Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano

New snowfall at base 4cm
Snowfall at base this season 125cm

Posted on Monday 1st January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here.

Good morning from Hakuba and a very happy new year to everyone. May it be a good one for us all.

The 'technical issues', ahem, this morning were solved with a few glasses of water, coffee and an aspirin. (Phew!)

Anyway, last year ended with some yucky rain that was, of course, not friendly to our lovely snow.

Happily, we got some fresh snow overnight. And while it is not a huge amount around base areas, Hakuba 47 is reporting up to 20cm in upper areas. But Hakuba Cortina wins the 'most snow' prize this morning - they are reporting an impressive 40cm of fresh! That sounds great. :)

Visibility seems generally limited on the mountains this morning, but better lower down with blue sky in places. So it's a bit of complicated early morning weather snapshot.

Ski area operations also remains quite complicated. It's impossible to comment on everything, but I note the top lifts at Happo-one are on hold at the start of the day and the runs down to the Nakiyama and Kokusai base areas have become unavailable.

It's nothing that a large amount of mountain-wide snow storm can't fix. But when will we get that? I wish I knew.
