Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano

New snowfall at base 60cm
Snowfall at base this season 738cm

Posted on Thursday 21st March 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here.

Hello from Shiga Kogen.

As my Myoko colleague said this morning... the madness of 2024 continues.

Another very large delivery of fresh snowfall has blessed our mountains. Here's what ski areas are reporting:

Kumanoyu: 60cm! (as of 7am)

Yakebitaiyama: 55cm (as of 2:30am!!)

My friend (who sometimes gets carried away): nearly 1m

Crazy stuff. It almost feels unreal.

Wind is an issue still this morning and affecting some lifts. It is also affecting snow measurements, but I think that 60cm is representative for this report (though I note that it is perhaps still a bit on the conservative side). Basically: a lot.

This is easily the most snow I have ever been able to record/report for the month of March. And remember, this is coming after very low snowfall during February 2024, when it looked like the season was going to be cut short.

Tomorrow should be calmer.

All this is making for a very complicated and unique season, and Shiga Kogen doesn't seem to be alone in that respect.

Some monkeys from Jigokudani down in the valley this morning (photo below). They seem to be chilling out in the hot water. And why not.
