Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 51cm
Snowfall at base this seas 1006cm

Posted on Wednesday 19th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.

The snowfall is getting crazy once again. And it's still set to continue for at least another several days.

Last night (7pm) 29cm of snowfall - most coming later in the afternoon/evening - was cleared away, and there's another 22cm there this morning. So that's 51cm for the 24 hours.

Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 40-60cm of fresh snowfall since yesterday.

All of Kagura is closed today due to the weather conditions. (They are reporting 2m of snowfall at the Tashiro Ropeway station over the last few days!)

Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway and the top section of that ski area is also closed for the day and the Southern Area of GALA will be closed.

When will the snow stop?

Looking at all the available forecasts, it looks like it might be early next week before the snow stops and we get some clearer skies. Before then we will probably get further periods of heavy snow, with it perhaps easing off somewhat at other times.

Over 10m of observed snowfall now. That is almost double the snowfall we got the during the entire 2023-2024 season.

To think, back in January, longer term forecasts were (I'm pretty sure) saying that February would probably be warmer than usual with less snow than average.
