Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 17cm
Snowfall at base this seas 1156cm

Posted on Monday 24th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.

Yesterday we got to enjoy some spells when clouds parted and we saw some blue sky and sunshine, but the snow clouds soon get back to doing their thing and giving us more fresh.

As a result, another 17cm to report since yesterday morning.

Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 15cm fresh overnight. Talking about that ski area, a friend of mine headed out to Maiko yesterday morning (before 10am) and was turned away... the car parks were completely full.

Other popular ski areas were very busy too, as you might expect on the middle day of the long weekend. Today might still be busy (national holiday) but probably less so, particularly in the afternoon.

Right now there are a lot of very tired people around. Some need to get up early to shovel themselves out of their homes in a morning, only to help out (or it be part of their work) with similar duties during the daytime... and then do some more when they get home. Everything takes more time. It has been pretty relentless this month and in such times it is not the easiest day-to-day routine. Lift closures, busy lines and the like can be annoying for visitors, but the people working for the ski areas are doing their best to cope. (Ski areas don't close lifts on busy national holidays for fun. They want them open). Please try to give them a smile, it might help them through the day! :)

Oh yes, it is still snowing (lightly) this morning.

But after all these days of continued snowfall, it really is going to stop sometime soon - either later today or overnight. From then, we can expect at least a handful of days featuring quite a lot of sunshine and milder conditions. (If the forecasts are right, of course).
