Conditions in parts of Niigata, especuially in that southern band from Myoko to Yuzawa, can be bad but I would say on the whole they are rather smooth apart from the big snow days.
Perhaps surprisingly so.
It doesn't get as cold as other places and the snow is often moved quickly and out of the way.

OK that makes me thing it might be somewhere in Chuetsu area of Niigata, close to the earthquake a number of years ago.

A local shop sold my lady friend some beer that was over 1 year past it's 'best by' date.
Luckily, I checked. Don't know why. But I will from now on.
They were very apologetic, though not enough - box of tissues and a refund didn't quite seem enough to me.

The 'holidays' (including weekend days) this year are
Saturday 27th April
Sunday 28th April
Monday 29th April
and
Friday 3rd May
Saturday 4th May
Sunday 5th May
Monday 6th May
So effectively two long weekends.

I am planning on sending a large amount of money from my bank account in the US, in my name, to my own bank in Japan.
These funds are 100% mine, savings from over the years, and so I have already paid income tax on them. They are not a gift or inheritance and not income.
Can I safely assume that I won't be slapped with any kind of tax on that?
The idea sounds pretty outrageous to me and it didn't even occur to me until someone (who usually talks rubbish a fair amount of the time!) mentioned something like that but got me worried.
