KUMA SHUTSU BOTSU--Beware of the Haunt of the Ezo Brown Bear
You see these as stickers and such all over the resorts in Hokkaido. For good reason: from time 2 time, they DO come down 2 towns and they do attack people (whether provoked or otherwise), and then the poor things are shot. This design makes 4 cool stickers though.

A kegger party would be great
Hakuba will be especially beautiful at that time of year golfgirl
Nothing like drinking after a day of snowboarding!
-
also try Stowe, the "ski capital of the east," website says they're a 7 hr. drive away from NYC.never been 2 this resort, but east coast skiing is a bit icier than colorado or west coast skiing. enjoy
-
hope U R all enjoying the chat!
-
thanks montoya
but my office's firewall has put a stop to opera doh!
-

-
would've liked 2 join the chat, but the java says i have a "bad magic number" does that mean i am funky like george clinton or bootys collins?

i missed it due 2 a nomikai... one project X episode that was truly amazing, even with the super melodrama, was about the construction of the Kurobe Dam...killer views of the area (aired 6/2001).
toque how is the access in late winter/early spring?
55-60 degrees? i heard that after 57 or 58 degress, if U fall, U're can't 2 stand up again until you spill out on2 a slope that is less steep.
sounds like fun!
-
don't know about others who live here...but after two of my American CCs were not accepted at the JR Midori-guchi (where U buy JR Bullet train tickets), I had to use my Japanese CC and it was OK.
never had problems with my foreign CC anywhere else

r they saying the cause of the warmer winter than usual is el nino? i'd heard a few years ago that bears on a whole were decreasing b/c of less food&poor weather (el nino/abnormal weather)...hmm food 4 thought
there's a ramen shop in Asahikawa, Hokkaido that serves a 10,000 yen bowl of "special ramen" --U can have a bear claw in your ramen!! (for the broth, Ur not supposed 2 paw the hand meat) i passed.

1981--a slope down to the river bank we called "the McDonald Hill" cause it was across the street from McDonalds--Maywood, Illinois.
1982--Villa Oliva, 30 minutes outside of Chicago, which has a whopping 180 vertical FEET! I was hooked on skiing at age 4.
Nov. 2000--Furano, Hokkaido

ian--copyright in the U.S. as well as in Japan is very ambigious, so take what i'm about 2 say w/ a grain of salt...The Copyright Act of 1976 (effective 1978) was made 2 protect the authors of "original works". that means, as soon as you begin to write a novel, paint a picture, write a song,....it belongs 2 U and U only. when large record companies, 4 example, agree 2 release Ur album, part (most) of the music then belongs 2 the company.
copyright makes it illegal 2 produce mass copies without written permission. if someone can prove U copied 5000 CDs on2 5000 CD-RWs, U R violating copyright. the ambigous part is that if U make 2 copies 2 give 2 Ur friends/family, U've technically done nothing illegal.
remember blank tapes? back then, no one cared if U made a mix tape and gave it 2 Ur friend. but now with the Internet, bands like Metallica sue software like Napstre and say the file sharing is illegal...and they win. all sounds pretty dumb 2 me. yeah, a small portion of the masses make copies available on the Internet, but there's becoming a thinner/finer line of who to prosecute--the Internet? Ur ISP? U? hope that cleared up more than it confused.
the Internet has put the means of production in2 the hands of the people!

yes, it's unfortunate.i just saw it on the 24-hour cable news channel "newsbird". apparently a 24-year old (japanese) at the Iwate resort in Matsuo-mura died 3.5 hours after the avalanche/ or 3.5 hours after being found....couldn't get the japanese. his friend survived, but it is tragic that there are fatalities like these,
seems like more than usual this early in the season???. the news report didn't mention if the pair had been out with the proper BC equipment or not.
casualties in the BC affect our sport and they touch me personally. let me say, i'm not 5ing 2 name any usernames, but let me just say if people on this forum (one in particular) don't wanna hear a bunch of compasionate people saying sympathetic words about someone they've never met, then DON'T READ THESE FORUMS! i think everyone knows what i'm saying. 'nuff said
ski and board safely!!!
-
yeah, it's a warm 4 degrees here in tokyo...any snow over here would prolly just melt in2 water B4 it hit the ground.
(powder line=the line a skier/snowboarder makes when turning in powder, not the other kind of powder lines U take in Ur nose)
would luv 2 B around some snow right now!!
-
doh! i've gotta invigilate a test this whole weekend. drop in some powder lines 4 me!!!

three seasons ago, in the spring, i saw a small brown bear about 20 meters away, in the trees near the run above the park at hakuba 47. i stopped and gawked @ the sight 'til i saw my friend come charging down through the trees.
when i caught up with her, she'd said a larger bear (prolly the mother of the one that i saw???) had popped out of nowhere right in front of her!!!
the japanese bears are all tiny compared to bears in colorado...KAWAII. but they could still rip your head off.
-
Telluride, Colorado is always a great place 2B. i'd also add Heavenly Resort @ Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada to the list and Jackson Hole, Wyoming is gaining popularity (always been a cool town)
-
this weekend in Ebisu... anyone ever been 2 one of these in tokyo? i've only been to ones in Osaka...
i'm looking 4 mostly accessories, could use a helmet and some cheap wax. i don't think i'd buy a board from these big sales (they have 'em from time 2 time in Japan), but with such cheap prices, u could prolly purchase stuff @ regular retail price, not inflated Japanese prices. enjoy it if 5!

only two this year--Nagano and Niigata.
have snowboarded in 6 prefectures B 4 this season--Hokkaido, Niigata, Nagano, Gifu, Fukui, and Hyogo. Hokkadio seems to have the best quality snow--would love to hear from peeps in Tohoku. how is it?
-
when i snowboard, my triceps get sore for some reason ??? maybe b/c of spinning in the park/off jumps. if i ever ski, i get sore in my thighs.
but after an onsen, TIGER BALM, the world's best medicine, makes it all better!
-
sure! i usually get out 2 the slopes on the weekends... but not this weekend (gotta work), but i'm game after that
-
excellent idea, montoya. very impressed, SJ!
now others may be able to use this as one more tool 2 ski safely.
take care, happy turns out there!
-
hi sunrise and slow, i live in tokyo and snowboard as much as possible on the weekends.
now that i've thoroughly hijacked this thread, i'll give it back 2 the osaka-jin and people in kansai (where i used 2 live--i luv minami!)

R U interested in the course or the clinic, Big S?
i'd be interested in the clinic ...went 2 kagura on a day trip sat. the 15th, looked like some sick, sick BC action over there!!! but i didn't go off piste though, 'cause it was my first time there, i didn't have any BC equipment, and there have been plenty of avalanche advisories lately..
have U taken avalanche awareness courses B4? i've got the "introduction to avalanche safety" certificate (Canadian Avalanche Association).
