The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba and I think it's definitely a good one with some decent fresh snow to report from around the mountains. As you can see noted below, up to around 30cm in places on the slopes with around 10cm or so down here at base village level. :) Yesterday the snow we got falling on mountain was more of the heavier kind - this morning it looks drier and lighter, and I'm looking forward to getting up there to enjoy it once I share this info with you. Hopefully the wind that is currently affecting some upper lifts around the valley will ease off and let them get going. As I write this some lifts at Happo-one, 47 and Goryu are on hold. Cortina and Tsugaike both are limited this morning as well due to weather and/or avalanche risk. One of those days when it is best to check with the resort you plan to go to before heading out as conditions may well change. The forecast is for snow, moderate winds and poor visibility today and into tomorrow, a decent chance of clearer and calmer conditions tomorrow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . After another very fine day yesterday weather-wise, we have some fresh snow this morning from overnight. The snowfall will probably be easing off this morning and even now from the village we can see some blue sky so maybe it will clear up nicely during the daytime. Not so cold overnight last night and at 9am this morning it is around -1C. So yes a bit of fresh snowfall this morning. Different resorts reporting varying amounts of snow this morning and I have noted them all down as far as I can find below. Ranging from a mistaken 0cm (I think) to up to 20cm at Cortina, fresh will vary where you choose this morning I think. Would like to report deeper numbers, so when can we expect them? Looking like it might be Sunday when decent snowfall starts and it's expected to be snowing well into the week next week. Some good numbers probable/likely/hopefully! In the meantime before that, tomorrow is looking set to fine, clear and sunny with temperatures venturing into low positive numbers in the afternoon. --- Official snow depth numbers and operations at time of writing on Friday 6th February 2015. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It was snowing yesterday - quite heavily at times - until late afternoon, with those windy conditions continuing. I was up at Goryu mid-afternoon - the snow was really coming down and at times nearly total whiteout conditions. Some more snowfall overnight and it's a cold morning with snow still falling in places but as I write this now it has eased off - I can even see some blue sky up there and is that some sun shining through in places. It may well be. Strong morning winds affecting some top lifts again this morning around the resorts, fingers crossed that situation will improve to allow them to open. We aren't expecting much snow today and over the next few days the forecast is generally for a mix of cloud, sun and light snow showers from time to time. It should be keeping cold, perhaps with slightly milder conditions around Wesnesday and Thursday. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . There has been another 5-10cm or so of fresh snow in the village and base areas this morning. More higher up - Happo-one telling us there was 15cm of fresh up on the Usagidaira area of the resort. It was snowing good last night though it must have eased off overnight. Still, daily top-ups at are certainly a good thing. It doesn't look like there's much change on the open lift/courses front this morning with operations pretty much as they were yesterday. The forecast tells us that it might actually clear up a bit today and for the next significant snow to be arriving at the end of the coming week. Before then we might get a mix of sometime snow showers, sun and rain. --- Happo-one Happo has 4 lifts moving again morning, same as yesterday. The resort is reporting snow depth of 20cm at base and 95cm at Usagidaira, with another 15cm of fresh snow at Usagidaira. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . After rain dampening spirits just a bit (or maybe a bit more) yesterday, this morning it's brighter and the sun is making an appearance. Still there's quite a lot of cloud around, but some blue sky as well... and no rain. So it's May 6th - the end of Golden Week and the end of the snow season for Happo-one, Hakuba 47 and Tsugaike Kogen. The upper area of Hakuba Goryu will remain open until Sunday May 11th. It looks like we should be enjoying fine and sunny conditions for most of the week. I'll post another report before the weekend, and then a season wrap-up after Hakuba Goryu has closed. Temperatures down to around 3 degrees overnight in the village, with highs of around 20 degrees expected during the day today. Warm! More of the similar expected tomorrow too. Hopefully less of the haze and more of the clearer skies. Oh yes --- lovely blossoming trees alert! Hakuba Goryu: Plans to be open until early May. