Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 17cm
Snowfall at base this season 687cm

Posted on Saturday 15th January 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

The snowfall slowed down during the day yesterday, but never actually stopped. Today we've got a touch of sunlight, but the snow is still falling lightly.

That big blast of snow yesterday was not particularly light and fluffy (ask anyone here who had to dig out their car). I think it was the first time ever that NHK's weather guy explained, and warned about, slab avalanches, and that big cohesive layer, on top of a hard, icy layer below, could in fact result in that dangerous type of avalanche. Things should be settling down now, so going into the backcountry will be a better choice than right after the snowfall (but it's still going to be a heavy fight to climb, and the slide risk is definitely still out there).
