They gave me small plastic calico bags and rechecked my baggage. When I got to Narita I had like 5 bags to collect of the carousel!
The key is never admit to having more than a snowboard/set of skis in the bag.

It also says-
International Piece System
When the combined weight of one kit and your checked baggage exceed the free baggage weight allowance, you will be charged at the rate of 3kg (7lb). Limit of one kit per person. The kit can be included as one piece in your free baggage allowance. If the one kit is in addition to the total free allowance, a special rate of 33% of the standard additional baggage rates will apply. Additional equipment is accepted at standard additional baggage rates.

Well that sounds like they boys at the over sized baggage thought the bag was over the bag KG limit. Over 32kg's per bag and they might crack the shiats especially at the person who checked it in.
I don't know what everyone with ski gear always gets worried about. Bottom line is as long as all your baggage is within the KG allowance you really shouldn't have a problem. (sometimes they don't even weigh the over sized bags )
My bag was a shade over limit at 21.5KG.
This is from the Qantas website.
"Snow Ski/Snowboard
One snow ski or snowboard kit consists of one pair of skis or one snowboard, one pair of stocks, and one pair of ski or snowboard boots. Snow skis and snowboards must be protected in a ski bag." -

were you travelling by yourself?
because if i pack two 'kits' into the one bag and check in the same time with my wife at the airport, do you think I will be ok?
Yeh I was travelling solo.
Best to ask Qantas on the phone mate.....Problem is the letter of the law has only been followed once with me out of at least 10 trips. Rest of the time it has not been a drama. You will in all likelyhood be fine but if you get an asshole on a bad day well who knows.

No Soubs...
I work in construction but the issue is pretty much the same across a lot of industries. -
The two step ladder thing is a funny one....
Here in OZ you can't use a three step ladder because you are not allowed to stand on the top or second from the top step of a ladder so effectively on a 900mm high ladder you are only able to use the first step, as the first step is useless for pretty much anything they completely banned the three step ladder from commercial sites.
Ladders higher than that can be used but the user must maintain three points of contact at all times....ie two feet and one hand so basically you are forced to work one handed if you are playing by the rules.
Safety elves get nuttier and nuttier every year.
Soon I understand that safety glasses, gloves, long sleeve shirts (year round) and long pants (again year round)will also be mandatory on commercial construction on top of the usual hardhats, ear muffs/plugs etc.
They love PPE while serious safety concerns like trip hazards, lack of edge protection and dangerous substances used incorrectly go unnoticed.

I once heard an interview of a guy on TripleJ that got his meat exclusively from roadkill!
I reckon he woulda downed a wombat or two.

Nice pic of feathertop if I am right?

Got back from Thredbo 2 weeks ago....man it was good for early season!
Bummer I dislocated my shoulder with some unbridled enthusiasm though.

Yes they are strict. They didn't catch me but I did develop a few 'tails'.
You need to know a decent circuit and then blitz it so you can always be one step ahead, if you lap you will get done for sure.

Damn,
You got me there GN!

BP,
I thought taxation might be the big difference....we do get taxed pretty heavily here in OZ.
Most of the time I was up in Hokkaido and I never really looked into rent etc, just the usual economic indicators like maccas and beer.

Sure we have nice lifestyles at a ski resort (and living costs are probably lower than in a major city) but man you guys are reaping it in compared to us...
From the time I have spent in Japan it hasn't struck me as being the cheapest place to live.....not outrageously expensive either but
surely on 7mil you wouldn't be living the high life and I could only think that on 3mil you would be doing it pretty rough????
I would have thought a PHD with 5 yrs exp 7 1\2 mil would be the minimum. -
Rusutsu is a very nice resort for intermediates.
-
You can get a K winter pass that from will let you access Rusutsu Resort, Sapporo Teine, Sahoro Resort and Nakayama Toge Ski Area.
Not a bad range of options if you are based in Sapporo!

Mine are either a weekend or a 4 week stint.

I think in bodybuilding they have a clean division but there is still some conjecture as to whether the 'clean' guys/gals are actually clean.

Also,
the visibility is almost always good, so on those stormy cloudy days you can ride fresh pow till your hearts content while on the groomers you cant see jack.
