No you don't need to at all.

 

But if you do, there are no worries about your privacy. Basically we only know your email address if we need to go searching for it in order to scold you or suchlike! It is kept completely safe and confidential.

 

Just think it helps others if you are registered. And it looks better.

 

But there you go - to answer you - no you don't need to and the only way it "helps" us at all is the way that we can tell people we have "X" number of registered users.
