Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata
New snowfall at base 9cm
Snowfall at base this seas 649cm
Posted on Wednesday 13th March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.
Cloud to rain to snow yesterday, and it was actually snowing quite heavily at some points last night. The result is about 10cm around town this morning, a bit wet.
There is probably more than that higher up and, indeed, Maiko Snow Resort is this morning reporting 10-20cm of snow. (If only more ski areas told us about these things. Sorry, broken record!)
Strong winds are forecast today and because of that the Tashiro Area of Kagura is definitely closed for the day, and it looks like the Kagura Area might also be closed. The Mitsumata Area is planning on opening. Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway is also closed for the day but the lower area of Yuzawa Kogen ski area is open.
All other ski areas appear to be opening as planned (though if it does get windy there may be some disruptions).
Sun and milder conditions are expected tomorrow and Friday, and maybe over the weekend too.
Beyond that, there is more snow on the forecasts for next week, so it seems we're not done with the fresh snow yet!
----------------------------
I believe quite a few of the official snow depth numbers at the moment are the highest they have been all season (though worth noting they are still noticeably lower than usual highs). That's got to be pretty unique for March. (We can all check the data on the Snow data pages within the listings for each ski area. For example, here's the one for GALA Yuzawa).
It sure has been a strange one!
