  1. bastards yes, moronic indeed, but not a failing inherent to Communism. In fact a shift to more socialist values will be necessary to stem the relentless capitalist pressures on the environment. as long as we allow nature to be freely exploited these problems will arise. to stop the exploitation u need to employ socialist values. even the method of issuing tradeable quotas to allow the market to internalise the costs needs somewhere for that money to go. if it is to do any good, it should go either to the people, or thru the government into environmental schemes. neither are very capitalist.

  2. the time clock at work is 2 minutes fast.

this is causing me severe distress.

normally i arrive at work at _:57 or _:58 and look like a regular responsible worker.

but this clock anomaly has had me arriving on the dot 5 times in the last week and a half.

everyday i express my dismay at the clock trying to undermine my good record, and rip me off of half an hour's pay. but the staff must secretly enjoy watching me freak.

concurrently the battery sign has appeared on my watch. i have my suspicions that my watch is in on the conspiracy. i'm not sure if digital watches can run slow... but if they can, i'm sure it has all been planned. i just checked, and my watch is in fact 20 seconds behind the computer which is synchronised with an atomic clock in fukuoka. if thats not proof that something is going on, then i'm not sure what is.

there seems to be no easy way out of this quagmire.

  3. aahhh u must be talking about the cd's i gave to my exgf's little brother who was 9 years old. emm, they be a micky j cd, genesis, phil collins, something in a white case and a couple of others. about 7 or 8 in total.

at that time my collection was filling up with blur, charlatans, happy mondays, suede, primal scream - u get the idea - so i needed to get rid of all incrimating evidence of commercial fm radio.

most of the embarrassing stuff others have mentioned would make a pretty rockin 80s cd. thems not really embarrassing.

    grooovy kinda love.....thats embarrassing!

i wanna say i didn't have that cd...but the song was on was on phil collins live.

  4. I believe the timeframe for such a declaration is a little bogged down by the stategic importance of an ally in the middle east, and powerful lobby groups in influential nations.

a stern rebuke from some quarters even seems hard to come by, and it is this festering support which hampers other peace-making efforts.

  5. i reserve my hatred for society generally and what we have become. this way it is spread evenly amongst many people and never shows in too much of an extreme way.

these crooks some of u refer to steal small quantites (granted, sometimes with high impact on those from whom they take) but often get caught and do time.

corporate crims steal millions, and if caught, often get off lightly.

and worse again were the misdirected policies of the IMF, supported by the financial powers of western creditors, that impoverished needy countires.

hatred should be shared against the many, not targeted at the few.

  6. as a kid my house was broken into 4 times.

at the age of 11 i interrupted the criminals during the act.

our family's car was stolen 4 times, the last occassion being written off in high speed chase.

my car has been broken into and stolen a number of times.

last month my (reasonably expensive) bike was stolen.

from my experience and the crimes mentioned above...

by far the worst experience is the invasion of your private space during a home break-in. however, these events are most likely to be driven by social problems such as drug abuse or being raised in unstable environments. these are problems born of society, not merely the problems of the individuals that commit these crimes.

pinching cars (in oz) is generally the jobs of joy-riders. it is annoying. (i managed to catch the teenage theives of my gf's car -after they rammed my car - and they were from a rather well-to-do area)

my bike i suspect was stolen to be resold by a person who's job is stealing bikes. this pisses me off the most, yet ironically, was the most easy to accept.

    go figure?!??

  7. kintaro, i think u r missing plucky's point about the degradation of large areas of rainforest, and poor farmers turning to the more lucrative but unstable cash crop of coffee. and he may also be suggesting that starbucks is serving to popularise the coffee-drinking pasttime, and hence worsening the problem.

others may wish to compare this to the many problems associated with the world's increasing consumption for meat.

here is a plug for something of a compromise:

     Quote:
A few major coffee houses are now offering “ethical” coffee, triple-certified to be organic, grown in the shade, and fairly traded.

“Coffee, if grown right, can be one of the rare human industries that actually restore the Earth’s health,” according to Halweil. But in the last few decades, over 40 percent of the area devoted to growing coffee in Colombia, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean has been converted to full-sun cultivation. While this conversion allows farmers to grow more coffee per hectare, it destroys the rainforest and squanders many of the natural benefits of growing coffee in the shade. The initial economic gain is, at best, short-term.

Coffee grown under a rainforest canopy requires fewer pesticides, less chemical fertilizer, and almost no irrigation water, thus cutting down on farmers’ expenses. Farmers’ finances benefit in other ways as well. For example, on shade coffee farms in Peru, farmers derive nearly 30 percent of their income from sales of firewood, timber, fruits, medicinal plants, and other natural products grown in tandem with coffee beans. When shade farms are converted to full-sun use the diversity and number of organisms in the area crashes, says Halweil. The rainforests’ role in sequestering carbon and protecting freshwater resources is lost.

on the coffee at starbucks - i don't frequent the place. the coffee is drinkable at best... it is not good. drinkability, however, a quality of some value.

corporations taking over the world, well thats another issue...

the Fortune 500 came out today. its interesting to see how oil and vehicle manufactures represent 4 out of the 6 biggest companies in the world. the biggest being walmart.

corporatisation, it's a question of what u want, and who you want to control you.
