This is probably a stupid question. I have been around when it is less than zero in the village and obviously also at the summit. It is snowing in both locations, but much more snow fall up the top. why is this so?

Due to the attraction clouds have for mountain summits, and the rising, cooler air precipiting its cargo, the snow at the summit will normally start sooner, end later, and snow harder. Relief snowfall will mean that some valleys in the right place will get as much as the tops, possibly sometimes more, accumulation will be greater as it's probably sheltered.

Let's not forget that at village level, pollution, sallt on roads, etc. etc. also reduces total build up of snow.
