An avalanche has buried four ski patrol officers in western Japan.

The four men are patrol staff at a ski resort and were checking a slope after reports of a snow slide.

A government official says they were swept away and buried by an avalanche while on Mount Daisen in the western Japanese prefecture of Tottori.

Sad news.

More info:

Oku-Daisen Ski resort.

Four courses, two lifts.

Mt. Daisen 1729m

location south side. Snowdepth reported 60cm at that time

News say it happened at Meradani couse 15~20 degrees slope angle, narrow gully .

There is a steeper 30 degree course called Kabe.

Both Meradani and Kabe runs from the top no.2 lift (higher)and joins together at the end of the course, which is at the top of no.1 lift (base) and continues to the base.

Confirmed dead.

one temp worker for the town, one ski instructor, two volunteers

It doesn´t say anymore than that, but the scary thing is it happened at a resort on piste. And where it slid is 15~20 degrees. (not steep but a natural funnel)

Very sad news indeed.

The fact that it was inbound on a shallow slope is a timely reminder that there is always a degree of risk in what we love doing.
