  1. like others have said, start small and work Ur way up.

I've gotta go against what stepchild is saying: i do NOT recommend that you "don't try and jump too much, just cruise over at first." this is about the worst advice U can get, especially when U'r just starting out in the park or on jumps. FT has said this time and again, and he's right: you've got to ollie/pop when you hit the lip of the jump.

most tricks are made within the last three feet of the jump and the first three feet of air. this can be the scariest part of any jump b/c U have the most speed at this point and it's do or die. but it's also the most fun part, too!

BEND UR KNEES! BUK BUK BUK BUK! when U approach the jump, Bend Ur Knees! just as U go over the lip, POP/Ollie, then Bend Ur Knees again in the air to set up Ur landing. BUK--Bend Ur Knees.

most importantly, don't think too much, have fun!

  2. Crazy, i think FT is right--U need 2 get 2 out of the classroom and get out to Arlington Heights, which is where Raging Buffalo is. It's the closest ski "resort" to Chicago. They have a mid-western size halfpipe. Vila Oliva isn't that much further (Bartlett?).

U should also go to the Shred Shop 2000 block of W. Divison, if U know where that is...they used to have a skate ramp in the basement.wake boarding, skating, snowboarding, and skis. Friendly-family run business.

let us know how the california concrete snow is @ tahoe!

  3. hello alaska (???) 77. never met the original OSIG boys, but heard plenty about them. this is mostly hearsay, so, but: Hutch spent at least a 4th year as a private, Toby sold his bongo van and dropped out of Japan after 3 and now lives in Seattle, and as far as i know, Dean is still in Japan. Dean? search him on this site, he's written features B4. Heard crazy stories about these guys. AK, were U part of their crew that climbed and skied Mt. Fuji?

if you knew Arcton (posted in Hokkaido), he took over as OSIG pres after Hutch and Toby, Arcton's one really down-to-earth, cool guy. got married and went back to Canada after his 3rd. he and i have hit some sick sick sick powder lines in hokkaido. i was the humble editor of osig newsletter 00-01'.

anyway, welcome! japan is still powder heaven

  4. Bluebird at Happo 2day!! clap.gif clap.gif ate powder for breakfast and brunch skier's left of the top.

i must apologize to golfgirl 2. sorry, the pension didn't have Internet, so i didn't get Ur msg until it was 2 late when i got home. \:\(

highlights: seeing really young children (4/5-year olds?) getting snowboarding lessons was wild, hitting Happo's 1 (count 'em, 1) kicker again and again. went by myself, but hey, spring is around the corner, kids, ski em if U've got em!

  5. There R courier services right outside the Int'l terminal at Narita Airport, one is called ABC Courier:

    http://www.jalabc.com/service/index.html

    (Japanese only)

I think there R others, but I've only used this one B4. not sure about sunday pick up from a hotel to the airport, they might have 2 pick it up early sunday afternoon to get it to the airpot by monday afternoon (???)....

  6. absinthe. the liquorish-odored green drink that people like Von Gogh (pronounced go-ho in japan and go-hghgh in holland, btw) and Hem enjoyed. and you can get the real thing here in japan--one of 4 or 5 countries in the world u can drink the real stuff legally.

personal favorite way of drinking it is called a Hemingway--fill a glass 1/3 of Absinthe, dip a teaspooon of sugar in it, pull the spoon out (with the now wet sugar on it), light it on fire, let the sugar slowly drip down for several tens of seconds, lighting the Absinthe on fire as well, fill the rest of the glass with water, and you're in lal-lal land 1/2 an half later!

  7. went 2 maiko korakuen fri and sat w/ co-workers. took us more than 7 hours 2 get from shinjuku 2 yuzawa fri morning, and we had left @ 5:30! wonderful 3-day weekend traffic when everyone and there uncles come 2 the slopes.

was good company (no pun intended) and it was a good thing they R beginners b/c the park is right next 2 the green slopes @ maiko, and they kept putting up with me hitting the park every run. non-stop snow while i was there!!

made the drive back saturday nite after dinner and an onsen, left @ 10p and was back home @ 12:30. there weren't fifty-twelve billion people on the road then. excellent days 12 and 13 for me. another 7 or so and i'll be satisified. so will my wallet

  8. U'r right Indosnm, in a way, a slow, tweaked BS 180 on a floater can look so good--much better than a hucked 360 on a kicker, depending on how they're done. although, 3s are technicially more difficult than 180s, slow and stylish may sometimes B better than fast and sloppy. But if U bust a 360 (or more) and it's done smoothly...props!

i'm curious as 2 who can do the 540s listed on the poll. who R U? let's hear it!!

  9. yeah, an i think that's Y U C all the skiers and snowboarders assembling here.

now i'm just speaking 4 myself, but all of my stress, worries, frustrations, so-called anger, all of it, evaporates when i'm on the slopes.

    peace

  10. i've listed these in order of what i think R are easiest to most difficult. some peeps say a Backside 360 is equal in difficulty to a Switch Backside 180, but i ride switch just as much as goofy, so a B 360 seems harder 2 me.

PLEASE CHOOSE A TRICK U FEEL U CAN DO WELL. yeah, i can huck a 720 melon (on a powder day--with no one but my friends around 2 laugh at my landing), but it looks sloppy as $hit. In other words, what is your BEST trick?

wanna see who's steeping it up this year. PM me if U've got the urge.
