 1609cm Posted on Sunday 24th March 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Got myself delayed just enjoying the snow.... not a lot; can't expect that much this time of year (and some overachievers have already changed out their snow tires, so we don't want them to suffer. Too much). I think the resorts are having a slow morning, too; a lot of them haven't changed their reports from yesterday. The countdown kind of begins today: one week until the end of the season for most resorts, apart from Akakan, Seki Onsen and Lotte Arai. More information on the runs and such next week. Because for now we have a whole hill there for us, still plenty of snow in the pack and a bit of fresh on top!
