Looks like it was windy this morning but then up and running. Contemplating a mad dash up to Asahikawa but common sense is telling me that -12 white out conditions are not the best introduction to a mountain I have never hiked/skied before for first turns of the season. And yet...

Niseko was utterly awesome this weekend. Not much more that can be said really.

It really cracks me up, this whole "cultural ski trip" thing. What a load of nonsense. If you want to get a feel for Japanese culture take an extra week and spend some time in Kyoto or in Takayama or some of the other more out of the way places that still retain a lot of pre-Meiji history. Go there, see it and enjoy yourself and then head to the snow and be glad that at some resorts you can actually get a decent meal and stay in a decent hotel that doesn't close down at 9pm. Alternatively, spend some time in Tokyo after your trip, check out Ginza and Omote Sando and Harajuku and Shibuya and places like that to see 21st cent Japan and then visit Hiroshima, Nikko and the Yasukuni shrine and the Japanese war museum - this will give your a sense of how the Japanese see themselves and where they come from. Check out Matsumoto castle or the Himeji castle - I'm pretty sure these are a couple of the few remaining originals most are post war repos.

Grid system cities have been around in Japan for well over a thousand years, let's not just go making up our own convenient histories (although I do largely agree with what GN says otherwise).

fixed it up because work really is that boring today.

My error then if that's the case. Anyway I don't think we're likely to hear from him. -
I know a guy who skis them now (this weekend in fact) but his IP is banned so I don't think you'll be hearing from him. Anyway he has a ski for every occasion and these seem to be getting a lot of use on piste but will clearly go elsewhere from just looking at them.

Definitely the number one content provider at SJ, great info. What do you think the peak run would be like mid-season? Looks like just the right gradient to get a bit slidey...

I am not sure about Hellbents and I don't think you're likely to find many people around here with technical knowledge that is super detailed. For what it's worth K2 skis are meant to ski longer than they quote, as you mention. Also from your other thread I would heartily reccoment gotamas as an everyday ski (it's what I have) although if you will mainly be skiing in an area prone to iciness you might want to reconsider. Gotamas generally ski shorter than the quoted size, so the opposite to K2 stuff. Maybe the Barking Bear might have some people who could help you with these questions?

Very nice to see. I (probably) won't be in Niseko until the end of December but can't wait to get my own first turns within the next few weeks.

Hardly havin' a laff is it now?
Revenge of the yen earners! Suddenly a trip to RMR and Kicking Horse doesn't seem so crazy... -
carry trade carry trade carry trade. Other factors exist for sure but are pretty insignificant compared to the unwind tide.

It's a good year to be a local!
Instructor you are of course correct but when people are looking at 30% swings then shaving a few bps off spreads here and there is only really scratching the surface.

Thinking of getting away for three days or so this weekend. Niijima or Amami Oshima? What do you think?
-
Thnaks fellas. Yes, I don't think reef-grate would be a particularly good look to bring back to Tokyo so for the time being I'll be playing it conservative I think... will definitely go and watch the decent guys showing how it's done though.

OK then might just see what I can find borad-wise when I get there. I guess I'll have to rent a car and take on the roads if I want to get around easily with a board? Or will taxis take boards at a reasonable rate?
-
I can't see the pictures at work but Shikinejima is awesome. Enjoying a couple of beers in the onsen while looking out over the sea was probably my best onsen experience ever.

Gentlemen... I am off to Bali on the 29th for a few days. Wondering whether to take my own board or avoid the hassle and rent/buy something when I get there. As you've guessed if you've read any of my posts in this thread I am just a flailer and not a performance surfer or anything. I actually really like my funboard (7'10" I think) but also happy to try anything else and try new boards that you can use in Bali swell but not in the Japan "waves". Any thoughts from the old hands? Anything else a guy should know before heading out to Bali for the first time?

Yes, I do like very much!

Yes we met several times. We drove back together in your car as well, and maybe even with MeJane as well if memory serves...

I think I'm going to have a lesson next time from CHP nori san.
Hello there, I saw a girl with Rob but I don't think it was you, must have been one of the others. I was the only guy in the water in shorts and a rash guard, everyone kept on asking me if I was cold but it was lovely and warm! I go down there quite a lot with Tsondaboy so we should say hello next time!
