Jeans will be fine. Warm socks and a cosy jacket will do the trick.

It won't matter how careful you are, regardless of how the boots feel at the shop, riding in them will always bring out the gremlins.

My wife, though, leaves the room when I eat it.

I like it.
There, that's one vote "for".

I might try that heel insert thing... not sure about the loss of feeling though, that can't be a good thing.

We will always need banks... reliable, responsible banks who won't squander our life savings on high-risk investments and unsecured loans.

I think of losing my big toenails as part of my Winter ritual. I wear it like a badge of honour. They haven't fully grown back from the last Oz season, though.

No-one's recession proof. If your the only one left with income and assets after everyone else goes to the wall, who's house do you think they'll burgle first?

The cost of flash memory is falling like a brick, so maybe prices will be comparable in a couple of years' time. Size is an issue too, you won't find many SSD laptops with 160G drives. 48G is the biggest I've seen.

Panhead Pete has unwittingly prompted me to revive this thread. Fair to say that times aren't getting any easier for anyone, and now it's not just the exchange rate that's the problem. Anyone else having to rethink thier holidays?

Hagel BE et al. Effectiveness of helmets in skiers and snowboarders: case-control and case crossover study. BMJ. 2005 Feb 12;330(7487):345.
Macnab AJ et al. Effect of helmet wear on the incidence of head/face and cervical spine injuries in young skiers and snowboarders. Inj Prev. 2002 Dec;8(4):324-7.
Sulheim S et al. Helmet use and risk of head injuries in alpine skiers and snowboarders. JAMA. 295(8):919-24, 2006 Feb 22
These 3 studies, published in peer-reviewed medical journals, all showed a significant reduction (29-60%, depending on study, and definitions) in head injuries by helmet wear in snowboarding and skiing, without any increase noted in neck injuries. No study has, or can, show a reduction in fatalities, as the incidence is extremely low, and most fatalities are not primarily due to head injuries.
Sorry for introducing researched evidence to what has been a thoroughly enjoyable debate.
For my part, even though the risk of serious injury or death while skiing is very low, and mandatory helmet use is unwarranted, I will keep wearing one.

That sucks big time, more than any of us can probably imagine. I'll be sure to toast a sake (or two) to you, put in a few turns as well, and keep my fingers crossed for your job search.

I don't care which ski goes on which boot, my technique is so sloppy it can't possibly make any difference.

Yet that is exactly what is happening. Every week, it seems some thing or another is banned, or made compulsory in the name of safety. One school in Queensland recently banned kids from doing cartwheels on school grounds. I kid you not. -
He will be a long time living that down...

Having seen a kid die in the park at Steamboat in front of me where a helmet wouldnt have helped but then personally been knocked out twice now - in a helmet, I rarely ride without one. Tragic news for the family and friends of the person involved above
Many safety measures, seatbelts and motorcycle helmets for example, are compulsory in many countries, but none will guarantee safety in all circumstances. It would be an easier thing to enforce than the examples I've given, too. No helmet, no get on lift. -

I did, had a biggish collection, for play in the car mainly. Only ever bought a few vinyl albums. Went early into CD's and recently tossed out all my cassettes, mainly because I never listen to them anymore. Download a few tracks from iTunes if I can't be bothered buying the whole album. -
I got dissed in another thread for comparing the current situation to what happened after the '29 stock market crash. Every day brings us closer...

Would never happen in Japan...

And the quote I got was in Yen. Forget what it cost then (two years ago), but I bet it's more now...

I use that one. Not bad for point-point road navigation, and detailed enough for topo on the snow.

Not trying to scare you, just making the point. I haven't had mine done, and no plans in the near future.

Lasts a lifetime? Lasik hasn't been around long enough for anyone to make that bold claim.

Yes you can, the prescription lenses are fixed behind the goggles lens, I think. Never looked into it myself, so I'm not sure where you'd start. Ask his ophthalmologist.
Enjoy the snow, get some turns for me.......

If I'd just been laid off work, I'd be neck-deep in seek.com.au rather than snowjapan.com, as lovely and friendly a place as it is...
