Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 5cm
Snowfall at base this season 424cm

Posted on Friday 25th March 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.

After the snow up high mentioned in my report yesterday, it's an even better one this morning.

Snow falling yesterday for periods though it didn't really amount to anything at town level, but this morning I woke up to the sound of sprinklers and looked out of the window to see... 5cm of snow on the ground! That was a good surprise.

And here's what the 'resorts that report' are reporting:

Naeba: 30cm of fresh snowfall up top!

Kagura: 20cm of fresh snowfall

Maiko: 15cm of fresh snowfall

Not bad at all! I think it's fair to say that all slopes will have got a layer of 10-30cm of fresh on them which is most welcome indeed.

What's more, it's actually still snowing - though it's not really expected to continue beyond this morning.

So yes, it is probably a very good morning to be heading up high and enjoy this late March snowfall.

From tomorrow, we're expecting more in the way of sunshine and temperatures starting to gradually rise again.

Naeba have announced that they will be open until Sunday 3rd April, which will be the last day of their season.

Resort official snow depths (Friday 25th March 2016) and any specific news at time of writing:

There are now lots of patches of ground on view showing on lower slopes around town - though covered up temporarily this morning with some fresh snow! Some more than others. The snow situation means that some courses/areas at resorts are now closed. If you are planning on visiting, I recommended that you check with the individual resorts for their up-to-date details. You can find their websites from the links below. Note that snow cover is not a problem higher up so there's still a lot of skiing and boarding left.
