  1. The poor exchange rate will take a toll on tourist numbers this year, but I wouldn't be surprised if more foreigners are attracted to employment in Japan. Of course, you'd have to be saving the money to send home for this to be beneficial.

I've head over for the last five seasons, the most recent three times on backpacking routes. This year I just can't afford it, no matter how far I stretch the maths. I'm sure there will be others like myself on the budget end of the spectrum who can't afford that extra two thousand dollars :(. Had an amazing past few years though, and the yen can't stop me from reliving my favorite runs in my daydreams.

  2. Thanks guys. I was thinking red wine might not be the best choice. I'll have to get someone else to wrap it cause i can't wrap presents for the life of me! Food was my first idea but whatever I get has to sit in storage for about 75 days whilst I travel! Cheers

  3. Hey guys, I need a bit of help choosing a gift for an elderly Japanese couple I got to know last year. I was thinking a bottle of something as they loved their sake, would a nice Australian red be suitable? Or maybe a spirit perhaps? Just trying to get an idea of the Japanese palate and what's viewed as special gift. Also, should i wrap the gift and expect them to open it with me? They were very traditional. Cheers! \:\)

  4. The only time I can see you needing a rental car is when you're in Hakuba and want to visit various resorts there or go into town.

Otherwise, it might not be worth it. Getting to Noz and Hakuba from Nagano on the bus is cheap and easy!

I might add that if you're in Hakuba and it's cold it really sucks if you don't have your own transport. This year was ok cause it was almost sun-tanning weather, but the year before was so cold I hardly left my lodge (too poor to afford taxis). So it is definitely a bonus with the hire car, even just getting to the shops!

  5. I just had a burger king whopper meal an hour ago.. it's the most up and down meal. Sometimes it's absolutely awesome, other times it makes a night out drinking turn into hours of feeling ill. Tonight it was ok!

50 stores! No way, that's massive!

Go Mos Burger! The name alone is cool.

  6. Hey guys, I figured this topic would best fit in this forum.

I was wondering if anybody has been on the Shanghai to Osaka ferry? I'm probably going to do the 48 trip this season and want to know just rough the seas will be. Is Feb a time with lots of storms? I don't get sea sick but 48 hours is a long time...especially with 40 other people in the room.

    Cheers!

Haha that happened to me also! I liked the sulfuric taste. It scolded though. The actual onsen was so hot after 10 mins I couldn't close my fist and I started seeing starts. Got the hell out when that happened.

Some of those Noz onsens are HOT. I went to Nozawa the most tanned i've been in my life after 3 months in SEA, like black, and left a few skin-sheds later almost white again!

I was always a laughing stock cause my ass was fluoro white and the rest of my body was so dark. Good way to make conversation at least.
