Am I right in thinking that an upgrade package is actually the whole new application (ie the same as the more expensive full version) - but it has some kind of codes or something that only let you install it on a machine with a previous version on (or whatever spec "required" for the upgrade)?

You really need a new machine there my friend. I can relate though, as I've had a few similar occasions myself over the last 5 years or so. Time for new!

This is not so much about actually using one as the market in general, but a very annoying thing to me is the way that they advance so quickly and as soon as you have the latest, another 6 months down the line and something new, faster and sexier is out there for the same price or less.

I'm not in Japan yet, but will be in a few months. I've never lived in a foreign country before, but interested in what it is like.
Do you go through a honeymoon period when everything seems great (or the opposite?!), or is it best when you can understand everything?
I'm sure it is the old case-by-case situation, but it'd be interesting to hear any thoughts.

I'm going to Japan in a couple of months - the place I am going to live will be to the east of Tokyo, somewhere near Chiba.
