Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata

New snowfall at base 10cm
Snowfall at base this season 278cm

Posted on Thursday 23rd January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here.

First of all one thing about yesterdays report... I didn't mean that "no new snow" was a good thing, just that the weather was very fine and that it was a feel good day out and about. And it was that.

We're back to grey and cloudy this morning though but I do have 10cm of fresh snowfall to report. Which is obviously a good thing!

Keeping cold down to -7 degrees earlier on and not much above that now and light snow falling.

Tomorrow and Saturday like many areas of Japan are probably going to be milder and we should start the day off with sunny skies. There might even be some rain down in the village around Saturday.

Official snow depths:

Utopia: 240cm

Chuo: 185cm

Paradise: 225cm

Uwanodai: 135cm

All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Zao Onsen. The 'new snowfall' number represents the amount of snow measured since the previous report. All opinions are those of the individual reporters. Information regarding ski area operations is manually checked every morning and is believed to be correct at the time of the report.
