  1. I imagine that it would (and perhaps should) be hard for some people to admit it even to themselves. My Dad always told me that he loved me more because I was the firstborn but that I should never tell my sisters. I respected him less because of it, feeling that either he was lying and secretly saying similar things to each of us or that he was telling the truth but should not feel like that, much less admit it.

I think my mum loves us all equally, but I know, as Mamabear says, that she likes different ones of us at different times depending on how we are behaving!

  2. A lot of the info you are asking for in on this site but not in the forums. Check out the tabs across the top of the page (navigates away from the forums). .

Recommending resorts, and snowfall stats - click on the resorts tab at the top of the page. Search these forums as to which are best for backcountry, least crowded etc

There has been some stuff on the forums about accomodation but it might be more difficult to find. Basically - it's not financially viable to rent an apartment short-term in Japan as the start up costs are equivalent to several months rent. Your best bet would be to rent a room in a hostel type place, lots of then are pretty nice and I've had no problem staying with my under 2 year old. You'll probably also have lots of other lodgers (babysitters) cooing over how cute he is so you will even be able to take a shower in peace! Check out the places to stay tab at the top of the page and look under hostel/lodge/backpackers.

Non-Japanese speaking will limit your options but keep your serach open. There are loads of resorts outside "the North". Think about contacting hostels and places too to see if they are hiring. There are quite a few run by ex-pats so language might be less of a problem.

No idea about snow salaries. Some others will be able to help you out there.

The auto-backup's bundled with the virus software in Norton 360. You just set which drives/folders you want backed up and to where and specify the time of day. It's pretty easy - just gotta remember to leave the pc on and close all the other programs.
I use logmein.com to sync my home and work pcs.
  4. Everything on external HD at work, backs up automatically every night and I syncronise the D-drives of my work and home pc's about once or twice a week. Wouldn't be much use in case of a "natural disaster" as home and work are about 5 mins apart but my photos are all online at smugmug so somewhere outside Japan. Back up photos to DVD once a year.

  5. Tsonda,

I guess your friends have docomo FOMA. Docomo MOVA is better for coverage. Docomo used to be gov. owned so they set up the antenna whereever they wanted whereas the private companies need permission, which is difficult to get for remote places (or so I heard).

FOMA is the newer, cheaper (now standard) system but it is possible to switch over to MOVA when you head into the mountains (but they you can't use email or i-mode so its a bit of a pain). When docomo finally gets rid of MOVA, they will switch all their antenna to FOMA and then their coverage will be great.

  6. Under two years old. Sitting at the top of the stairs crying and then being held by my mum as she carried me saying, "It's alright Jayne, you've just had an electic shock. Let's go downstairs and have some Jelly Babies". Then I remember her opening the cupboard in the kitchen to get the Jelly Babies but I don't remember eating them.

I don't remember the actual shock but aparently I touched some live wires that my parents didn't think were connected. My mum said I was quite a bit under two but I remember that moment and my mum's exact words really clearly. My dad connected the live wires into a power point (240v in the UK).

I have quite a few memories from nursery school (aged 2 1/4 to 4) but I think that one is the earliest.