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Well, that's it folks. Just a short while ago the Gondola at Hakuba Goryu was due to bring the last people down from the upper slopes after their last slide on the snow for the season. That means that the snow season is now officially over at all of the ski resorts in the Hakuba area - you're going to have to hike higher now if you still want snow! I was just looking back over the reports from the season and noticed that the first lifts started moving on 22nd November 2013. I make that... 171 days; 5 months and 20 days; Nearly 47% of a full year. That's a long season. Otsukaresama deshita, everyone involved in Hakuba! I wonder for those of you visiting Hakuba, how was it? It sure was long, though I don't think anyone would describe it as being a classic season. We had our fair share of drier periods and a few wet ones. But we also had lots of great conditions on mountain too, and surely they will be the ones that get remembered. I was reading the wrap-ups from the other Now reports on the site, and can only echo one common theme that was mentioned in a few - our expectations here are so high, and those of us who know the area well and have visited often are simply spoilt! An average or even less than average kind of season here would be a great one in other places. (Remember also that those snowfall numbers added up below are for down in the village - which is obviously much lower than higher up on them there mountains! Reported snowfall at the resorts was also recorded within the reports where available). I have talked to lots of people through the season and most seemed to be very pleased with their visit to the village. Not just the skiing and boarding, but the atmosphere, things going on, things to eat and drink, friendly locals... :) Hope you come back. 'When's the best time to visit' is a common question. Always a difficult one and sadly there's no guarantees with the weather of course. You can come here mid season and be unlucky with the timing; on the other hand you can come early or late on and enjoy awesome conditions. The best thing I can suggest is you sit down with a cup of your favorite beverage and read through the Hakuba Now reports here on SnowJapan from recent seasons. There's a lot of reading but it will give you a clear idea of how things have happened going back over a decade. There was another noticeable increase in the number of foreigners visiting Hakuba this past winter too - and lots of different languages able to be heard as well. I think some Japanese visitors are surprised by that change. It will surely continue into the coming years. So now we head into late spring, rainy season and then summer. Even here in Hakuba, the summer heat can be brutal - but we have the nearby mountains to climb and are able to escape to higher altitudes. Ropeways will be operating to help you get there. At the time of writing, I believe the correct dates to be as follows: Happo-one - from Saturday 24th May (the Alpen Line until 4th November; Kurobishi line from 5th July until 13th October) Tsugaike Kogen - from 31st May Hakuba 47 - from Saturday 12th July Please do check with the resorts for the latest information and updates... they don't seem to have got their 'Green Season' mode into full gear just quite yet! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . The skies gradually got greyer and greyer as the day went on yesterday, and then the snow came. Temperatures down to about -6 overnight and at 9am not much warmer just above -5. Lots of cloud around, some breaks in the cloud and even a bit of blue sky at times, but the forecast is for cloud/snow showers today. Looks like it is snowing now at higher elevations. Strong winds up there too as well I'm afraid and as I write this the lifts on the top area of Happo including Skyline and the Alpen quad upwards are on hold, as well as the top area of Goryu/47. So wind is a factor today. Let's hope it calms down quickly and lets those lifts get moving. Some sun tomorrow maybe but followed up by more snowfall Sunday night into Monday. From tomorrow, the extra lifts and runs plan to be open/available again for the last part of the season... until Tuesday 6th May. There's still good snow cover up on the open runs. The snow might be starting to look a bit tired and 'less white', but cover is not an issue. Just keep waxed up. Snow is quickly retreating from lower areas of the ski resort now. But there's still snow around in places. And we are in the last week of April! Some southerly winds yesterday, too, and with some very warm temps too any remaining snow in lower areas was quickly disappearing and the snow line moving up the mountain. You could almost see it moving! ;) OK so tomorrow the wind shouldn't be a problem and we enter the main/big section of Golden Week. Weather doesn't seem like it is going to be clean-cut clear (like it often is during Golden Week) with some mixed conditions showing up on various forecasts. Currently Monday is looking the best bet for clearer and sunny skies. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa Onsen. Here we are - the last day of the 2024-2025 snow season in Nozawa Onsen. It might be early May but there is still good snow cover up on the top area of the ski resort. I hope that anyone visiting Nozawa had more than a fine time and got to enjoy the snow, the community, Naski (everyone's fave bright green skiing vegetable mascot) and all the goodies that Nozawa has to offer. Thank you for reading the reports this season. It's time for me to have a bit of a rest before enduring the heat of summer. And then I should be back in November 2025.
