There seems a limited area for safe skiing (Peak to Chair). Sidecountry would be limited by cliffs. Apparently same under the ropeway to base. Was fully exposed to high winds on my only visit. Asahidake may be better?

to walk back the 50 meters to the piste (uphill through waist deep snow - a good thirty minute extreme workout)
When skiing in the nearpiste trees, you need to be aware of not crossing the fall line, or skiing into a creek or hole, otherwise the above will apply. Spot your line, and an exit point back to the piste.

wait until Australia Day!

back to ATM & Cards.
Aus can use the "totally fee free Citibank Plus Visa Debit Card" with current exchange rate of 93.4 for ATM cash withdrawals.
(note: but some local ATM owners may charge small access fee - Japan Post doesn't)

probably not suitable, but checkout the Sir Francis Bacon's anyway (and an awesome name).
-
go a bit wider, see some reviews on the Volkl Kendo for example.

Hochfugen (Austria-Zillertal) impressed me - and nobody skied offpiste (which it is known for).

Next Sunday (18th) should deliver some, & then looking good for the Monday at Perisher, after the weekend crowds depart.

We didn't like Furano (inbounds). It seemed a good resort for piste skiers.
Rusutsu & Kiroro are better choices with more options for inbounds snowboarding.

& parity with A$.
No wonder there's over 8million Aus international travellers annually from total pop = 22m (obviously some repeat offenders like Mama) .

and been dumping in the Carngorms too apparently:
"Snowing and drifting at the top. There is going to be amazing snowsports on the front part of the mountain today with a lot of pisted powder on most of the runs. Some areas at the Top are very hard packed."
Time to hit up the M6?

Mt Granview represents a buyers dream
Mama, I thought you'd be chasing the miners; Parabudoo or Yundamindera maybe?

I noticed one very fat K2 powder ski in the ski valet at the Hilton.
I was told someone had to get rescued out of one of the back bowls at a cost of about $4,000.
Unhurt, but buried & lost the other ski.
Someone might find it in spring.

With you on Rusutsu, but must say for us, Furano's not high on our list of favourites. We don't have the local knowledge for offpiste/OOB & along with the ski patrols attitude meant no offpiste for us on our only visit.

There's an earlier bus from Otaru at 08:10am but you would need to taxi from Annupuri to JR Niseko Town for the 06:43. Arrives Otaru 08:01

Are most helmet avoiders skiers?
-
To get to Kiroro (the direct bus service from Niseko ceased on 31 January):
Niseko Bus - Northern Resort 8:26am to JR Kutchan (9:25)
JR Kutchan 9:42 to Otaru 11:00
Chuo Bus from bus stop 6 at JR Otaru 11:30 - Kiroro Resort (about 45mins).
All fares around Y1,000 each.
Had a couple of powder days at uncrowded Kiroro this week.

I've been using a $100 GP copy on a telescopic pole. Agree that 90% gets deleted.
My worry is the potential impact on a small number of offpiste boarders (or skiers) flat-lining down through the trees at warp speed on a powder day, in order to get a "good" YouTube video (going too fast for the conditions or their ability & hitting a tree).

Narita airport on arrival is a good place to practice ATM use.

Bring your boots and rent some Fat skis, under $150 for 3 days (and you can swap them daily).

Mike, how's the crowd at the moment ( Mirharashi & Strawberries)?
Great photos as always.

Rusutsu has a "wave" pool too, with waterslide and also has the beginner adult ski lessons in English (Group or Private lesson).
