My local seattle based mtns have not even opened yet! (except Baker)
Ive got friends (beginners/low intermediates) there at the moment. They I hope wont know the difference ;\) I did however warn them that it can be sketchy at xmas and they should go later but "its cheaper" and "our friends always go then" ...

dont they know its about good snow ;\)
  2. I cant recall if the 75s had the chip. I only had em for a couple of hrs and I learned a lot that season experience wise (it was Red Mnt) so I'm no guru. It was a really kinda personal choice i think. I just found the monsters were stiffer than the M12s and I think I prefer a softer ski thats easy to turn. The day I demoed we had 20-25 of fresh and we were shall we say being pushed into some off piste beyond our comfort zone...Heaps of people swore by the monsters....im heading towards fat skis this season (as in 85-90 at the waist)

To give u an idea of my skiing level, I like bumps, find no challenges in Aus anymore, Skied double blacks at Red (but spook on steep) and havent had huge experience in powder (damn crap seasons for a decade). Total ski days are around 200 for me over 15 years. I like to turn. I dont do park or pipe (yet..sigh..its going to have to be done)...

The instructors pretty much all had Head skis cause they were cheep cheep (read free). iSL and skier cross were the two lots had. The skiercross i think was popular because it was a new model when they were ordering.

I ended up on the ic300s cause my skis were misbehaving (as in I could just drop the ski off my foot on my pilot 8s when stamping the tail down just standing still. yes...the bindings were all set correctly...the diagnosis was the springs were shot). I outgrew the pilot 8s.

I swapped with the instructors ic300s and bought them off him...he didnt like my pilot 8s ;\) It was the onpiste feel that got me in. I subsequently have learned they are less friendly off piste - no surpises there given the waist)

  3. I cant speak for this actual ski, but I have iC300s from the Head range and they are (were till i killed em ;\) excellent on piste. Off piste I couldnt tell too much difference between the im75s and M12 elans when i demoed. On piste they just latch the edge and wont let go...great for medium radius carves. In 170 i had no troubles in bumps.

A lot of instructors had skier cross heads or SLs and loved them...

  4. As per Nozawa Now! Does this mean Noz is in financial trouble?? or is this normal??? and will this affect how high you can get on the mountain?

It probably isnt going to affect me in Feb as long as the resort isnt in financial dire straights and half shuts or something stupid...

    Friday 15th October 2004, 8:40AM

Unlike Shigakogen we can't report the first snow of the season yet.

As mentioned in the last update some lifts will remain closed on weekdays this season. These are:

    Karazawa Chair Lift #2

    Nagasaka Quad

    Yunomine Chair Lift

    Yutopia and Challenger Chair Lifts

They won't operate on weekdays in January and March.

Hehehhe...Ive been around too long for that. 90kg may be 80 when Im done.

How about length. Ive had an ACL reconstruction 18 months ago and now am on 170s (176 or so tall). Id be looking to go short not long (less injury risk).

    Thx for the tips

Oh, we had 40 cm of fresh at Thredbo when we were there, heavy heavy heavy...I managed but my friends were toasted ... it had snowed and rained leading up to the dump.
  6. Im spending all of Feb 2005 in Noz and Niseko. Currently I have Head iC300s. I bought these from an instructor (iC160s were not enough for me).

109.5-64-93.5 iirc its the 64 that worries me.

I like the way these hold an edge on groomed. Not sure about powder (limited experience). Did try Head monsters and elans ?M12s.

The whole point of the Japan trip is to learn powder.

Skiing wise Im 90kg, on 170s and have skied a bit (200 skidays total, 15 years). Id go most places and either survive (unpretty) or be fine. Have been doing double blacks in Canada but got spooked after a fall on the steep. Nothing I could find (open) at Thredbo spooks me ;\)

I plan to be off piste mostly (groomed is boring, bumps, fresh, trees, some steeps are me)

    Should I

    a) take the ic300s and see how i go

    B) replace them before i go (prob v xpensive in Aus with a monster)

    c) pick up something in Tokyo on a weekend on the way to Noz

    d) buy in Noz

    e) rent for a month (?costs)

    ??

    All help greatly appreciated

    phool

  7. Damn Getaway for showing that Niseko expose at home...I bet there will be a rush now...and its the first time i go skiing in Japan....

My mates and I are planning next year. Im thinking a month in Niseko (we need to learn to ski powder..) or 2 weeks in Niseko and 2 weeks in Nozawa Onsen.

We dont do drops, dont go "out of bounds" but spend lots of time inbounds off piste (love the trees). 30 degrees and 30 cm of powder would be hard for most of us. 45 degrees and 15cm of fresh could be managed but we would be afraid. Moguls are good (unless bulletproof). We mostly ski Canada (Red is great, Fernie, Whistler, BigWhite Silverstar).

Are we going to get bored with a whole month in Niseko? We all want to ski powder confidently up to waist deep.

Most of us havent been to japan before (some pressure to do a little more than just ski - for me the Sapporo Ice festival and the brewery will do ;\) I have read lots and figure its going to cost $800aus or so to transfer Niseko-->Sapporo-->Tokyo-->Nozawa Onsen and be an overnight train.

Thats a lot of partying in Niseko if we dont move...(i think)

    We are thinking Feb...

Nozawa looks so pretty and offers more Japanese experience (the architecture and the onsen thing) but Niseko seems to impress more for sheer quantity of powder.

Whaddaya all think?? Can someone give me some perspective on Niseko by drawing some comparison to the canadian resorts i mentioned. Red was the most recent but I get the impression steeps wise its more like bigwhite. How big is the "village"...
