  • Yuzawa Now: Monday 13th April 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Monday 13th April 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We have cloud and blue sky this morning. It was clearer earlier on this morning, actually, but we do generally expect fine weather today and temps rising to just over 20C in town. From today, GALA Yuzawa is down to one quad lift operating (and gondola to get up there, of course) and two courses - the main Entertainment and Gigi runs. The top summit course and beginner winding detour course are now closed, and the ski area is probably moving snow from the summit course to help the courses that remain open. It is worth noting that Entertainment and Gigi are not suitable for total beginners, especially in these spring conditions. The snow depth numbers at Kagura hasn't changed for a fair while; they still claim to have 2.5m of snow up top. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 70cm Notes: Lifts operating: Gondola and Barouche quad lift. Courses open: Entertainment and Gigi. The planned closing date is Wednesday 6th May (subject to change) ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 250cm Base: 150cm Notes: Lifts: 12 of 17 lifts remain open with both Mitsumata Ropeway and Tashiro Ropeway bases open. Courses open: 27 of 30, according to the website this morning. The Tashiro Area (and Tashiro Ropeway) plans to be open until 7th May. The Kagura Area (via Mitsumata Ropeway) plans to be open until Sunday 17th May. ---------------------------- All other ski areas in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region have now closed. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The sun is out again this morning and we expect more fine and warm spring weather today. It warmed up to around 23C in town yesterday afternoon and it will be probably similar today. Another shout out to the team at Gala as they keep their two remaining runs looking very respectable every morning. Snow is being moved around every evening; now including from the top Grenoble course. Respect. I am really intrigued to know how long they will be able to continue! Official snow depth at Gala is now at 50cm. Kagura is still looking good for snow cover. It should be a very fine day to be out on the mountains. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. This morning we have some blue sky and some white cloud. The cloud might win the day today and some rain is forecast for tonight but hopefully it won't last long. It feels rather warm this morning. Let me clarify about my Kagura comment yesterday... snow cover at the main Kagura area is still looking decent. The Mitsumata area probably won't last much longer. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 16th April 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Thursday 16th April 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Well, the big news from yesterday afternoon was that GALA Yuzawa made their announcement: Friday 17th April (tomorrow) will be their last day for skiing and snowboarding. I thought they might be able to reach this coming weekend, and I'm sure they wanted to, but unfortunately there's just not enough snow to work with. Some rain yesterday surely didn't help. Tomorrow may be over two and a half weeks earlier than the planned closing date of 6th May, but considering the circumstances they did well to remain open until now. Gala does intend to remain open until 6th May for some activities (snow enjoyment park, snow mobile, snow buggy, etc), but from Saturday the ski lift will not be moving and there won't be any skiing or snowboarding. That all means that from Saturday the only skiing and snowboarding in the region will be at Kagura ski area. It is a cloudy start to the day (not raining) and it looks like visibility at both the open ski areas is poor early on. But it is expected to improve though not warm up too much today. It might even feel a bit chilly up on the slopes. Tomorrow should be fine, warm and sunny. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 40cm Notes: Lifts operating: Gondola and Barouche quad lift. Courses open: Entertainment and Gigi. Tomorrow (Friday 17th April) is the last day of the season for skiing and snowboarding. GALA will remain open until 6th May for sightseeing/basic snow activities, but not for skiing or snowboarding. ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 220cm Base: 120cm Notes: Lifts: 12 of 17 lifts remain open with both Mitsumata Ropeway and Tashiro Ropeway bases open. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday didn't clear up as much (and as quickly) as we thought it would, but this morning we have clear blue skies. It is a fine spring morning. Today is the last day of the ski/snowboard season for the GALA Yuzawa ski area. For this last day, just the one course (Gigi) is available. From tomorrow, GALA will be open - but only for activities other than skiing and snowboarding. The Mitsumata Area of Kagura (ski area) is just about still 'open', but is now officially basically just to get to and back from the central Kagura Area. So people using Mitsumata Ropeway make their way over to the Kagura Area (via the gondola) rather than hanging around the Mitsumata Area. Hope that makes sense. (One of the three official 'areas' of Kagura Ski Area being called 'Kagura Area' can get confusing to people... and sound awkward when trying to explain it!). Should be nice weather over the weekend, too. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 30cm Notes: Lifts operating: Gondola and Barouche quad lift. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 18th April 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Saturday 18th April 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Largely clear blue sky and sunshine this morning, with just a little cloud in places. It got as warm as 24C in town yesterday and while it might not be quite as high as that, it will probably warm up to over 20C again today. More sun and warmth is forecast for tomorrow too. From this morning, the only skiing and snowboarding available in the Yuzawa region is at Kagura ski area. GALA Yuzawa ski area is open from this morning - for 'snow activities' (sledding, moon bikes, snow cart tour, snow buggy panoramic tour) and sightseeing. The gondola and one quad lift are operating, but skiing and snowboarding is no longer possible. Some other ski areas will be offering some spring-type activities as Golden Week approaches, but at the moment I believe it is only GALA that is open. Anyway, those things are all another topic and not something we will dwell on in these reports. From now on, Yuzawa Now reports will be posted several times a week until the end of the season at Kagura. We'll let you know when there there are any changes of note. A quick announcement was posted a few days ago (here), regarding current work on a new version of SnowJapan that is due to appear before next season. Work started on the project about a year ago. That seems such a long time ago now. There's still a lot of work left, but I'm excited to see all the work come together over the coming months. Hopefully, without any unforeseen issues/problems! There's some fairly major changes coming... --------------------------------- Kagura: Official snow depth: Top: 220cm Base: 120cm Notes: 12 of 17 lifts remain open. