This season we spent the afternoon skiing and boarding off piste under one of the lifts at the top of the resort. No one said anything.

The set up GN listed is really nice. Another Ski to consider may be the Volie Insanes or Drifters. Both are also light weight they are also a bit wider. Not sure how wide you want to go. Just be sure to get them with a flat deck and not with inserts which are designed for telemark bindings.

Otaru is worth a days visit. Trains from Sapporo run pretty frequently. Things there include some places that blow glass, places that make music boxes and a small canal district with good shops restaurants and bars.
Susukino in Sapporo plenty of night life

Actually our crew is not too far behind with 13 sets of skis more in storage, 7 bikes. I don't even want to think about the climbing and camping gear

Price is the most important factor.
I really hate places that charge by the person. Especially when rates for a family of 4 ends up at over $400 a night.

Signs at major resorts should be multilingual. Have you ever been to Geneva. Every jewelry store has signs we speak Japanese or Korean in them. To do business stores have had to adapt to the market place -
The Wilder Kaiser area is not too far from where you were at. Great area covers about 5 interconnected areas.

Rental gear takes a lot of use and abuse. It gets used everyday some people takes good care of what they rented others don't.
Considering the use equipment gets and the binding broke the rental shop should of taken care of it. Customer satisfaction is most important.

I would steer clear of normal irons with Teflon non stick bases. The ski edges has a way of peeling this stuff up and winding up in your wax. Not good. Normal irons with out the non stick stuff is fine.