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Wednesday 22nd April 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa. It will be less windy today, and Kagura is scheduled to be open again. Snow at both of the Ropeway entry points at Kagura, Mitsumata and Tashiro, is thin on the ground - but both are still available and snow cover on most of the main open runs remains decent. According to the website this morning, 25 ski runs are still available with 12 lifts operating. It looks like 'Kagura summer gerende' operations have been cancelled. In typical Prince resort fashion, the brief announcement they have released is a bit vague, offers no reason and encourages various questions, so I'll probably revisit this topic when I confirm more details. But if I am understanding it correctly, with GALA Yuzawa not doing the summer ski thing this year, that will mean that there basically is no summer ski options in the region this summer. --------------------------------- Kagura: Official snow depth: Top: 180cm (unclear if this is updated today or not) Base: 70cm Notes: 12 of 17 lifts remain open. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Some limited to poor visibility at times yesterday at Kagura, but thankfully it is much clearer this morning with blue skies. And after some actually quite chilly conditions yesterday - I put on a ski jacket when I went for a walk in the evening - today should be warming up back over 20C in town. No major changes to the status of lifts/runs at Kagura. Tomorrow is a national holiday and the start of the 'Golden Week' period. Colder conditions expected again and a chance of rain. Thursday and Friday this week are normal weekdays, with the main part of Golden Week being this weekend through Wednesday next week. Going back to that announcement about there not being any summer skiing on mats at Kagura (Mitsumata slope) this season. That has been confirmed, because... well, because. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Today is Showa Day and a national holiday in Japan. Golden Week often brings us warm and sunny weather, but this morning Kagura looks rather foggy and dull early on. Looks like it should be quite cold up there and some forecasts even mention a chance of light sleet or snow. It feels quite mild in town and we expect a good chance of some rain. Kagura seemed rather excited yesterday to share with us news about their 'special price' (55th Anniversary Plan commemorative project!) for car parking during the holiday days within the Golden Week period. Only 1,000 yen! (The usual price this year is 1,500 yen). Forgive me for being less than excited about that news. Update: From today, Mitsumata is no longer available as a connecting course. What does that mean? Well, on the way back from the still-open ski runs at Kagura to Mitsumata at the end of the day, this is what you need to do: - after getting off the Kagura gondola, take the Mitsumata Number 2 pair lift (as usual) - walk 170m to the top of the Mitsumata quad lift - ride the Mitsumata quad lift down - walk 230m over to the top of Mitsumata Ropeway - take the Mitsumata Ropeway back to base --------------------------------- Kagura: Official snow depth: Top: 150cm Base: 50cm Notes: 12 of 17 lifts remain open. Both the Mitsumata Ropeway and Tashiro Ropeway bases are open. Some walking is now involved on the way back to base using Mitsumata Ropeway. (See above). 22 of 30 ski runs are still available, according to the official website this morning. The Tashiro Area (and Tashiro Ropeway) plans to be open until 7th May. The Kagura Area (via Mitsumata Ropeway) plans to be open until Sunday 17th May. Closing dates are subject to change - it will all depend on how much snow remains! ---------------------------- All other ski areas in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region have now closed for skiing and snowboarding. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 1st May 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Friday 1st May 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Update Kagura announcement: the ski area will also be closed tomorrow (Saturday 2nd May) with strong winds forecast to continue. Original morning report Good morning. It's very windy, very mild, rainy in places - and Kagura will be closed for the day. That means there's no ski lifts moving today. And we expect do rain during the day. Currently dry in places, but wet in others (particularly to the south). Forecasts seem to be saying that tomorrow will be clearer and sunny ---- but it will also still probably be very windy, perhaps enough to keep Kagura closed. We'll have to see. The weather expected today and tomorrow is the kind that is particularly unfriendly to the snow that remains. And, of course, there's not much left. (The Tashiro section of Kagura might well struggle to re-open beyond this weather, but that's purely a guess and not based on any official information). • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 3rd May 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 917cm Posted on Sunday 3rd May 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It's a light grey and overcast kind of morning early on. Rain is expected from tonight and much of tomorrow. After the not nice weather (particularly on Friday) and Kagura being closed for the last two days, it does appear to be opening this morning. Including the Tashiro Area, which has apparently survived the storm! It might still get fairly windy up there today. Official snow depth may not have been updated yet on the official site (there's no time/date stamp), but it remains unchanged at 110cm top and 30cm base. (Actually, I wonder where that 'base' measurement is coming from). After the rain and wind and warmth, 'unchanged' seems... unlikely. The main Kagura run is looking more patchy than it was three days ago, but still offering fairly decent cover, even with some hints of brown. The ski area is displaying that 19 of 30 courses as open and 12 lifts operating. --------------------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 110cm Base: 30cm Operations: 12 of 17 lifts.
